"Where are we going to stay in America, Aunt Petunia?"
I asked when the Dursleys left me at an airport in America.
"You're staying...here," Petunia said, not even glancing at me as she turned to leave with Vernon and Dudley.
Here?
On my own?
"Wait! You can't just leave me! Where am I going to sleep? What am I going to do?"
I called after them, panic creeping into my voice.
The Dursleys didn't respond, didn't even look back at me.
They got in their rental car and drove away, leaving me alone in the airport.
I stared after them for a few moments, then turned and walked back into the airport, looking for somewhere to sleep.
Maybe if I went to the police, they would help me?
Maybe the police could help me get in touch with someone in the wizarding world!
I looked around for a payphone, since I knew the Muggle number for the Ministry of Magic's hotline for kids in trouble.
But every payphone I found had been ripped out of the wall, or was broken.
And I didn't have any Muggle money to fix the phones, even if I knew how.

I shuffled through the airport, my worn sneakers squeaking against the polished floor.
The information desk loomed ahead, a beacon of hope in the middle of the bustling terminal.
A middle-aged woman in a blue uniform stood behind the desk, answering questions from travelers and directing them to their gates.
My stomach twisted with nerves as I approached the desk.
I rehearsed what I was going to say in my head, but I wasn't sure how to explain my situation.
Other travelers brushed past me, wheeling their suitcases and briefcases.
I had nothing with me but the clothes on my back.
The desk was higher than I was used to, and I had to stretch up on my tiptoes to talk to the woman behind it.

"Excuse me," I said, trying to keep my voice from shaking.
"I need some help. My aunt and uncle left me here on my own. I'm not sure what to do."
The woman frowned and leaned forward, her eyes softening.
"Okay, honey, can you tell me a little bit more about your situation?"
I took a deep breath and tried to explain, but the words got caught in my throat.
I didn't want to cry in front of this nice lady, but it was hard when I thought about how alone I was.
The lady listened to me for a few minutes, then made several phone calls while I waited.
I shifted back and forth on my feet, fidgeting with the frayed hem of my oversized shirt.
The lady finished her last phone call, then looked up at me with a sympathetic smile.
"Okay, honey, I've called the police for you. They should be here in just a few minutes."
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat.

"Thank you," I said quietly.
The lady's smile softened even more.
"You're welcome. Do you want to sit down over there while we wait?"
She gestured toward a row of chairs nearby.
I nodded again, then walked over to the chairs and sat down. The lady went back to helping other travelers while I waited for the police.
I stared blankly ahead at the wall as the minutes ticked by.
I didn't know how long it would take the police to get here, or what they would do with me once they arrived.
Maybe they could help me find someone from the wizarding world?
Maybe they would put me in foster care until I could get in touch with someone who could help me get back home?
A man in an expensive-looking suit approached the information desk as I sat there.
He was tall and lean, with dark hair and eyes that seemed to see everything around him at once.
He spoke quietly with the desk lady for a minute or two, then glanced over at me as she pointed in my direction.
His eyes softened when he saw me sitting there alone, and he walked toward me purposefully. "Hello," he said when he reached me.
His voice was deep and gentle.
"My name is Bruce Wayne. What's yours?"
I eyed him warily; I didn't know this man from Adam, and I wasn't supposed to talk to strangers.
But something about him seemed kind...
