I was amazed when my friend took me out into his backyard to a spot that was fenced in.
He didn’t explain what I was going to see and I didn’t know.
I was completely unprepared for what was waiting for me.
"Wow!" I exclaimed.
"What are those?"
My friend smiled and put a hand on my shoulder.
"They’re me," he said.
I looked again at the fenced in area of his backyard.
There were four of them.
They were each identical to my friend, but they had four legs and four feet.
They were bare, with no shoes or socks.
They ran and played in the fenced area, holding each other and rolling on the ground.
They enjoyed each other’s company and seemed to enjoy pushing and shoving each other.
"What do they do?"
I asked my friend, who leaned against the fence with his arms crossed as he watched them play.
"They like to play together," he said.
"They like to hold each other and rub their faces against each other. They like to breathe each other’s scents."
"Why do they have four feet?"
I asked.
"I don’t know," he said.
"They just do. I don’t know why."
"How long have they been here?"
Sheer curiosity made me ask these questions.
My friend didn’t seem to mind answering them.
"They showed up about six months ago. At first there was only one. Every couple of days a new one would appear."
"There are four?"
I asked.
