I was a destitute art student.
Without enough money, I had to work as a proxy for others in taking exams.
The tuition for the upcoming semester was expensive, and I didn't have enough money after working as a proxy several times during the past few years.
Finally, after saving up for a year, I had almost enough money for the tuition.
Just as I was about to take the exam to secure my spot in the university, they informed me that my qualifications for the exam were revoked.
The reason was simple: they found out that I was a proxy and had cheated on my previous exams.
I was stunned.
All my previous efforts were for naught.
I didn't know what I should do next.
Just as I was hitting rock bottom, something unexpected happened.
A man who claimed to be the CEO of Li Group appeared before me.
He offered me a large sum of money as long as I could go to his home and create a piece of art according to his requirements every month.
I stood in the dimly lit corridor of the gallery, looking at the business card in my hand.
The golden letters that were embossed on the card caught my attention as I turned it over repeatedly in my hand.
CEO, Li Group.
My phone buzzed.
It was a call from Wang Jing.
She must have been worried after I rushed out of our lunch meeting earlier.
I silenced the call.
The security guard glanced at me impatientally.
The gallery was about to close soon. I pulled out my phone and searched for "Li Group" and "Li Zhen."
A few news articles popped up.
They were mostly about real estate developments and art collections.
It seemed like Li Zhen's offer was legitimate, but something didn't feel right when he mentioned "requirements" and smiled at me with a certain look in his eyes.
I decided to call Wang Jing back, hoping she could offer some advice.
"Hey, I need your opinion on something," I said as soon as she picked up.
"Sure, what's up? You sound tense," she replied, concern evident in her voice.
I paced around my tiny apartment as I explained Li Zhen's offer.
Wang Jing listened quietly until I mentioned his name.
"Wait, Li Zhen? From Li Group?"
Her voice was sharp and urgent, like she had just heard a bombshell.
I paused in my pacing.
"Yeah, that's what he said. Why? Do you know him?"
I could hear her breathing heavily on the other end of the line.
"Stay put. I'll be there in twenty minutes," she said before hanging up.
Twenty minutes later, Wang Jing rushed into my apartment with her laptop clutched tightly in her hands.
She sat down on the couch and booted up her laptop while I watched curiously.
"What's going on?"
I asked, sitting down beside her.
She didn't answer me.
Instead, she pulled up a few news articles on her laptop and showed them to me.
They were all about art auctions and criminal investigations. "What does this have to do with anything?"
I asked, confused.
Wang Jing's fingers flew across the keyboard as she typed furiously.
After a few minutes, she pulled up a forum post on her laptop screen.
It was titled "Li Group involved in counterfeit masterpieces scandal."
My stomach dropped when I saw the screenshots of forum posts that were attached to the post.
They were all from different people who claimed to have received large sums of money from Li Group for creating art pieces according to their requirements.
The posts also included photos of the business cards they had received from Li Group, which looked exactly like the one I had received earlier.
Wang Jing continued typing away as I sat there in stunned silence.
After a few more minutes, she pulled up another article on her laptop screen with a flourish.
It was titled "Li Group CEO questioned by police about counterfeit masterpieces scandal."
There was a photo of Li Zhen standing outside a police station, looking smug as he talked to reporters. My stomach dropped when I saw it.
"He's been under investigation for months," Wang Jing said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" I asked, feeling a mix of betrayal and fear.
"I didn't know you'd get involved with him," she replied, her eyes filled with regret.
