That was the day she broke my heart.
Delaney and I were happily married.
We loved each other so much.
We were living our best life together.
Until that day, she left me for good and never wanted to see my face again.
It's clear that she didn't say that by herself.
Her dad forced her to do so, so she would marry another man.
Marcus Black is my sworn enemy.
He's a rich man; he's only a few steps away from becoming a billionaire.
My wife left me to become Mrs. Black.
I just can't believe it!
I thought we were doing great.
I really did, but that day I realized that I meant nothing to her.
The only woman I have ever loved for my entire life became my sworn enemy overnight.
I just can't believe it!
I still can't believe what she told me that day...
"It's over, Alex. Don't ever contact me again. I don't want to see your face," she said, her voice trembling as tears filled her eyes.
I stared at her in disbelief, my heart racing as I tried to process what she was telling me.
"Delaney, what are you talking about? We're fine, aren't we?"
I asked, confusion etched on my face.
She turned away from me, and I knew then that something was terribly wrong.
What had happened between last night and this morning?
When we went to bed last night, everything was perfect.
The CEO's Revenge
I paced outside Marcus's downtown office building, my hands shaking as I checked my watch for what felt like the hundredth time.
I watched through the glass doors as he emerged from the lobby, heading toward the exit.
Perfect timing.
As he stepped out onto the sidewalk, I moved directly into his path, blocking his way to the waiting car.
He looked up at me, a smug expression spreading across his face.
"What do you want, Thompson?" he sneered, adjusting his tie as he eyed me with contempt.
Two security guards hurried over to flank him, but he waved them off.
"Let's talk," he said, leaning in close to me as his expensive cologne wafted into my nostrils and made my stomach turn.
I grabbed a handful of his lapel, crumpling the fine fabric in my fist.
"What did you do to her?"
The CEO's Revenge
Marcus chuckled, a cold, dismissive sound that grated on my nerves.
"Nothing she didn't agree to herself," he replied, his eyes glinting with malice.
"You're lying," I shot back, my voice barely concealing the desperation I felt.
I released my grip on his suit, my fingers cramping as I realized how tightly I'd been holding on.
The fabric was wrinkled where my fist had been.
"Take me to Delaney. Now," I demanded, my voice hoarse but steady.
Marcus straightened his jacket, that infuriating smirk still plastered on his face.
He pulled out his phone and tapped the screen a few times before holding it up to show me the security footage of Delaney entering his penthouse earlier.
The CEO's Revenge
"She's waiting for me there," he said, "but you're not invited."
I clenched my jaw so hard that my teeth hurt.
Marcus turned and walked away, and I trailed behind him as he made his way to his penthouse building a few blocks away.
My hands still shook from our confrontation, but I kept them balled into fists at my sides.
Through the lobby windows, I watched as he swaggered over to the private elevator that led to his penthouse on the top floor.
He adjusted his wrinkled suit jacket before pressing the call button.
I paced outside, my eyes darting between every window of the building, hoping to catch a glimpse of Delaney.
The security guard from earlier eyed me suspiciously, but Marcus's car was parked out front, so I must have been deemed a safe enough threat.
Finally, a light flicked on at the top of the building.
I imagined Delaney up there with Marcus, maybe sitting on his leather couch or standing in front of his floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
My stomach twisted with nausea at the thought.
I pulled out my phone and typed out a message to Marcus, then immediately deleted it.
The CEO's Revenge
I couldn't just stand there, so I dialed Delaney's number, hoping she'd pick up.
To my surprise, she answered on the first ring, her voice barely a whisper.
"Alex, you shouldn't have come," she said, a hint of fear lacing her words.
I leaned against the cold brick wall of the building, pressing my phone to my ear as if I could somehow pull her closer.
I heard rustling on the line, followed by a sharp intake of breath.
"Alex, please," she whispered, her voice cracking.
"You don't understand what's happening."
I watched the windows of the penthouse, waiting for some sign of movement.
A shadow passed behind the curtains, and then Marcus's silhouette appeared in front of them.
My free hand balled into a fist at my side as I took in his smug expression.
Through the phone, I heard his muffled voice calling Delaney's name.
She gasped softly.
"I have to go," she said quickly, her voice strained.
