Emma
She is a young woman with deep feelings of infatuation. She is patient, compassionate, and selfsacrificing. For years, she has secretly loved Wil,an older man richly blessed with a loving relationship and a fulfilling life. After Wil's wife passes away,Emma seizes the opportunity to express her feelings and visits him, offering comfort in his grief. Despite the risk of rejection, she deeply desires to be with him and help alleviate his pain.
Wil
He is a grieving widower in his midfifties. He is gentle, sorrowful, and vulnerable. Wil has just lost his loving wife,Anna, and is struggling to come to terms with his new reality. He is drawn to Emma's kindness and compassion as she visits him during this difficult time. Despite the age difference and his grief,he finds solace in Emma's presence. Her caring nature helps him begin to heal and opens him up to new possibilities.
I was 23 years old and had been in love with Wil for a long time.
Wil was 56 years old and had been in a loving relationship with his wife, Anna, for thirty years.
I knew I had no chance with him because he was already taken, and even if he wasn't, our age difference was too great.
I could only look at him from afar and be content with that.
But life was funny sometimes.
One day, Wil lost his wife, Anna.
I finally got a chance to be with him.
But I wasn't planning on taking advantage of him because he was grieving.
No, that was not my intention at all.
My intention was to comfort him and let him know that he wasn't alone.
I would do that by being his friend first.
Then, maybe, just maybe, he would see me in a different light.
So, I went to his house and knocked on the door.
After a few seconds, he opened the door and looked at me.
"Hello, Wil," I said softly.
"Hello, Emma," he replied in his gentle voice.
"I'm so sorry to hear about your wife," I said as I looked into his eyes.
"It's okay," he said as he looked down at his feet.
He didn't seem to be okay at all.
"I was just checking up on you," I said as I stood there, waiting for him to say something else.
He didn't.
He just stood there with his hand gripping the doorframe.
His eyes were red and swollen, like he had been crying all day.
The house behind him was dark and quiet.
After a few moments of silence, he finally stepped back and created enough space for me to come in.
I walked in and followed him into his living room.
There were unwashed dishes in the sink and unopened mail on the kitchen counter.
He sat down in his armchair, and I sat down on the couch across from him.
I kept a safe distance between us because I didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable.
I start tidying up around him.
I pick up the dirty dishes and put them in the sink.
Then, I sort the mail into neat piles.
He watches me from his chair, his shoulders slumped forward.
When I bend down to pick up a fallen photo of Anna, he speaks for the first time.
"Leave it," he says quietly.
I straighten up and step back, apologizing.
But he stands up and walks to the kitchen counter where I've been working.
He picks up a dish towel and joins me at the sink.
We wash dishes together in silence, our elbows occasionally touching as we work.
When I hand him the last plate, our fingers meet.
In that brief touch, I felt the fragile beginning of something new.
