"Can you believe that?"
I asked my bestfriend Amber Hosten, pointing with my head towards Simon Chornyi, the guy I have a big crush on.
He was sitting a few rows further on the other side of the classroom and I could just see his blonde hair and his blue eyes.
Oh how gorgeous he was!
Simon was not only good-looking, he was also smart.
He loved history and that was something we had in common.
"Oh, Simon. He's so gorgeous," Amber sighed.
She knew all about my crush on him, but she didn't understand it.
"Why are you so in love with him?"
She asked once, confused.
I rolled my eyes at her.
"You don't get it," I said.
"He's got a brain. He's not like those dumbasses who only care about football."
She nodded at that.
She had a crush on someone too.
On Maarten Moncarey to be exact.
He was the third person in their group of friends and he was the most laidback one.
He was charming and good-looking as well.
I grinned mischievously at her now.
"And don't even get me started on Maarten," I said.
She blushed at that and hit me in the arm.
"You shut up," she growled at me, her face scowling at me.
The Crush
I looked away from her and back to the front of the class.
Simon was shifting in his seat now and his head was slightly turned towards our direction.
My heart skipped a beat when our eyes met for a brief moment.
I quickly ducked my head down and pretended to be busy with my textbook, but I could feel his eyes on me.
I could feel my cheeks heating up and I hoped that they weren't bright red right now.
Amber noticed it and she started giggling, poking me in the ribs with her pencil.
I tried to kick her under the desk to make her stop, but she just grinned wider at me.
I dared to look up again and I saw Simon looking at us while pretending to take notes.
He was so checking me out!
I couldn't help but smile, knowing that this was just the beginning.
The Crush
I tried to focus on the lesson again, but my hands were shaking and I could barely write anything down.
I was too busy thinking about that eye contact I had with Simon.
The teacher was talking about our next project and how we would be divided into groups of four.
I started doodling hearts in the margins of my notebook.
I was so excited!
Amber kept whispering in my ear that Simon definitely saw me and that he was checking me out.
I couldn't concentrate on anything anymore.
I just kept looking at the back of his head and how his shoulders moved when he wrote something down.
Suddenly something landed on my desk and I looked up to see who threw it.
It was a folded paper airplane and it glided perfectly onto my desk.
The Crush
My stomach dropped when I picked it up and carefully unfolded it.
It was a cartoon of our teacher with big ears and a big nose, looking like a rabbit.
I frowned at it, not knowing who drew it.
I looked around the class, but nobody was looking at me.
I shrugged and threw it in my bag, thinking that it was probably thrown by one of the guys in the back.
I didn't have much time to think about it because another folded note landed on my desk.
This time I saw who threw it.
It was Amber and she had a big grin on her face.
I opened it up and this time there was no cartoon, but a scribbled message.
"He's totally into you!"
She scrawled with a dozen hearts underneath.
I rolled my eyes at her, but I couldn't help but smile.
The Crush
The teacher started talking again and I tried to focus on what he was saying, but I couldn't stop fidgeting with my pen.
I kept looking over my shoulder at Simon, who was actually taking notes now.
His head was tilted slightly and his blue eyes were concentrated on his notebook. The clock ticked painfully slow and I couldn't wait for the lesson to be over.
Finally, Simon shifted in his seat and looked over his shoulder at me.
He mouthed something and my heart stopped beating for a moment.
The Crush
My hands grew clammy and I looked down at my desk, pretending to write something down.
Amber was practically vibrating next to me and she was gripping my arm with her hands.
She was trying to act like she was listening to the teacher's droning voice, but she was actually looking at Simon.
I could feel his eyes on me again, but I didn't dare to look up.
Instead, I started doodling random shapes in my notebook.
My eyes darted to his back a few times, but I tried to act natural.
Simon tore a corner from his notebook and started writing something down with his pen.
He moved it quickly across the paper and folded it into a square before putting it in his mouth.
He chewed on it for a moment, looking straight ahead at the teacher's back.
He waited until the teacher turned to the whiteboard and then he passed the note behind him smoothly.
The Crush
I hesitated for a moment before reaching out to take it, my fingers brushing against his.
Amber leaned closer, whispering excitedly, "Open it already, before the teacher sees!"
With trembling hands, I unfolded the note and read Simon's messy handwriting: "Meet me by the lockers after class?"
I looked up to see if the teacher was looking, but he was still writing on the whiteboard.
I tucked the note into my textbook, waiting for the class to be over.
When we were finally dismissed, I took the note out of my book and studied it more closely.
Underneath the fluorescent lights in the classroom, I noticed something strange.
There was a faint pattern underneath Simon's messy handwriting.
It looked like some sort of code.
I nudged Amber with my elbow and whispered, "Look at this."
I tilted the paper so that she could see it better.
She looked at me with big eyes and then glanced at Simon's back, who was packing his bag.
"It looks like there is another message underneath," I whispered.
The Crush
"Maybe it's a code."
Amber looked at me thoughtfully and then whispered back, "Maybe if you hold it up to the window, you can see what's underneath."
I carefully held the paper up to the window and tilted it so that the light from outside fell on it. Amber gasped next to me and I frowned in confusion.
Underneath Simon's messy handwriting, there was another message written in a different ink.
It looked like a cipher.
Before we could look any closer, the teacher walked by our desk and we quickly shoved the note in my textbook again.
I glanced over my shoulder and saw Simon looking back at me with an unreadable expression on his face.
The bell rang loudly in the hallway and Amber started packing her things into her bag.
"Did you see what it said?" Amber asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
I shook my head, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety.
The Crush
"Let's go to the lockers," she urged, "we can figure it out there before he shows up."
I clutched the note tightly in my hand and nodded, following Amber out of the classroom.
She dragged me through the crowded hallway, weaving in and out of the other students who were rushing to their next class.
Instead of going straight to the lockers, she veered left towards the art room.
"Where are we going?"
I asked, confused.
"We need privacy to figure it out," she said mysteriously.
The art room was empty and it smelled like paint and clay.
We slipped inside and shut the door behind us, our footsteps echoing on the linoleum floor.
There was a table by the window that was splattered with paint and dried clay.
Amber smoothed out the note on the table and we both leaned over it. The afternoon sun shone through the window, illuminating the hidden message underneath Simon's handwriting.
The Crush
Amber pulled her phone out of her pocket and started typing away, looking for patterns of ciphers online.
I traced my finger over the strange symbols on the paper, trying to make sense of them.
The symbols were made up of curved lines and dots, like some sort of ancient language.
I held the note up to the window and tilted it so that the light fell on it at different angles.
The symbols seemed to shift and move in the light.
I looked over at Amber's phone and saw that she was scrolling through images on Google.
She stopped at one image and zoomed in on it.
It was a picture of an old library book page.
The page was yellowed and dusty, but the symbols on it were eerily similar to the ones on Simon's note.
"Look," I said, pointing to the image on her phone.
"I think I've seen these symbols before."
Amber looked at me curiously and then back at the image on her phone.
The Crush
"Where?"
She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I'm not sure," I said, "but I think I saw them in the library last week during study hall."
Amber looked thoughtful for a moment and then started typing again on her phone.
I went back to tracing my finger over the symbols on the note, trying to figure out their meaning.
The symbols seemed to shift and dance in the afternoon sun. Amber gasped next to me and I turned to look at what she had found online.
It was an image of another old library book page, but this time there was a caption underneath it: "Ancient Mesopotamian writing. The oldest known form of writing."
I looked at her with wide eyes, my hands starting to sweat.
Simon must have seen us in the library that day when we were looking for books about secret societies.
He must have known that we would recognize the symbols from before.
The Crush
But how did he know that?
And what did they mean?
I grabbed a pencil from Amber's backpack and started copying the symbols down next to each other on a piece of paper.
The symbols seemed to form a pattern, like they were pointing to something.
I showed the paper to Amber and she nodded, her eyes wide.
She stuffed the paper in her backpack and grabbed her books.
"Let's go to the library," she whispered urgently.
I grabbed my backpack and followed her out of the art room, back into the hallway.
The hallway was empty now that everyone had gone to their next class.
We rushed down the corridor towards the library, the note clutched in my hand.
We were supposed to meet Simon by the lockers, but I had a feeling that this was more important.
The library was quiet when we slipped inside, except for the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
The librarian looked up at us from behind her desk, peering over her glasses at us.

Amber went over to stand near the entrance, keeping watch for anyone who might come in while I went straight for the ancient history section where we had studied last week. The shelves stretched all the way up to the ceiling, lined with books that smelled like old dust.
I ran my fingers over the spines of the books, looking for one in particular.
Finally, I found it: "Ancient Writing Systems."
I pulled the book off the shelf and opened it up, scanning each yellowed page carefully.
Amber kept watch while I compared the curved marks on the pages to the ones on Simon's note.
My fingers trembled slightly as I turned the brittle pages, worried that they would tear.
The musty smell of the book filled my nose as I leaned closer to study the tiny printed examples.
I flipped through page after page, searching for a match.
The Crush
Finally, on page 247, I saw it: the same interlocking circles and dots that were on Simon's note.
I sat cross-legged on the floor of the library, the book open on my knees.
The note was balanced on top of the book and my notebook was open on the floor in front of me.
I started scribbling furiously as soon as I realized what the symbols meant.
They were an ancient counting system used by merchants in Mesopotamia thousands of years ago.
Each curved line and dot represented a certain number or letter.
I started copying down the translation, my pencil moving rapidly over the page.
Each symbol matched perfectly to its corresponding letter or number.
Amber leaned over my shoulder to look at the symbols and pointed out some patterns that she had noticed.
The first few translated easily: "Meet me at..."
My heart pounded in my chest as I worked through the rest.
The Crush
"Meet me at the old clock tower," I whispered, my voice trembling with excitement and fear.
Amber's eyes widened as she whispered back, "That's where Simon's been hiding out, isn't it?"
I nodded, feeling a chill run down my spine. "But why would he want us to meet him there?"
I carefully placed the ancient writing book back on the shelf while Amber paced nervously behind me.
The final bell rang, echoing through the empty hallway and quiet library.
We grabbed our backpacks from the corner and double-checked that I had Simon's note safely tucked in my pocket.
My heart was racing as we slipped past the other students rushing to their buses home.
We paused at the entrance of the library, the door handle cold in my hand.
The Crush
The old clock tower loomed in the distance, its shadow stretching out across the empty school courtyard.
Amber glanced at me, her voice barely above a whisper. "What if he's in trouble? What if he needs our help?"
I hesitated, feeling the weight of her words. "Then we have to go, Amber. We can't just leave him there."
She nodded, determination replacing the fear in her eyes. "Let's find out what Simon's gotten himself into."
