"Derek, I'm pregnant," my wife Michael told me over the phone.
I was getting ready to leave the country for my dance tour.
I was so happy to hear the news, but I didn't want to leave her side anymore.
"Baby, I'm so happy. I don't want to leave you now," I said.
She giggled.
"I know, but you have to. It's only for a few months. I'm going to be fine," she said.
"I wish I could just cancel the whole thing," I whined.
In 1996, my beautiful wife and I found out she was pregnant with our first baby when she was on her history tour with her brothers.
Two months after that, she was put on bed rest because of a false labor scare.
Then three months after that, she had a severe abdominal pain that stopped her concert midway.
She performed with her brothers as usual, but this time she had me by her side holding her hand through it all.
I was so worried about our unborn baby.
I knew I had to be strong for my wife Michael.
After the concert, we went straight to the hospital for her to get some rest and checkup on our baby.

I paced back and forth in the hospital room, while Michael was lying in the hospital bed with monitors on her stomach that tracked both her vitals and the baby's heartbeat.
The beeping noise from the monitors was driving me crazy.
Dr. Chastain was examining the ultrasound screen.
I couldn't tell what his expression meant.
David stood by the door making quiet phone calls to reschedule the rest of her tour dates.
The room seemed so small.
I replayed that night when she doubled over on stage in my mind over and over again.
The look on her face when she had to stop the concert in the middle because of the pain was haunting me.
It felt like we've been waiting forever for the test results to come back.
Michael reached out to grab my hand.

She could tell I was freaking out just by looking at my trembling hand.
I leaned in to look at the ultrasound screen.
It was a grainy black and white picture.
I squinted my eyes trying to figure out what I was looking at.
Dr. Chastain moved the wand across Michael's belly, and the sound of our baby's heartbeat filled the room.
It was so steady and strong.
It made me feel a little better.
Michael's grip on my hand loosened a bit.
Dr. Chastain pointed at something on the screen and said, "Look right there."
David walked over to take a look too.
I couldn't make out what it was.

It looked like a bunch of tiny bubbles.
Dr. Chastain moved the wand around some more, and then I could see it moving.
I could see our baby's tiny little heart beating rapidly inside of its chest cavity.
I felt a wave of relief wash over me as I watched our baby move around on the ultrasound screen.
