"Hey Johnny, could you give me a lift home after practice? I need to have a quick chat with my mom before heading back to your place," Lizzy requested as she strolled into the wrestling room with her sister Isabelle, who was busy preparing for her team practice.
The wrestling team had taken Lizzy under their wing, treating her like a sister and ensuring everyone knew she was off-limits to any unwanted attention.
They would say to the other boys at school, "don't touch her. She is one of us."
Rumor had it that Johnny, V, and Lizzy were about to embark on a year-long health class project that would test their mettle with the daunting task of simulating parenthood.
The trio was engrossed in gathering knowledge and honing their skills, preparing themselves for the intricate challenge of balancing high school life with the responsibilities of nurturing a child.
They were diligently absorbing all the necessary knowledge and skills, preparing themselves for the formidable challenge of juggling the demands of high school with the responsibilities of pseudo-parenthood.
The Cowboy's Crush
I leaned against the wall of the wrestling room, observing Johnny as he wrapped up his conversation with Coach Martinez.
My heart skipped a beat when he turned to me with that captivating grin.
The fluorescent lights above highlighted the beads of sweat on his neck as he grabbed his gym bag.
I clutched my backpack tightly, attempting to appear nonchalant while the other wrestlers filed past us.
Johnny pulled his truck keys from his pocket, the metal clinking against his water bottle.
"Ready?" he asked, holding the door open for me.
I nodded, feeling the weight of the coming year settle over us like a silent promise.
The Cowboy's Crush
I slid into the passenger seat, catching a whiff of his post-practice deodorant mixed with the scent of leather seats.
He tossed his gym bag in the back before settling behind the wheel, his eyes never leaving mine.
The engine rumbled to life, and he cleared his throat, his gaze drifting toward the road ahead.
"So I was thinking," he said, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel, "maybe we should set up a schedule for this family project. You know, like who picks up V from practice and stuff."
The Cowboy's Crush
I fidgeted with the seatbelt, my fingers tracing the intricate patterns of the buckle.
"Yeah, that sounds like a plan," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
The car slowed to a stop at the red light, and Johnny turned to me, his gaze probing.
"Okay, so maybe we can take turns picking up V? I mean, if you're free after school tomorrow, you could pick him up from practice and bring him to my place? Then I'll pick him up on Thursday. Then we can alternate?"
I stared at my hands clasped in my lap, the silence between us stretching like a tight rubber band.
"Um... I can't drive," I whispered, the words escaping my lips like a secret shared in a crowded room.
Johnny's fingers halted their rhythmic dance on the steering wheel, his gaze locked on mine.
The Cowboy's Crush
He reached for his phone, the muscled length of his arm stretching across the console.
The light turned green, and he glanced back at the road, his eyes flicking between me and the cars ahead.
I watched as he read the message on his screen, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips.
"V's practice got canceled tomorrow," he said, turning to me once more.
"We'll have the house to ourselves tomorrow afternoon."
My stomach did a somersault, and I gripped the seatbelt tighter, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Yeah... maybe we could work on that family project paperwork then?"
Johnny nodded, his gaze lingering on me for a moment too long before returning to the road ahead.
The Cowboy's Crush
I shifted in my seat, watching his hands grip the steering wheel tighter.
The car seemed to shrink, the air thickening between us like a warm mist.
He pulled into my driveway but didn't turn off the engine, the hum of it vibrating beneath me.
I reached for my backpack, my movements slow and deliberate, buying time.
Johnny's suggestion hung in the air, a heavy promise waiting to be claimed.
My hand froze on the door handle when he spoke again, his voice low and husky.
"Hey."
I turned back, catching his eyes in the fading afternoon light filtering through the windshield.
He was closer now, close enough that I could see the flecks of gold in his brown eyes.
The Cowboy's Crush
My heart pounded in my chest, a steady beat that echoed in my ears.
I forced myself to meet his gaze, to hold the weight of his stare.
"Chinese food?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that sent shivers down my spine.
The words came out of me in a rush, my voice shaking like a leaf.
Johnny released his grip on the steering wheel, his shoulders relaxing.
"Yeah, I know a good place," he said, pulling out his phone and scrolling through the menu from Golden Palace.
I leaned forward, peering over his shoulder at the screen, catching another whiff of his cologne that danced on the edge of my senses.
The Cowboy's Crush
I leaned back in my seat, watching as he scrolled through the menu with a practiced ease.
His arm brushed mine, sending electricity through me.
The air in the car grew thick, heavy with unspoken words.
He tilted the screen toward me, pointing out his usual order of chicken lo mein and fried rice.
I nodded, my voice caught in my throat.
"Um... I'll get the egg rolls too," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
He added them to the order without hesitation, his thumb hovering over the "Place Order" button as he turned to me once more.
"Want to eat at my place?" he asked, his voice softer than usual.
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
The Cowboy's Crush
He put the car in gear and backed out of my driveway, navigating the familiar streets of our neighborhood with a practiced ease.
I stared straight ahead, my hands clasped tightly in my lap to hide their trembling.
The radio played softly, some country song I'd normally sing along to but couldn't hear now.
Johnny took the turn onto Oak Street faster than usual, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.
When we hit a pothole, my shoulder bumped against his arm.
Neither of us pulled away.
The setting sun cast a golden glow over the houses as we approached his neighborhood, the streetlights flickering to life.
Johnny cleared his throat, but didn't speak.
The silence between us was louder than any words could have been.
The Cowboy's Crush
I glanced at his phone, the screen lighting up on the center console between us.
The notification caught my eye - some contest he'd apparently entered.
He reached for it, but I grabbed it first, my fingers brushing against his.
"You won something," I said, holding up the screen.
He leaned closer to read it, his shoulder pressing against mine.
The car felt smaller suddenly.
"Probably spam," he muttered, taking the phone anyway.
While he was distracted reading, I watched his profile, the way his brow furrowed slightly as he clicked the message to see more details.
The Cowboy's Crush
The Golden Palace's "Year of Romance" sweepstakes grand prize - two round-trip tickets to Paris - was actually real.
I stared at the screen in disbelief, reading the details over and over again.
Johnny's fingers shook as he clicked through the confirmation email, his shoulder still pressed against mine.
The Chinese restaurant's logo flashed at the top of the message, followed by travel dates and congratulations.
My heart pounded in my chest as I realized what this meant - a week alone with Johnny, no pretend family project, no watchful wrestling team.
Just us.
He turned to me, his face inches from mine.
