I walked Sarah home after a young man with a crude smile had tried to hit on her.
Seeing my old friend from elementary school being sexually harassed made me lose my temper, so I made the guy pay for what he did.
As we walked together, Sarah was bubbling with excitement.
“My classmate told me that her cousin landed a role in a TV drama and became famous all over the country!
I’m going to attend an audition tomorrow!”
Sarah was a pure and kind girl, so she didn’t have much defense against those kinds of people.
She grew up in the countryside, so she had always been very innocent.
If I hadn’t kicked the guy’s ass, he might have done something to her.
To be honest, I didn’t like this side of myself either, but it was ingrained in me since I was a child.
I’d rather be called paranoid than care too little about my friends and family.
It was raining heavily, so I took off my jacket and put it over Sarah’s head.
Her blonde hair was perfectly straight and beautiful.
She smiled at me, her eyes shining with joy and excitement.
We were both 24 years old.
I had been working as an office clerk for two years, while she had graduated from college for a year but hadn’t found a job yet.
“I’m not going to be an office lady like you,” Sarah said dreamily.
“I want to be an actress!”
I smiled and pinched her nose, feeling happy for her.
Life was short, so it was good to have a dream that could make you happy.
As we walked, we suddenly saw a faint light in an alleyway on one side of the road.
It seemed like it had been raining heavily before, but now it had stopped.
The raindrops were still falling from the sky, but they couldn’t pass through the light and disappeared halfway through.
“Isn’t this similar to that movie we watched last time?
The aliens used this method to change our environment,” Sarah asked in shock.
“Are you talking about Arrival?
But that’s just fiction,” I said skeptically.
Sarah looked at me and smiled sweetly.
We were standing at the entrance of the alleyway.
The light was just in front of us, and it looked as though we could touch it if we reached our hands out.
The light was very beautiful, and it gave off a strange feeling.
It felt as if it was pulling us toward it.
“This is strange.
Why don’t we go in and take a look?”
Sarah said, unable to contain her curiosity.
It was past 10 p.
m., but the street was still full of people because there were many bars nearby.
However, no one was paying any attention to the alleyway in front of us.
“Are you crazy?
We should go home now!
You have to audition tomorrow!”
I reminded Sarah, who was always curious and impulsive.
Although I was very curious about this light, it was already so late, and I had to go to work tomorrow morning.
I had to get up early to take my grandparents to the hospital, so it wouldn’t do me any good if I stayed out late.
“Don’t be such a coward!
You’ve always been this way!”
Just as I was about to say something more, Sarah suddenly grabbed my wrist and dragged me into the alleyway!
We just entered the light, and my vision suddenly became dark.
I subconsciously closed my eyes, but when I opened them again, I realized that the scenery in front of me had changed.
The city we were familiar with had disappeared, replaced by a dense forest.
The skyscrapers that used to stand tall were nowhere to be seen.
The place we were in now was just like a typical jungle.
The strangest thing was that the trees in this jungle were very tall!
They looked like they were hundreds of meters high.
There were some huge leaves growing on the tree trunks, serving as a ladder that led up to the canopy.
We were both very shocked by the sudden change of scenery, so we stood there blankly.
I was the first to react.
“What the hell is going on?
Where are we?”
I couldn’t help but look back at the alleyway behind us.
It was already covered by the trees in the jungle; it looked like we could never find our way back.
It was impossible to return to our world!
We were really screwed this time!
“We’re doomed!”
I suddenly felt a sense of fear that I couldn’t explain.
The light behind us had already disappeared, so there was no way for us to return home.
I didn’t have any friends besides Sarah, and all of my family members except my grandparents lived in my hometown.
Now that we were stuck here, they would be worried sick about us!
I remembered that I hadn’t returned home for a month because I was too busy at work.
I wouldn’t have gone home today if it hadn’t been for Sarah.
My grandparents must be missing me right now!
I was an only child.
My parents had passed away when I was young, so my grandparents brought me up.
I couldn’t bear to leave them alone either!
“What should we do?”
When she saw the panic on my face, Sarah’s heart ached.
She held my hand tightly and said with a smile, “Don’t worry!
We still have each other.
I’m sure we can find a way out together!”
I took a deep breath to calm myself down.
I knew that Sarah was comforting me.
I couldn’t just wallow in self-pity at this point.
Moreover, Sarah was always full of energy and enthusiasm, so I tried to calm down and think of a solution.
“Let’s go take a look first.
Maybe we can find some clues!”
I said after holding Sarah’s hands tightly for a moment.
We were still standing at the entrance of the alleyway.
The trees in front of us were very dense, so we couldn’t see what was behind them.
The weather here was very hot and humid.
The ground was full of mud and water; we could even hear the chirping of insects and birds around us.
I was starting to get nervous again.
We were just ordinary people; how could we be able to survive in such an environment?
If there were wild animals here, we would probably be eaten alive before we could even scream for help!
Just as my thoughts were running wild, Sarah suddenly grabbed my hand and said with a smile, “Don’t act like you’re about to die!
There might be a way back when we find it!”
Her tone was very calm.
It was as if we were just on an ordinary trip.
However, reality was cruel.
It seemed that there really was no way for us to return.
If we couldn’t find a way out in the end…
“It’s okay if we can’t go back!”
Sarah said with a wave of her hand.
She seemed to have seen through my mind.
“There are authorities everywhere.
We can find them for help!”
Although Sarah was not very smart and good at studying since she was young, she was very kind-hearted and always willing to help others.
She also believed that everyone was kind-hearted like her.
She could easily make friends with people she met for the first time.
When she helped her friends in trouble in the past, she would usually ask for help from adults or teachers.
It seemed that she still retained these habits even after she grew up.
She thought that as long as we asked for help from others, they would definitely help us!
As for what these so-called “authorities” would do to us after they found us…
I wasn’t sure.
But I knew that the more I thought about it, the more afraid I would be!
I must not let Sarah see me like this!
I took out my phone from my pocket and tried to make a call.
The signal here was very poor.
I didn’t hold out any hope of getting through.
However, Sarah’s actions made me speechless.
While I was dialing the number, she kept shouting towards the sky, “Is there anyone here?”
“John is calling for help!
Please answer the phone if you hear it!”
I was already mentally prepared.
After trying several times with no luck at all, I finally gave up.
The two of us held hands and summoned up our courage before stepping into the woods.
The dense trees completely blocked out the sunlight.
The temperature of the surroundings dropped instantly.
The chirping of insects and birds seemed to have disappeared as well.
The world in front of us was so quiet and vast that we couldn’t see even one person.
It was as if we were the only two people left in the world.
I suddenly felt cold all over.
Sarah’s steps had quickened unconsciously.
Seeing her like this made me feel bad.
She must be feeling very nervous right now.
“Don’t worry!
I’m here with you!”
I said to Sarah in a gentle voice.
The sudden change of environment made my mood fluctuate as well.
However, I had to cheer up for Sarah’s sake!
“But…What about Alex?”
Sarah suddenly stopped in her tracks and asked worriedly.
I frowned when I heard her mention Alex.
“You’re thinking about Alex at this moment?”
Alex Thompson was my best friend and also my colleague.
He and I had known each other for five years.
He used to be the star player of our school’s tennis team and had a bad temper.
He would often make enemies wherever he went.
However, he changed after we entered the workforce.
Perhaps it was because he realized that his bad temper had affected his future prospects too much.
He became more mature and reliable.
