Today was the first day of school.
I woke up early feeling happy, which wasn’t normal for me.
I had liked Alex Watson since the 5th grade.
He was two years older than me, and I knew it was crazy and totally impossible for someone like him to even notice someone like me.
But today, he actually said hey to me and called me by my name.
It was all I could do not to faint right there on the spot.
I thought I was going to die.
The rest of the day was a total blur.
All I could think about was Alex and our little encounter at our lockers.
I couldn’t believe he actually knew my name.
I thought I was going to be sick, but in a good way, like when you eat too much candy.
I felt happy and self-conscious all at the same time.
The Crush
I clutch my biology textbook to my chest, barely noticing other students bumping past me in the crowded hallway.
My feet move automatically toward Mrs. Peterson’s classroom while my mind drifts back to this morning.
The way Alex’s eyes crinkled when he smiled.
How he shifted his basketball to his other arm before saying my name.
"Hey, Maggie."
The Crush
Just two words, but they keep echoing in my head.
My heart flutters remembering how close he stood to me, the fresh scent of his cologne mixing with the metallic smell of the lockers.
I sit through Mrs. Peterson’s lecture, barely registering her words about cell division and mitosis.
I doodle Alex’s name in tiny letters along the margin of my notebook, then draw a heart around it.
The bell rings, signaling the end of class, and I gather my books slowly, watching as the other students file out.
Standing at my desk, I check my reflection in the screen of my phone.
I tuck a few loose strands of hair behind my ears and wish I had worn something nicer than my old blue sweater.
My heart pounds as I step into the hallway, clutching my books tightly against my chest.
I see Alex down the corridor, talking to his basketball teammates.
I take a deep breath and walk over, trying to act casual.
"Hey, Maggie," Alex says again, his smile as warm as it was this morning.
"Hi, Alex," I reply, my voice steadier than I expected, "I didn't know you knew my name before today."
The Crush
Standing by his locker, he fidgets with the strap of his backpack while he answers me.
"I remember you from church youth group last summer," he says, "You came to the bonfire at the lake."
I nod, feeling my cheeks flush.
"Oh, yeah," I say, "I remember that."
A guy with messy brown hair and a basketball under his arm walks up to us.
"Hey, Alex," he says, "Coach wants us to run drills after school today."
Alex nods, then turns back to me.
"Hey, why don't you eat lunch with us today?" he asks.
My stomach flips over at his suggestion.
I glance around at the other students passing us in the hallway.
The Crush
Some of them stare at us curiously, probably wondering why Alex Watson is talking to me.
The guy who came up to us raises his eyebrows but doesn't say anything.
"Sure, I'd like that," I say, trying to sound casual despite the excitement bubbling inside me.
Alex grins and nods toward the cafeteria.
"Great, meet us by the big table near the windows," he says, "I'll save you a seat."
