I am Aiden,
a software engineer at AZSoft.
My company provides all sorts of technological solutions to businesses, helping them grow and reach their full potential.
From communication and digital marketing to cybersecurity and systems monitoring, we cover it all.
I heard the keyboard clacking from my workstation and glanced up to see Emily Parker, one of the other software engineers I worked with.
"Hey, Aiden," she said, giving me a little wave.
"Hi."
I returned the wave and waited for her to say what she was there for.
Emily didn’t just visit people’s workstations for no reason, especially not mine.
It had been a few months since we last worked together, and things hadn’t gone so well.
I’d been looking forward to working with her again.
Despite our issues in the past, I recognized her talent, and she was a big part of why we’d been able to land the new client.
"What’s up?"
I prompted her when she didn’t say anything else.
"Oh, sorry."
She shook herself and looked around at the other workstations.

The office was bustling with people, but no one was paying us any attention.
Still, Emily hesitated before meeting my eyes again.
"I wanted to discuss the new client’s project," she said, her voice steady.
I nodded, not wanting to dwell on our past misunderstandings.
"Let’s go over the requirements together."
I stood and gestured towards the empty conference room across from us.
"Sounds good."
Emily followed me into the conference room, and we both set our laptops and notes down on the table.
Once we were settled in, Emily’s entire focus shifted to the task at hand.
She didn’t even glance at me as she started outlining the client’s needs and what they were looking for in a software solution.
Her dedication was a reminder that our shared goal was bigger than any past discord.

As she spoke, I typed out notes on my laptop.
The client was looking for a program that could analyze their customers’ buying habits and suggest new products based on their purchases.
It was a pretty standard request, but it required a lot of data analysis.
"Okay," Emily said, "so we’ve got the requirements. What’s your approach?"
I leaned back in my chair and considered her question.
"I was thinking we could use a machine learning algorithm to analyze the customer data."
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
"That sounds overly complicated."
"It’s not," I argued.
"It’s actually pretty straightforward. We just need to input the data and then let the algorithm do its thing."
Emily shook her head.
"I don’t think that’s going to work."
The CEO's Assistant
"Why not?"
I asked, feeling defensive.
"Because machine learning algorithms are notoriously finicky," she said.
"They require a lot of data and can be difficult to train. And even if we do manage to get it working, there’s no guarantee it will actually be effective."
I sighed.
"I understand your concerns, but I still think it’s worth a shot. And if it doesn’t work out, we can always try something else."
Emily nodded reluctantly.
"Okay, let’s give it a try."
We spent the next few hours working on the algorithm, typing away at our laptops and occasionally stopping to discuss our progress.
Despite our initial disagreements, we worked well together, and I found myself enjoying her company. As the day wore on, Emily began to open up more.
She told me about her weekend and shared some funny stories about her family.
I found myself laughing along with her, feeling like we were finally connecting on a personal level.
As the sun began to set outside the conference room window, Emily glanced at her watch and stood up abruptly.
"I should get going," she said quickly.
"I have plans tonight."
I nodded understandingly as she gathered her things and rushed out of the conference room.
I watched her go, feeling a pang of disappointment that our time together had come to an end so soon.
But as I packed up my own things and headed back to my workstation, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the unexpected turn of events that had brought us together again.
Even though we’d started off on shaky ground, our collaboration had turned out to be surprisingly smooth and enjoyable. As I sat down at my workstation, I noticed Jason standing nearby with his arms crossed over his chest.
He looked at me expectantly as I opened up my laptop again.
"Did you two finally sort things out?" Jason asked, a smirk playing on his lips.
I shrugged, trying to play it cool.
"We're getting there, but there's something about this project that feels off," I admitted, glancing back at the empty conference room.
