The Bullied Boy Who Became an Economics Genius

Scenario:Raja returns to Moors High Sixth Form with his longtime friends Sanju and Karthik. Known for his intelligence and Oxbridge potential, Raja carries a dark past few know about. Early in the year, he begins a relentless, targeted bullying campaign against Smit, a sensitive and emotional student who had insulted Raja’s background after beating him in a test. Raja’s bullying includes psychological torment, social isolation, sabotage of belongings, and public humiliation, escalating over months. Smit is in a turbulent relationship with Navi, who is fiercely protective of him and makes excuses for his growing insecurities and frustrations caused by Raja’s harassment, culminating in an intense hate for Raja by her. Their relationship is marked by early romance, tender moments, and intimate conversations, but also increasingly frequent arguments fueled by mistrust and pressure. In January, under persistent pressure and emotional coercion by Smit, Navi reluctantly consents to a sexual encounter she is deeply uncomfortable with, an experience that devastates her emotionally. This trauma isolates her further. Around this time, Navi and Raja are assigned a group economics project, which Navi expresses disgust, anger and hate. Tensions rise in each study session, with Navi taking out her anger on Raja. During a tense library study session, Navi suffers a breakdown triggered by a font error on their presentation. Raja unexpectedly comforts her with a hug, revealing a side unknown to most, and changing their relationship dynamic, and she confesses what happened to her. He opens up to her about his past in Royapuram, as Vetri a drug runner for Pulli, his sister Rani who was desired by Tharani, Pulli's brother, and killed her when he was drunk, and his murder of Tharani, and they eventually realise the love between them. Smit and Navi have a messy breakup, and much later, after many rejections by Raja who thinks she is missing the idea of a relationship, Raja and Navi get together. The story culminates in a violent brawl at a school football match. The fight erupts when SK trips Raja’s friend Karthik, Raja retaliates, and Smit intervenes with provocative remarks about Raja’s deceased sister Rani, as well as his SA of Navi. This triggers Vetri’s violent takeover in Raja, nearly leading to Smit’s murder before Raja’s friends Sanju and Karthik restrain him. Pulli, Raja’s former crime lord mentor, watches over, recognising Raja as the boy who killed his brother, while DI Sharma, the sole survivor of Pulli’s massacre of police officers and their families, observes from a distance, recognizing Raja’s violent past.

September 2005
Returning to Moors High Sixth Form with Sanju and Karthik, my longtime friends from primary school, was a welcome relief after the hellish summer I’d just had.
I didn’t want to think about it anymore, and I was glad to leave that part of my life behind.
I threw myself into my studies immediately, but I found it hard to concentrate in class.
My mind kept drifting back to her and what had happened.
I knew I couldn’t let it get the better of me, so I focused all my attention on my schoolwork.
I wanted to get good grades, not just for the sake of passing, but because I wanted to go up to Oxbridge—Cambridge or Oxford.
That was my goal, and I was determined to achieve it.
In order to do that, though, I needed to stay focused and get good grades throughout the year.
The first few weeks were easy enough, but then I started to struggle in one of my subjects.
I was failing miserably.
The teacher wasn’t helping at all, and I needed extra support.
When I asked him for help after class one day, he told me there wasn’t anything he could do and basically dismissed me.
I was furious.
How dare he not want to help me?
Didn’t he care about his students?
I felt myself losing control and wanting to punch him in the face.
The Bullied Boy Who Became an Economics Genius
I slam the door behind me, making the glass rattle in its frame.
The empty corridor stretches before me, and I pace back and forth, my footsteps echoing against the linoleum floor.
My breathing comes in sharp bursts, and I press my forehead against the cold wall, trying to ground myself.
But memories of Royapuram flood my mind—the smell of cheap liquor, Tharani’s sneering face, Rani’s screams.
I can feel my heart pounding in my chest, and my fists clench and unclench at my sides.
Suddenly, the bell rings, startling me.
The hallway fills with students rushing to their next class.
I straighten up and smooth down my uniform, forcing my expression to remain neutral.
Sanju appears beside me, grinning as usual.
"Hey, man. Want to grab some lunch?"
The Bullied Boy Who Became an Economics Genius
I lean against the wall, still trembling with rage.
"Yeah, sure," I reply, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me.
Sanju starts chattering about the cafeteria’s curry, but I barely hear him.
My eyes scan the crowd, searching for a familiar face.
And then I see her—Mrs. Chen, my history teacher, walking purposefully toward us.
Her heels click against the linoleum, and her dark hair is pulled back in a neat bun.
She looks at me with a mixture of concern and curiosity.
"Sanju, could you excuse us for a moment?" she asks, her voice firm but polite.
Sanju nods and disappears into the crowd, leaving me alone with Mrs. Chen.
She turns to me, her expression softening slightly.
The Bullied Boy Who Became an Economics Genius
"I couldn’t help but notice that you’ve been struggling lately," she says gently.
"I’m not sure what’s going on, but I want you to know that I’m here to help."
I feel a surge of embarrassment and guilt wash over me.
How did she know?
I hadn’t even realized it myself until now.
"I’m sorry," I mumble, looking down at my feet.
"It’s just been a tough time lately."
Mrs. Chen places a hand on my shoulder and gives it a gentle squeeze.
"I understand," she says softly.
"We all go through ups and downs. But I want you to know that you’re not alone. If you ever need to talk or just need someone to listen, I’m here for you." I nod gratefully, feeling a lump form in my throat.
"Thank you," I whisper.
Mrs. Chen smiles warmly at me before turning to leave.
But then she stops and turns back around.
"Oh, one more thing," she says casually.
"I wanted to talk to you about your grades. You’ve been doing really well in my class this term."
I look up at her in surprise.
"Really?"
I ask incredulously.
"Yes," she replies with a smile.
"You have so much potential. And I think you should consider applying to Oxbridge."
My heart skips a beat at the mention of Oxbridge.
It’s always been my dream to attend one of those prestigious universities, but I never thought it was possible for someone like me from Moors High Sixth Form College in Bradford.
"Oxbridge?" I repeat in disbelief.
"Yes," Mrs. Chen replies matter-of-factly.
"You have the grades and the talent. And there are programs available that can help make it happen."
The Bullied Boy Who Became an Economics Genius
I swallow hard, trying to process what she’s saying.
"But... I thought it was just a dream," I admit, my voice barely above a whisper.
Mrs. Chen nods, her eyes filled with encouragement.
"Dreams are meant to be chased, not shelved away. You’ve got what it takes, and I’ll help you every step of the way if you’re willing to try."
