I died.
For what reason?
Because of overwork?
No, that's not a valid reason at all.
Because of exhaustion?
Pffft, that was just a cover up.
Because I was too stupid and naive to handle my so-called professional life.
That's the most accurate reason.
My name is Ava Thompson.
I was a lawyer working in one of the most prestigious law firms in the country before I died, of course.
My boss Jason Reed thought highly of me and my abilities.
He assigned me cases after cases to handle.
The more I handled, the more money I made for the firm and the happier he was with me.
But did he ever care whether I had enough rest or sleep to handle those cases?
Hear me out.
He forced me to work till midnight most days of the week and even gave me tons of homework during the weekends and public holidays.
Then he wondered why I caught a cold or a fever and couldn't come to work.
He would order me to visit the doctor and get medication.

I approached the door of Jason's office.
My spirit was seething with frustration.
I could see him sitting at his desk, talking on the phone.
He was laughing and seemed to be enjoying his conversation.
I waited for him to hang up.
He was wearing a casual white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and dark blue jeans.
His hair was messy and he looked like he had just rolled out of bed.
He leaned back in his chair and continued to talk on the phone.
After a few minutes, he hung up and started to type on his computer.
I cleared my throat to get his attention.
"Jason, you overworked me to death. I demand a better work-life balance."
My voice sounded different than usual, echoing in the room.

Jason looked around, wondering who said it.
"Who said that?"
He asked aloud, looking around the room.
"No one," he muttered to himself, shaking his head.
"You're stressed out. You need to take a break."
He picked up his phone and started to dial a number. "You assigned me too many cases. I couldn't sleep for days. I had no time for my family or friends. I couldn't even eat properly. I was so busy with work that I didn't have time to exercise."
I said, trying to make him understand my situation.
He stopped dialing and looked around the room again, confused.
"I'm sorry, who are you talking to? I thought you were stressed out."
He said, shaking his head again.
"I'm not stressed out. I'm dead. You overworked me to death."
I said, trying to make him understand my situation.
"What? No, that's not possible. You're just hallucinating because of stress."
He said, dismissing what I said.
"I don't have time for this nonsense. I need to call security."
He picked up his phone again and started dialing a number.
I knocked the phone out of his hand before he could finish dialing.
"Listen to me," I said sternly.
"I'm here to haunt you until you change."

He looked at me, his eyes wide with fear.
I hovered near his desk and watched him.
He shook his head again and waved his hand in front of him like he was trying to get rid of a fly.
I saw the vase on the edge of his desk and focused my energy on it.
It started to wobble back and forth.
It fell off the desk and shattered into a hundred pieces on the floor.
Jason jumped back in his seat, startled.
"Ava?" he whispered, looking around the room.
He finally realized that I was standing in front of him.
I repeated my demands, "I want a better work-life balance. I want to spend more time with my family and friends. I want to have time for myself."
He nodded slowly, his face pale.
"I'll do it. I'll change."

I said nothing and continued to stare at him.
He looked like he had seen a ghost.
Jason swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "Ava, I... I didn't realize it had gotten this bad."
"You never listened when I was alive," I replied, my tone firm yet sorrowful.
He lowered his gaze, guilt etched on his face. "I promise, things will be different from now on."
