When I got to the mermaid's place, she was teaching other mermaids and mermen how to drink water and bathe, as well as some other moves that I didn't understand because I hadn't started learning the moves yet.
"Come on up," she said, seeing me.
I climbed the rock and went straight to her.
"What did you come here for?"
she asked.
"I came to learn the skills," I said.
"Great! But first, you have to tell me why you don't like drinking water."
"Water is tasteless. I prefer drinking juice," I said.
"Tasteless?!" she yelled.
"Water is the best drink in the world. What is your favorite juice?"
"Orange," I said.
She smiled and went straight to where she kept some shells.
She brought two big shells and gave them to me.
"Do you know how to get water from this shell?"
she asked.
I shook my head.
"No."
"It's easy. Watch me," she said.
She put the shell's opening under the sea and waited until it filled up with water.
Then she gave it to me and told me to drink without spilling a single drop of water from the shell.
I drank all of it and felt refreshed.
"Now, let's get some more," she said.
We went to another place where we got some more water and drank again.
"This is delicious," I said.
"You see? You were just not drinking enough real water. Juice can't quench your thirst like water does," she said.
"I'll start drinking water from today," I said.
"Great! Now, let's go to the shallow pool where you can learn the first move," she said.
I followed her to a shallow pool where there were some mermaids twisting their bodies in the water.
"This is the first move. Watch me," she said, cupping water with her palms and gliding it smoothly through the water.
"Now, try it," she said.
I tried to copy what she did, but I stumbled and fell into the knee-deep water.
The other mermaids who were watching me couldn't help but laugh at me.
"Don't laugh at her," Rosetta said.
"She's just learning."
I tried again, but I couldn't do it.
Rosetta came to me and adjusted my arm position.
"You have to scoop the water with your palms and then direct it to flow smoothly through the water," she explained.
I tried again and again until I was able to make a small ripple that traveled a few feet before disappearing into the sea.
"Good job!" Rosetta said.
"Now, let's go on to the next move." She showed me how to twist my body in the water and then swim fast like a fish.
"Why do I need to learn these moves, Rosetta?" I asked, panting slightly from the effort.
"Because," she replied, her voice suddenly serious, "these aren't just moves—they're the key to unlocking the ocean's secrets."
"The ocean's secrets?" I echoed, feeling a thrill of curiosity mixed with apprehension.
"Come," Rosetta said, guiding me to a secluded cove where the water was crystal clear and reflected the afternoon sun like a mirror.
She gestured for me to follow her into the water, and I waded in until I was waist-deep.
"Watch closely," she said, moving her hand in a flowing motion through the water.
The movement created a spiral pattern that rippled outward from her fingertips.
"Now, you try," she instructed, nodding at me.
I mimicked her movement as best I could, but the water barely responded.
My hand moved awkwardly through the water, creating only small ripples that quickly dissipated.
Rosetta chuckled softly and adjusted my arm position.
"You have to let the water flow with you," she explained.
"Don't force it."
I tried again, focusing on keeping my movements smooth and fluid.
This time, the water responded more readily, forming small whirlpools that swirled around my fingers. "Good!" Rosetta encouraged.
"Now, let's try something a little more challenging."
She demonstrated another movement, this one involving a quick flick of her wrist that sent a jet of water shooting up into the air.
I watched intently and then attempted to replicate the motion.
At first, nothing happened except for a small splash of water that barely reached my knees.
Rosetta smiled patiently and adjusted my wrist position.
"Remember, it's all about control and finesse," she reminded me.
I tried again, focusing on using just the right amount of force and speed.
To my surprise, a small jet of water shot up into the air, landing with a splash in front of me.
"Yes!" Rosetta exclaimed, clapping her hands together in excitement.
"You're getting it!"
We continued practicing for several more minutes until I felt more confident in my ability to control the water.
Then Rosetta gestured for me to follow her into deeper waters. "Are you sure?"
I asked hesitantly, looking out at the vast expanse of ocean stretching before us. "Don't worry," she reassured me with a smile.
"I'll be right there with you."
Taking a deep breath, I waded forward into the deeper waters until I was swimming alongside Rosetta.
