There was a legend in town that told the story of a mansion so sinister and evil that anyone who went in never came out alive.
It was said that if you looked in the window at night, you could see the ghosts of all those people dancing and eating in the huge dining room.
They would be wearing tuxedos and beautiful gowns, looking very much alive and happy, but then your car lights would flicker out and when you turned them back on, the people would all be gone.
The mansion sat on top of a hill outside of town, at the end of a mile-long driveway that was paved with cracked and broken asphalt.
The trees surrounding it had grown wild and tall, bending in toward the house as if they were trying to keep it a secret.
Everyone in town knew about the mansion and the legend, and they all stayed away.
At least most of us did.
I always thought that it was stupid to think that just because people went into a house, they never came out again.
The Cursed Mansion
I sat on the couch in my living room, watching as Mason fidgeted with his camera equipment.
Cameron and Evelyn were arguing about the risks of going into the mansion, but I knew that we were all going to do it.
Landon was sprawled out on my couch, tossing a flashlight between his hands and grinning at me with that mischievous look that I knew so well.
I spread out the local newspaper clippings I had gathered onto my coffee table.
They were all from the same time period, back when the mansion was still occupied by its owners, and they told a story of a family who lived in luxury and splendor.
But there were some inconsistencies in the stories.
Some said that the family died in a fire, while others said that they simply disappeared one day. "I think we should go in through the servant's entrance," I said, looking up at my friends.
"I saw it when we drove by today. It's around back and it looks like it hasn't been used in years."
Evelyn shook her head, clutching her crystal necklace tightly in her hand.
"I don't know if this is such a good idea," she said.
The Cursed Mansion
"But..."
She trailed off, her eyes flicking to Mason's camera as he clicked off a few shots of our planning session.
The sun was setting outside my windows, casting long shadows across my floor.
"Here's how we'll do it," I said.
"We'll all meet at the bottom of the hill at midnight. We'll drive separately so that no one knows we're together. We'll go in through the servant's entrance and then split up to search for clues." "Sounds like a plan," Landon said, tossing his flashlight into the air and catching it with a grin.
The Cursed Mansion
I pulled five identical black backpacks out of my closet and handed them around to each of us.
I had packed them all with supplies: flashlights, cameras, notebooks and pens, snacks and water bottles.
As the clock ticked towards midnight, we all knew there was no turning back.
I double-checked the contents of each backpack under my desk lamp.
Flashlights, water bottles, first aid supplies, walkie-talkies.
My hands paused on Landon's pack as I remembered how he had insisted on sitting next to me while we reviewed the mansion's layout on a map.
11:30 PM.
I zipped up my jacket and grabbed my car keys.
The Cursed Mansion
I sent a group text to confirm our meeting spot and then stood at my bedroom window, looking out at the dark shape of the mansion against the starless sky.
Its broken windows looked like hollow eyes staring down at our town.
My phone buzzed with responses - everyone was still in.
I walked out to my car, a beat-up old Honda Civic that had been passed down through my family.
I drove slowly out of town, the only car on the road at this hour.
I turned off my headlights when I reached the bottom of the hill and parked behind a row of overgrown hedges.
The others were already there, their cars lined up in front of mine.
Mason was fiddling with his camera equipment, Evelyn was hugging herself against the autumn chill, Cameron was checking his phone's signal, and Landon was pacing back and forth in front of his car.
We all gathered in a tight circle, our breath visible in the cold air.
I handed out the backpacks and demonstrated how to use the walkie-talkies.
Then we started up the winding path that led to the mansion, gravel crunching beneath our feet.
Landon fell into step beside me as we walked.
"Do you really think we'll find anything in there?" he asked, his voice low but tinged with excitement.
The Cursed Mansion
"I don't know," I admitted, glancing at the looming silhouette of the mansion.
"But if there's even a chance to uncover what happened to that family, it's worth it."
