Evelyn Carter
started as a receptionist and worked her way up, The potential romantic interest of the female CEO, has deep blue eyes and a warm smile, known for her attention to detail and empathetic nature.
I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I fell in love with Sarah Jennings.
It wasn’t as if she was a puzzle and one day she gave me the final piece, making me see her in an entirely new light.
It was more like I was reading a book and at some point, without realizing it, I’d become interested in one of the secondary characters.
The character was so subtle and well-written that I didn’t even notice when my interest began.
It happened overtime, so overtime that when I finally realized it, it seemed so obvious.
I wondered how I could have been so blind.
Sarah started working for me as a receptionist right out of high school.
She was the daughter of our janitor and had just gotten a voluntary certificate in office administration.
At the time, I thought it was a nice favor to the family.
I didn’t realize until much later that it would actually be a actually benefit to me.
She was meticulous and had a keen eye for detail.
Before long, she was handling tasks way beyond those of a receptionist.
Within two years, she had become my executive assistant.
It wasn’t until after we had worked together for several years that I began to realize my feelings for her.
It started with little things.
One evening, after everyone else had left the office, I found myself lingering at my desk.
I was watching Sarah through the glass wall of her office.
She was typing away on her computer, occasionally tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear.
I scribbled a note on a small piece of paper.
My handwriting was unusually neat and precise.
"Thank you for always being there."
I slipped it onto her desk before leaving for the night.
The next morning, I watched from my office as she discovered it.
Her eyes widened slightly and a soft smile played on her lips.
"Did you mean what you wrote in the note?" Sarah asked, her voice barely above a whisper as she stood in my doorway.
I hesitated for a moment, then nodded, "Every word, Sarah."
She stepped inside, closing the door behind her, and said, "Then there's something I need to tell you too."
My eyes locked onto hers, never once wavering.
She took a deep breath and continued, "I didn’t want to tell you this, but I have no choice. I did something terrible, Alice."
Her voice was steady, but her hands were shaking slightly.
"I know you’re going to be mad at me, but please just hear me out."
I nodded again, not wanting to interrupt her.
She took another deep breath before continuing.
"I’m the one who has been siphoning funds from the company. I know it was wrong, but I was desperate. My mom’s medical bills are piling up and my dad’s salary isn’t enough to cover them."
I could feel a chill run down my spine as she spoke.
It wasn’t until that moment that I realized how much she meant to me.
"I need your help to cover it up," she said, her voice filled with determination.
I glanced over at the closed office door, making sure we were still alone.
Then, leaning forward in my chair, I whispered back to her, "We’ll figure something out. But first, we need a plan."
We spent the next several hours huddled over spreadsheets and financial documents.
Sarah explained where she had been taking the money from and how she had been covering her tracks.
I listened intently, taking mental notes as she spoke.
Once I had a good understanding of the situation, we began brainstorming ways to fix it. It wasn’t going to be easy.
The missing funds were already starting to cause problems for the company.
But Sarah and I worked well together and eventually we came up with a plan.
We would create a fake emergency expense and use that money to pay off Sarah’s mother’s medical bills.
Then, over time, we would slowly pay back the money that had been taken from the company.
It wouldn’t be easy, but it was the only way to keep Sarah from getting in trouble.
As the sun began to rise outside my office window, Sarah stood up from her chair and stretched.
"Thank you for understanding," she said softly.
I nodded and smiled at her before reaching for my phone on my desk.
"I’ll call our accountant and get everything set up. You can go home now."
As she turned to leave, I realized that this was the moment our lives truly became intertwined.
