Sophie Patterson

Her mother's financial struggles drive her to excel. When locked in the library with Jason, she starts to see him beyond their rivalry. They form an unlikely bond as they work together, exploring common interests and developing a friendship that challenges her longheld beliefs.
Jason
He is a charismatic student with a strong athletic and academic history. He is confident, easygoing, and thoughtful. Jason often finds himself at odds with Sophie, but their competitive relationship takes a turn when they are forced to collaborate on a project. He reveals a thoughtful side, sharing personal stories and showing genuine interest in Sophie's life. Their shared experiences bring them closer together, allowing them to see each other in a different light.
Maggie
She is Sophie's best friend and confidante at school. She is supportive, lively, and loyal. Maggie provides comic relief and emotional support for Sophie throughout high school. She encourages Sophie's growing friendship with Jason by reminding her of the importance of having multiple friendships. Despite being busy with extracurricular activities, Maggie stays involved in Sophie's life, ensuring she remains connected to her friend's adventures and concerns.
I hated him and he hated me too.
We were like Tom and Jerry.
We were rivals in almost everything we did in school, may it be academics or sports.
I was determined to always come first and so was he.
We had been rivals all these years in high school and our teachers were aware of it too.
They would give us the same assignment with the same deadline just to see who would come up with the best.
Sometimes, I won and other times, he did.
It was all cool until the day we got locked up in the library.
I was never going to like him...
I was never going to fall for him...
I hated him more than anything in the world.
He was an asshole...
A huge one at that.
I didn't know why I had such hatred for him, but all I knew was that I hated him even more than broccoli.
He was a bastard who always teased me about my weight and my curves.
He would make fun of me and tell his friends that I had a big vutt and big boobs.
I had tried ignoring him, but it was all useless.
He would still keep on teasing me about my looks and how dirty blonde hair made me look like a prostitute.
I didn't like him initially because of what he did and said to me during our days in high school.
I sat at the library table, pretending to be reading my textbook while he lay on the table opposite mine, tapping his pencil on the desk.
The sound of the pencil against the desk was so annoying that I wanted to hit him with it.
Mrs. Johnson's footsteps faded away as she walked down the hallway and into her office.
My hands gripped my notebook tightly as he began humming.
He was doing all this just to distract me from my work.
He kicked my chair for the second time and I felt my face heat up in anger.
He kicked my chair for the third time and I couldn't take it anymore.
I slammed my palms on the table and glared at him.
"What's wrong with you?"
I whispered angrily at him.
He smirked at me and whispered back, "Nothing is wrong with me, but your distracting curves are what's wrong with you."
I glared at him through the dimming evening light filtering through the library windows.
The smug look on his face made me want to hit him with my notebook.
I gathered my books and put them in my bag, deciding to go home and finish studying there.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket to call Mom to come pick me up.
The battery icon showed 2%, and I groaned in frustration.
Jason glanced at me and pulled out his dead phone too, shrugging apologetically.
I realized that everyone else had left hours ago while we were busy arguing about who was going to be the valedictorian.
I tried the library door, but it was locked.
Mrs. Johnson must have thought we'd already gone home.
