I am a single mom to two amazing kids.
My oldest son has autism, and my youngest daughter is his biggest fan.
This is the story of how my oldest son’s senior year of high school turned out to be worse than I expected.
My son Isaac was a high school senior, and I had no idea that his senior year was going to be the worst year of his life and mine.
It started two weeks before prom when the whole school learned that my son wanted to take his sister as his prom date, and then he had the nerve to tell everyone that he wanted to wear a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, and a shirt tucked into blue jeans.
Now, I know what you’re thinking.
That sounds like a really cool outfit, and I would agree with you if it were up to me.
However, two of his teachers had a problem with it.
They were Miss Tippet and Miss Wilson.
They told him he couldn’t wear that, and they told him why.
They told him he couldn’t wear that because they were "stuck up tight assholes."
Those were the words they used.
I was called into the school, and those same two ladies told me what they had told my son.
They told me that my son was not allowed to wear that outfit, and they told me why.

I sat in a chair at the kitchen table, gripping my coffee mug.
My daughter was in her room, trying on her new powder-blue prom dress.
She walked into the kitchen, and the fabric swished around her legs.
The powder blue matched the color of my son’s favorite western shirt.
My son stood in the doorway, watching us.
He was already wearing his cowboy boots, hat, and shirt.
He was practicing his line-dancing steps.
I pulled out my phone and started recording a video of them together.
I knew that I would need to prove how happy and appropriate they looked.
My daughter came over to her brother and helped him adjust his bolo tie.

Then they posed for pictures.
The doorbell rang again, and I knew what it was.
It was another summons from the school administration.
I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the pictures of my son and daughter on my phone.
I opened Facebook and created a new post.
One by one, I uploaded the pictures - my son beaming in his cowboy hat, my daughter fixing his bolo tie, both of them practicing their dance steps.
The joy on their faces made my heart ache.
I typed out a simple caption: "Does my son deserve to be banned from his senior prom for wanting to wear this outfit?"
My finger hovered over the "Post" button as tears blurred my vision.
Finally, I pressed it.
Isaac walked over, noticing my distress.
"Mom, are you okay?" he asked, concern lacing his voice.
I forced a smile and replied, "Just trying to figure out how to make them see what I see in you."
