Gregory
"Love?"
Ringer asked.
"You know I don’t—"
I cut off what was surely going to be a protest from my beloved when his phone rang.
Again.
For the twelfth time that night.
If it rang while I was speaking, I just ignored it.
If he answered it, I pouted.
He had no idea how sexy he looked with his head made from the most exquisite confectionery, phone held up to his ear as he listened to whoever it was that wouldn’t leave him the hell alone.
I didn’t care who was on the other end of that damned device, he shouldn’t have been answering it after dark.
That was our time.
But no, every night since we’d brought the kids home, he was in demand once again.
Before, it had been so easy to just ignore it and spend my evenings wrapped around my man, listening to the sound of his heartbeat.
Now I was beginning to think that had all been a dream.
A very pleasant dream from which I seemed destined to be awakened.
Ringer sighed and hit mute on his phone before turning back to me.
"What were you saying?"
I shook my head and gave him what I hoped was my most dazzling smile.
"Love."
His eyes widened as they should when faced with all my glistening white sharpness.

His gaze darted to the phone, which was still buzzing.
Taffy giggled and clapped his hands, while Pepper sat with her arms crossed, glaring at Ringer.
I took a deep breath and reached for my crown.
It was time to remind everyone who was king of this sugary realm.
"No more interruptions," I said, snatching the phone from Ringer’s hand and tossing it onto the pile of marshmallow pillows.
Ringer blinked, his confectionery head tilting slightly.
"This is our time."
The phone fell silent, and for the first time that night, so did we.
I sat back, savoring the quiet that enveloped us.
Taffy crawled onto my lap, his eyes wide with curiosity.
"Gregory, how are candy kings made?"
He asked, his voice innocent yet probing.
I chuckled and ruffled his hair.
"Well, it’s a sweet story."
I glanced at Ringer, who nodded encouragingly.
Pepper rolled her eyes but stayed close, her usual scowl softening.
"As you know, we’re not born. We’re made from sugar and spice and everything nice."
Taffy giggled and looked at Butterscotch, who was sleeping beside us.
The big cave rock candy worm was curled up in a ball, his sugary fur fluffed out to keep him warm.
"But how do you make them?"
The Candy Demon's Sweet Family
Pepper asked, her voice softer than I’d ever heard it.
She was a tough cookie, but she had a soft spot for her little brother.
"Well," I said, "it starts with a recipe. A special one passed down through generations of candy makers. It’s a secret recipe that only the royal family knows."
Pepper leaned forward, her eyes wide with excitement.
"What’s in it?"
I smiled and leaned forward so that only she could hear me.
"It’s got sugar and cream and butter—"
"Ooh! And chocolate!"
Taffy interrupted.
I winked at him.
"And chocolate. But there’s something else. Something special."
"What is it?"
Taffy asked, his voice full of wonder.
I smiled again, this time at Ringer.
"Love," I said softly.
"Love is the most important ingredient of all."
Ringer smiled back at me, his confectionery head tilting slightly as he reached for my hand.
Taffy giggled again and hugged my neck tightly.
"I love you too," he said, his voice muffled against my chest.
"And I love you," I replied, hugging him back tightly. Pepper rolled her eyes again, but she was smiling too.
She leaned forward and kissed my cheek softly before snuggling up against Ringer’s side.
The four of us sat there for a moment, enjoying the warmth of our little family.
Then Taffy looked up at me again, his eyes shining with excitement.
"Gregory," he said softly, "can you tell us more about how candy kings are made?"
I smiled and settled back into the pillows again.
"Well," I said slowly, "after the recipe is mixed together—"
"Tomorrow," I promised, as the sweetness of our world wrapped us in its embrace.
