It’s a good job, really.
The kind of job where you can’t really get into trouble.
Not with the most boring books in the world, anyway.
Not with the quietest people in town.
Not in one of the sleepiest little places on earth.
I mean, what kind of person would even want to cause trouble in a place like this?
Not me, that’s for sure.
I’m more of a blend-into-the-background kind of person.
More of a watch-and-wait kind of person.
More of a don’t-even-think-about-trying-to-get-attention-from-me kind of person.
Definitely not a seek-the-spotlight kind of person.
So overall, being a librarian is a good job for me.
Especially since I’m only doing it part-time, until I finish my MA in Information Studies.
I’m restacking the biography section when I hear the familiar squeak of window cleaning.
I glance up to see Nathan working his way methodically along the glass, his movements careful and precise.
He doesn’t see me watching through the shelves.
My fingers pause on a dusty spine as I take in the way he’s rolled up his sleeves, revealing tanned forearms.
His dark hair is mussed from the breeze, and I wonder if it’s as soft as it looks.
I pretend to organize books while stealing glances at him through the shelves.
I notice how he double-checks each corner for streaks, how he wipes down the window frames with a separate cloth.
When he moves on to the next window, I shuffle sideways along the shelves, following his progress.
Ben catches my eye from behind the reference desk and raises an eyebrow. I quickly duck behind the tall shelves, my cheeks warming.
I retreat to the reference section and busy myself reorganizing the encyclopedias.
My hands still tremble a little from being caught staring.
Through the gaps in the shelves, I see Nathan moving to the next window.
He wipes the glass in broad, circular strokes, his movements economical and deliberate.
I fumble with a heavy volume of World History, almost dropping it when he pauses his work to stretch.
The morning sun catches his shoulders through his white t-shirt, highlighting the strong lines of his muscles.
I’m so focused on steadying my breathing that I don’t notice him shifting position until I look up and find him directly opposite my window.
Our eyes meet, and I realize there's nowhere left to hide.
