I was in downward-facing dog when I heard the knock at my door.
It was probably Jax and Dixie, my two favorite people in the world.
I had invited them over for a morning yoga session.
I never had other people over for yoga, but I was feeling extra lonely today.
I called out, "Come in!" and waited for them to hear me and let themselves in.
But when I heard the knock again, I realized it wasn’t my two favorite people at all.
It was probably my neighbor, Lila.
I had seen her around, living in the cabin next to mine, but we hadn’t spoken much yet.
I was curious about her, though.
I wondered what kind of person would choose to live out here in the woods all alone, just like me.
"Come in," I called out, not wanting to leave my pose.
I heard the door open and close and then the sound of her walking across my floor.
She rounded the corner and saw me there on my mat.
"Hi," she said.
"Hi."
I smiled up at her and waved, not wanting to break my concentration.
She stood there for a moment watching me.
It was a bit awkward, so I finally said, "Would you like to join me? There’s another mat right there."
She looked at the mat next to mine and shook her head.
"No thanks. That’s very kind of you."
She stood there for another second looking at me.
The Cabin Crush
I shifted out of downward dog and sat cross-legged on my mat.
I studied her face, trying to figure out what she wanted.
She was a pretty girl.
Her hair was long and dark brown, and she had a smattering of freckles across her nose.
She was tall and slender but athletic, with toned legs that were probably from hiking or biking.
"I’m Lila," she said, holding out her hand for me to shake.
"Hi Lila," I said, shaking her hand.
"I’m Rowan."
"Rowan," she repeated, like she was tasting the word in her mouth.
"That’s a pretty name."
The Cabin Crush
"Thanks," I said.
"So what can I do for you?"
"I just wanted to say hello," she said.
"I noticed you moved in next door and I thought it would be nice to introduce myself."
"Oh. Well thank you."
I felt a bit awkward sitting on my mat while she stood there towering over me, so I stood up and folded it under my arm.
"I’m actually just finishing up here. Would you like some tea?"
She smiled at me and said, "I’d love some."
I walked into the kitchen and started the kettle boiling.
Lila sat down at the table and watched me move around the kitchen.
When I turned to look at her, I caught her staring at my feet.
"What?" she asked when she realized I was looking at her.
"Nothing. I just…"
I didn’t know how to finish that sentence without sounding rude. "You have really nice feet," she said.
"Thanks."
I laughed uncomfortably and turned back to the stove.
When the water was boiling, I poured us each a cup of tea and then sat down across from her at the table.
"So," she said as soon as I sat down, "what’s with the toe wrestling?"
My face flushed bright red as soon as she said that word.
How did she know about my toe wrestling?
The Cabin Crush
I had never told anyone about it before.
I stared at her, my hands frozen mid-tea-pour.
She knew about toe wrestling?
My heart started racing as I looked at her sitting across from me, her bare feet visible under the table.
She was wearing a long flowing skirt, but I could see her toes wiggling as she moved them around on the wooden floor.
I set the kettle down and pulled my own feet up onto my chair so I could examine them.
"How did you know?"
I asked.
She smiled at me and said, "I’ve seen you practicing through your window."
I felt like I had been caught doing something naughty, but at the same time, I was intrigued that someone else knew about toe wrestling.
"The way you flex your toes while doing yoga," she continued, "and then the way you curl them up tight when you’re in tree pose. It’s very distinctive."
The Cabin Crush
I didn’t know what to say to that.
I had never even considered that someone might see me practicing through my window.
But now that she mentioned it, it made total sense. "Do you…do you toe wrestle too?"
I asked, feeling like an idiot for even asking such a ridiculous question.
But Lila just smiled again and extended one foot out from under the table toward me.
