She died, dead on live.
The live streaming stopped abruptly, and the viewers on the other end of the screen were left in confusion.
Some thought it was just a pause in the broadcast, while others, sensing something was wrong, left comments in the live chat, "What's going on?" and "Is she okay?"
But no one could have predicted that the female broadcaster, who was still chatting and laughing just moments before, had tragically passed away.
It happened so suddenly.
The paramedics arrived as quickly as possible, but all their efforts to save her ended in vain.
The doctors announced her official time of death, and the news spread like wildfire.
In just a short span of time, the female broadcaster's death became the top trending topic in all major news outlets of Jingzhou City.
The deceased was a well-known internet celebrity of Jingzhou, with an enormous following across various social media platforms.
Her name was Jiang Xue.
While there were different speculations about her death online, the police had also received notice of the incident and sent officers to investigate.
I am Lin Hao, a police officer in Jingzhou, and my partner Feng He and I were among those investigating officers.
The Dark Side of Love
We sat in the dimly lit office, surrounded by stacks of files and flickering computer screens.
The female broadcaster's last live stream was playing on one of the monitors, which we had already watched for the third time.
Jiang Xue sat in front of the camera, wearing a pink sweater, her hair tied up in a ponytail.
She was responding to comments from her viewers about a recent shopping haul she had posted on her social media.
"Thank you, my dear fans, for your support. I'll make sure to post more often."
She smiled as she read through the comments.
The live stream continued for a while, with Jiang Xue chatting with her viewers and occasionally sipping from a cup of bubble tea beside her.
At the 47-minute mark, Jiang Xue reached out for the cup of bubble tea again.
But this time, her hand trembled slightly as she held it.
I paused the video and rewound it to the 46-minute mark.
The Dark Side of Love
We played it again from there.
Over the next five minutes, Jiang Xue's movements became increasingly unsteady.
She touched her throat twice and blinked rapidly.
Her speech also slurred almost imperceptibly.
The chat box was filled with messages from concerned viewers. "What's wrong with you?"
The Dark Side of Love
"Are you okay?"
"Jiang Xue, stop drinking!"
I dismissed the other officers, and Feng He and I continued to analyze the footage.
We sat at our desks, watching the video frame by frame.
The bubble tea caught my attention.
Jiang Xue usually took small, delicate sips for the camera, but today she gulped it desperately.
It was as if she was trying to wash away a bitter taste.
I focused on the moments when she set down the cup.
Using our department's video enhancement software, we could track the consistency of the liquid in the cup.
At first, it appeared normal, with the pearls floating evenly inside.
However, around the 30-minute mark, they started clumping together in an unusual way.
Jiang Xue tilted the cup toward the camera while showing off a bracelet she had bought.
The Dark Side of Love
I noticed an odd discoloration at the bottom of the cup.
I zoomed in closer and adjusted the contrast.
"Lin, do you see that residue at the bottom?" Feng He asked, squinting at the screen.
"Yeah, it's not just tea; something else is mixed in," I replied, feeling a chill run down my spine.
"We need to get a sample of whatever's left in that cup," Feng He said urgently, already reaching for his phone to call the lab team.
The Dark Side of Love
I gripped the steering wheel tightly, my knuckles turning white.
Feng He and I were racing through the evening traffic in our unmarked car, heading toward Jiang Xue's high-rise apartment.
The red lights seemed to stretch on forever, forcing us to stop every few minutes.
Each delay made me anxious that any evidence might be destroyed before we could get there.
Feng He called ahead to the building's security team, instructing them to seal off Jiang Xue's unit until we arrived.
I glanced in the rearview mirror, noticing a black SUV had been following us for the past three turns.
"Lin, check if that SUV has been behind us for long," Feng He said, noticing my gaze in the mirror.
I checked the license plate number against our system and replied, "It's registered to Wang Zhen."
"Wang Zhen? Isn't he Jiang Xue's boyfriend?"
Feng He asked, his brow furrowing in surprise.
The Dark Side of Love
"Yeah. It seems like he's trying to keep up with us," I replied, my grip on the wheel tightening further.
I pulled into a side street and stopped the car abruptly.
The SUV behind us also came to a halt, its headlights illuminating our car.
Feng He instinctively reached for his gun, but I gestured for him to wait.
The door of the SUV opened slowly, and Wang Zhen stepped out.
He held a small package wrapped in brown paper in his hand.
The Dark Side of Love
Wang Zhen's usual arrogant demeanor was nowhere to be seen, replaced by visible nervousness as he approached our car.
I rolled down the window, and Wang Zhen leaned in close.
"Officer Lin, I've been following you. I have something important to tell you," he said, his voice trembling slightly.
"Jiang Xue left this with me months ago. She told me that if anything happened to her, I should give it to the police."
