"I, um, I think you should go now," I stuttered, and he nods slowly.
"I know it’s a lot to take in. I’m not expecting an answer tonight. I just…"
He pauses, and his eyes lock onto mine.
"I couldn’t keep it inside anymore. I had to let you know how I feel."
My heart is pounding so hard, it might just burst out of my chest.
I can feel it throbbing in my wrists and neck as I watch him turn toward the door.
He knows Caleb will never approve of this.
It’s why Noah has been so patient with me all these years.
Why he never pushed for more than friendship.
He knows my brother, my Caleb, will always see him as his best friend and my little sister Skye.
Never as a potential love interest for me.
"Wait," I say, stopping him from leaving, and he turns back around.
"Yeah?"I swallow hard.
"I…"
I don’t know what to say.
I want him to stay, but I also don’t want to ruin our friendship in case this doesn’t work out.
Not that I think it won’t work out.
I’ve been in love with Noah for just as long as he’s been pining for me.
The Brother I Never Knew
I take a step toward him, my fingers fidgeting with the hem of my sweater.
The living room suddenly feels smaller, more intimate than it did just minutes before.
Noah’s eyes soften as he looks at me, and I know he knows exactly what I’m thinking.
"Caleb can’t know about this," I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Not yet. If he finds out before we figure this out, it could ruin everything."
Noah nods in understanding, and we both sit down on the couch.
He keeps a safe distance from me, and I don’t blame him.
If Caleb walked in on us cuddling on the couch right now, he would lose his mind.
"So, how do we do this?"
I ask.
The Brother I Never Knew
"Um…"
He runs his hand through his hair and looks over at me.
"I’m not sure. I mean…"
He shrugs, and I laugh softly at his adorable expression. "I guess we just see where it goes," I say.
"And we don’t tell Caleb anything until we’re sure about everything."
"Yeah. Sounds like a plan."
He smiles at me, and just as I’m about to lean in and kiss him, headlights sweep across the window behind us.
We both freeze as we hear the sound of Caleb’s truck pulling into the driveway.
"Quick, act normal," I whisper, my heart racing even faster.
Noah nods, shifting back to his usual spot on the couch, trying to look casual.
The Brother I Never Knew
"We've got this," he murmurs, just as the front door swings open.
My hands tremble as I smooth my shirt, while Noah pretends to be engrossed in his phone.
Caleb bursts through the door, grocery bags in hand, his usual energetic self.
I jump up to help him, deliberately avoiding Noah's gaze.
"Hey sis, Noah," Caleb calls out, heading to the kitchen.
Noah stands awkwardly, announcing he should leave.
As they do their typical bro-handshake goodbye, I notice Aunt Isabella watching from the kitchen window, tending to her herbs.
She catches my eye, and her gentle smile tells me she saw everything.
I quickly glance at Noah, trying to gauge his reaction.
"Did Aunt Isabella see us?" I whisper, my voice tinged with panic.
Noah nods slightly, a reassuring smile playing on his lips.
