"Jiwoo Kim, Dajeong UNIVERSITY 4th year, four subjects, president of four social clubs, four internships, volunteer work four times a month, teacher of two subjects for three years in high school, tutor for three students, goal is to become a CEO."
This was written on a sticky note that I had attached to my resume and handed to the person in charge of hiring.
I thought it would leave a strong impression on him and show him that I was not a typical university student.
I landed an interview with the company a week later and was hired as an intern immediately.
I was over the moon!
I thought I finally found a secure way to get hired after graduation.
The CEO who I had yet to meet was known to be very cold and strict with his employees.
He didn’t even show up at the year-end parties and nobody had seen what he looked like.
The employees called him ‘the ghost’.
I didn’t care about who my boss was.
I just wanted to get hired!
I vowed to myself that I would not give this CEO any reason to fire me and worked very hard every single day.
However, my dream job ended abruptly two weeks later when the CEO called for me and dismissed me without giving me a reason.
"Are you really going to dismiss me after only giving me a two-week internship?"
"Yes.""May I ask why?"
"It’s none of your business."
"Is it because of my work performance?"
The CEO's Unexpected Offer
I stared at the CEO’s face that showed no expression.
My hands were clenched into fists under his mahogany desk.
The afternoon sun cast harsh shadows on the CEO’s suit and tie, making him look like a cold, precise machine.
I tried to say something else, but the CEO’s unwavering gaze stopped me.
I felt my shoulders slump from the weight of my failed internship crush.
I stood up slowly and smoothed out my wrinkled blazer.
Then, I bowed deeply to the CEO and held the gesture for longer than necessary.
Without meeting his eyes again, I turned around and walked to the door.
"Wait," the CEO's voice halted me just as my hand touched the doorknob.
"There’s more to this than you realize, Jiwoo."
The CEO's Unexpected Offer
I turned back, confused, "What do you mean?"
I stood frozen by the door, my hand still gripping the doorknob.
CEO Park held out a plain white envelope toward me.
His usually stern face showed a hint of hesitation.
I took slow steps back to his desk and accepted the envelope from him.
The envelope felt heavy in my hand.
The paper was thick and smooth against my fingertips, expensive.
I started to open it, but the CEO raised his hand to stop me.
"Not here."
His eyes darted to the glass walls of his office where employees pretended not to stare at us.
He straightened his tie and regained his composure.
The CEO's Unexpected Offer
"Go home and read it carefully. Come back tomorrow morning with your answer."
