My name is David, son of Paul.
I am a knight of the kingdom of Yaredes, which is ruled by King Morgan the First.
When I was nine years old, I lost my father to a goblin invasion on our southern border.
The kingdom was in a state of turmoil and fear for quite some time, as we had never been attacked by goblins before.
My father went to battle against them, but he never came back.
The blow was very hard on me and my family.
As I had no mother, I was brought to live in the palace.
The princess and I were almost the same age, and we grew up together.
She became like a sister to me, and as we grew older, my feelings for her became stronger and stronger.
I dared not tell her how I felt, but I was grateful just to see her every day and be close to her.
One day, I decided to tell her how I felt.
I could not take waiting anymore.
I was so nervous; I did not know what she would say.
Perhaps she would have me thrown in prison for daring to love her?
Perhaps she would have a different fate for me?
I did not care what would happen to me after I told her.
All I cared about was that she knew how I felt for her.
Perhaps she felt the same for me?
I watch Amanda in the palace garden from behind a marble column.
Her golden hair catches the late afternoon sun, and she is tending to her favorite roses.
My palms grow sweaty on the cool stone.
She's alone today; even Lady Elara has retired early.
Moving from my hiding spot, I cross the courtyard, my footsteps echoing on the stone path.
Amanda turns at the sound, and her face brightens with recognition.
I stop a few feet away, throat tight, hands trembling.
She waits patiently as I struggle to find words.
Finally, I take a step closer, drop to one knee, and reach for her hand.
I take her delicate hand in mine, my heart pounding so hard I fear it may burst.
The sweet scent of roses envelops us, and she gazes down at me with kind eyes.
I open my mouth to speak, but before I can utter a word, rapid footsteps sound across the courtyard.
A royal messenger rushes into the garden, red-faced and breathless.
He spots us and hurries toward us, waving a parchment sealed with the royal crest.
I release Amanda's hand and rise to my feet, frustration welling within me.
The messenger bows repeatedly, thrusting the document toward me.
"Sir David," he says, his voice trembling.
"A message from His Majesty. You are requested in the throne room."
I take the parchment and break the seal, reading the contents with growing disbelief.
The messenger watches me anxiously as I scan the document.
"What does it say?" he asks, his curiosity evident on his face.
I glance up at him, feeling a mix of emotions: confusion, disappointment, and a hint of hope.
"It appears," I begin, my voice steady despite the turmoil within me.
"I have an inheritance to claim. From an uncle I never knew existed."
The messenger's eyes widen in surprise.
"An uncle? But sir, you have no living relatives."
I nod solemnly.
"Apparently, there is one. My mother's uncle. He passed away recently, leaving behind a substantial fortune."
Amanda steps forward, concern etched on her face.
"David, what does this mean for you?" I look at her, my heart heavy with uncertainty.
"I'm not sure," I admit honestly.
"But it seems that my life is about to change in ways I could never have imagined."
The messenger clears his throat, interrupting our momentary connection.
"Sir David, if you'll excuse me, I must inform His Majesty of your knowledge. He awaits your presence in the throne room."
I nod reluctantly and follow him out of the garden, leaving Amanda behind.
As we walk through the palace corridors, my mind races with questions and doubts.
What does this inheritance mean for me?
Will it bring me closer to Amanda or further away?
And what secrets lie hidden in my family's past that could change everything?
