I take a deep breath and let it out slowly.
I can’t believe I’m in this situation.
I look over at Andy, who is sitting on the couch and staring at her book.
She looks up at me and our eyes meet for a second before she quickly looks away.
I want to talk to her, but I don’t know where to start.
She’s been acting weird around me since we got here, and I don’t know why.
We’re in a cabin in the mountains for a camping trip, just the two of us, along with Zoey the dog.
I thought this would be a good way for us to get to know each other, but so far, it hasn’t been very successful.
I want to break down the wall that’s between us, but I don’t know how.
"Hey Andy," I say, taking a seat next to her on the couch.
She looks up at me warily, and I try to put on my most charming smile.
It seems to work because she gives me a small smile in return.
"What’s up?"
She asks, putting her book down on her lap.
Just talking to her makes me feel like I’m trying to get into Fort Knox.
It’s frustrating because we’re stuck together in this cabin for who knows how long.
"Why are you acting so weird around me?"
I ask her directly.
She looks taken aback by my question and I realize that maybe I should have approached the situation differently.
"I’m not acting weird, I’m just a little uncomfortable," she says quietly.
I can tell by the way she’s shifting in her seat that I’m right.
Zoey notices too and nudges my leg with her nose.
I reach down to pet her and my eyes fall on the strange pillow that’s sitting at the end of the couch.
I remember buying this pillow at a quirky little shop in town.
The owner told me it was a magic pillow that granted wishes, but I had no idea if he was serious or not.
Since I’ve never been the type to believe in superstitions, I bought the pillow as a novelty and forgot about it until we got here.
But now, I’m curious if it really does work, so I pick it up and hold it tightly against my chest.
"Zoey, watch closely," I say to her and she tilts her head to the side. "I wish to become invisible," I say with a straight face and concentrate on becoming invisible.
The room is quiet for a second before Andy speaks.
"Max?"
She turns around and looks at the spot where I was just sitting.
Her eyes go wide when she realizes I’m not there anymore and she looks around frantically.
"Max, is this some kind of trick?"
She asks, confused.
I sit there, holding onto the pillow with all my might, not wanting to break the illusion that I’ve created for her.
Andy looks out the window, then around the room again, seemingly confused as to where I went.
She gets off the couch and walks around the room, looking at every corner and behind things like I might be hiding there.
I watch as she goes into the bedroom and comes back out into the living room again when she doesn’t find me. Zoey lets out a bark at where I was just sitting and breaks me out of my thoughts.
I look down at her and chuckle to myself before putting the pillow down on the couch.
When Andy comes back in the room again, she jumps when she sees me sitting on the couch looking at her.
"How did you do that?" she asks, her voice a mix of awe and suspicion.
"I guess the pillow really is magic," I reply with a grin, trying to lighten the mood.
Andy shakes her head slowly, "Max, there's something I need to tell you about that pillow."
I sit back on the couch and clutch the pillow in my hands.
Andy looks serious and Zoey lies at my feet, her tail thumping against the floor.
Andy starts pacing around the room, glancing at me every once in a while with a look of concern mixed with curiosity.
"Max, this isn’t just a joke," she says, her voice steady and serious.
I shrug my shoulders, not wanting to make a big deal out of it.
"It’s just a pillow Andy, it’s not going to do anything."
She stops pacing and kneels down next to Zoey, stroking her fur absentmindedly.
"There’s something about this place," she murmurs.
I toss the pillow aside and get up off the couch.
"What do you mean, something about this place?" I ask, feeling a strange chill run down my spine.
Andy looks up at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and determination. "This cabin has a history, Max, and that pillow is part of it."
I frown, trying to process what she’s saying. "What kind of history are we talking about here?"
