Camilla
She is a sophomore at Springdale High School. She is introspective, romantic, and selfdoubting. Camilla often reflects on her past and her unrequited love for Jayden, who was her classmate and friend. She struggles with selfacceptance after a childhood incident of being called "fat" by her former best friend. Despite overtures from Jayden, she remains convinced that he only sees her as a friend. Years later,as an adult, she works alongside Jayden at a company in San Francisco, where they both struggle with elevator malfunctions and unresolved feelings.
Jayden
He is a senior at Springdale High School and later attends the same college as Camilla. He is charming, considerate, and conflicted. Jayden becomes Camilla's close friend after they both attend the same college following their high school days. He shows affection towards Camilla but hesitates to reveal his true feelings due to past relationships. Years later,he works at a company in San Francisco alongside Camilla, where they develop a friendly yet intimate relationship. He shares personal stories with her, hinting at unresolved feelings from their past.
Kellen
He is Mira's boyfriend and is also friends with Camilla and Jayden. He is confident, sarcastic, and competitive. Kellen has a complicated relationship with Mira, often displaying rivalry and competition in their interactions. Despite his rough exterior,he cares deeply for Mira and supports her publicly while struggling internally about his feelings towards Camilla.
I still remember the day I met Jayden like it was yesterday.
It was my first day at a new school.
I and my best friend Mira had just started attending Springdale High School.
We were both sophomores.
I was new in the area, having just moved in with my family a week ago.
I still didn't know much about the school, and I certainly didn't know any of the students.
As I walked down the hallway with Mira, trying to attempt to catch my breath after running up and down the stairs looking for my classroom, I collided into someone.
I was too engrossed in my thoughts to notice him walking toward me, and before I knew it, I had bumped into him and fallen to the ground.
My books and files were scattered everywhere on the floor.
I was too stunned to get up and apologize.
My face burns hot with embarrassment as I scramble to collect my papers from the floor.
"I'm so sorry," I stammer, not daring to look up at the person I crashed into.
A pair of hands enters my field of vision, gathering some of my scattered notebooks.
His fingers brush against mine as we both reach for the same chemistry textbook.
I finally force myself to look up and meet his eyes.
They're warm brown, crinkled slightly at the corners as he smiles.
He's a senior, I realize with mounting mortification, recognizing the varsity jacket he's wearing.
Mira stands frozen beside me, her mouth slightly open as she watches us.
He hands me my books with a gentle "No worries."
My face burning red, I clutch the textbooks tightly against my chest and mutter a quick "thanks."
I keep my gaze down, shuffling my books as he turns to leave.
But then he stops and turns back to me.
His hand reaches out, lifting my chin so that our eyes meet again.
"Hey, are you okay?"
His voice is low and soothing, and for a moment, the rest of the world fades away.
I nod mutely, my heart pounding in my chest.
He leans closer, his face inches from mine.
I can feel his warm breath on my skin, and I'm frozen in place, unsure of what to do next.
But before anything more can happen, a voice interrupts us.
"Excuse me," it says, "do you know where English II is?"
We both turn to see a girl standing in the hallway, looking at us with a confused expression.
Jayden straightens up and points down the hall.
"Third door on your left," he says.
The girl nods her thanks and hurries off.
Jayden turns back to me, his eyes searching mine.
For a moment, we just stare at each other, neither of us saying anything.
Then he smiles softly and says, "Welcome to Springdale High."
I smile back at him, feeling a little shy but also happy that he's talking to me. Mira grabs my arm and pulls me away before I can say anything else to him.
"Come on," she says.
"We don't want to be late for class."
I let her lead me down the hall, looking back over my shoulder one last time at Jayden.
He's still watching me, a small smile on his face.
Still dazed from the encounter, I stumble along beside Mira down the crowded hallway.
My books are clutched tightly to my chest, where my heart still won't stop pounding.
I try to focus on finding Room 204, but Mira keeps nudging me with her elbow, that knowing look on her face.
"Someone's got the hots for the hot senior," she sing-songs under her breath.
I shoot her a glare, feeling my cheeks burn even redder.
"Shut up," I mutter, picking up my pace.
Mira just laughs and skips ahead of me, turning to walk backwards so she can keep watching my flustered reaction.
I follow her into our first class, barely registering the teacher's welcome speech.
My mind keeps replaying that moment in the hallway - his warm hands, gentle smile, the way he helped me up.
I can still feel his fingers brushing against mine as he handed me my books.
A shiver runs down my spine at the memory, and I sink lower in my seat, trying to hide my blush.
But then something catches my eye.
A photo tucked into the corner of a binder belonging to the student sitting next to me.
It's a picture of Jayden with his arm around a pretty blonde girl.
They're both wearing formal attire, probably from last year's prom.
My stomach drops as I realize he must have a girlfriend.
Of course he does, I think to myself, sinking even lower in my seat.
What was I thinking?
Embarrassment washes over me at how quickly I let myself get carried away by that chance encounter. The rest of the class is a blur as I try to focus on anything but that photo.
But it's seared into my brain - Jayden's smile, his arm around that other girl, the way they look so happy together.
When the bell finally rings, signaling the end of class, I practically sprint out of the room.
Mira catches up to me in the hallway, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost," she says, trying to keep pace with my hurried steps.
I hesitate for a moment, then blurt out, "Jayden has a girlfriend."
Mira pulls me into a quiet corner by the lockers, away from the bustling hallway.
She wraps an arm around my shoulders, and I lean against the cold metal, fighting back tears.
"It's okay to feel disappointed," she says softly, squeezing my arm.
I nod, grateful for her understanding but also embarrassed by how much I let myself get worked up over a brief encounter.
A group of seniors walks by, laughing and chatting, and I quickly wipe my eyes.
Mira gives me a sympathetic smile.
"Hey, why don't we get ice cream after school? My treat."
I force a smile, telling myself it was silly to read so much into that moment with Jayden.
"Sounds good," I say, trying to shake off the lingering disappointment.
The warning bell rings, signaling that our next class is about to start.
Walking into Biology, I slide into an empty seat near the back of the room, hoping to stay invisible after the emotional morning.
Mira takes the seat beside me, giving my hand a quick squeeze before pulling out her notebook.
The teacher begins droning on about cell structures, and I zone out, doodling mindlessly in the margins of my notes.
Tiny broken hearts and squiggles fill the page as I try to focus on anything but the memory of those warm brown eyes.
When someone mentions the varsity football team's upcoming game, my pen freezes mid-stroke.
I force myself to focus on mitochondria instead of remembering the way Jayden's smile made my heart skip a beat.
While copying notes about cell division, I notice Mira's attention drift from the board to something behind me.
She leans closer, pretending to check my notes, but I can tell she's eavesdropping on a conversation.
The classroom door is open, and through it, I see Jayden standing with a tall guy wearing a leather jacket.
They're talking in hushed voices, but Jayden keeps glancing into our classroom.
His friend elbows him, saying something that makes Jayden smile sheepishly.
The friend's expression sours when he mentions "Natalia" and rolls his eyes.
I turn back to my notes, determined to forget Jayden, but his lingering gaze makes it impossible.
