In a town, not so far away, there is a legend about a mansion that has been there for as long as anyone can remember.
It is said that anyone who goes in never comes out.
The place has been untouched for as long as anyone can remember and has been the topic of many conversations.
People have tried to go in but were too afraid.
Three of my friends and I decided we would be the first and began our journey one night to see the place for ourselves.
We had all heard the stories but were skeptical.
We didn't believe that it was really cursed and decided that the only way that we would find out for sure was to go see for ourselves.
We didn't have any trouble finding the place.
It was just outside of town at the top of a hill.
When we got there, we were able to see it clearly in the light of the full moon.
The house itself looked normal and not ready for someone to take residence like the stories had said.
There were no overgrown plants or broken windows and doors.
There was nothing unusual about it at all.
The Cursed Mansion
We walked around the house, looking for any sign of something unusual.
The only thing that we noticed was that there were no footprints in the dirt around the house.
There were no signs of any animals having been there recently either.
It was as if the place had been completely untouched for a very long time.
We all agreed that it was very strange and decided to look around some more.
As we walked around the house, I noticed that my flashlight beam was shining on something metallic coming from a ground-floor window.
I pressed my face against the glass and cupped my hands around my eyes to get a better look.
It was an old brass key hanging from a nail just inside the glass.
I looked at the others and they all came over to see what I had found.
We all pressed our faces against the window and looked inside.
The Cursed Mansion
The room was a study or library of some sort with many books on shelves.
The room was dusty but looked like it had been left intact.
There was no sign of anything out of place or any damage to the room or its contents. Sarah tugged on my sleeve and motioned for me to look down at the ground.
I did and saw that there were fresh footprints in the dirt right beneath the window.
They were leading away from the house but stopped abruptly at the edge of the overgrown garden surrounding it.
The Cursed Mansion
We turned to each other, realizing we were not alone.
I pressed my face against the window again, looking at the key.
The others huddled around me.
The room was dimly lit but we could make out rows of leather-bound books with cracked spines.
The air inside looked stale and musty.
Suddenly, a floorboard creaked behind us.
We spun around to see an elderly man standing in the garden just beyond the overgrown bushes.
He was wearing a pair of dirt-stained overalls and a wide-brimmed hat that partially hid his weathered face.
He clutched gardening shears in his trembling hands.
Mark took a step back, stumbling into Sarah who let out a small yelp.
The old man's eyes locked onto mine before drifting to the key hanging inside the window.
The Cursed Mansion
He nodded slowly, then turned and vanished into the shadows without a word.
