Théo
He is a high school student in a Frenchspeaking province of Canada. He is intelligent, confident, and charismatic. Théo is often the center of attention in class and is wellliked by his peers and teachers. He excels academically, especially in history, which he finds interesting. Despite his popularity,he values his friendship with Tyler and appreciates Emma's help during their election as class representatives. He enjoys spending time with Emma outside of school, going to movies and having conversations about life.
Emma
She is a diligent student in high school, often helping her siblings with their homework. She is intelligent, shy, and diligent. Emma sits next to Théo during class and volunteers to assist him during their election as class representatives. She shares common interests with Théo,like movies and books. Emma enjoys spending time with Théo outside of school, going for walks and having deep conversations. Her quiet nature makes her an unobtrusive yet reliable friend for Théo.
Tyler
He is Théo's best friend and classmate. He is humorous, laidback, and popular. Tyler often plays the clown in class, which earns him a lot of laughter but also disfavors from teachers like Mrs. Laurent. Despite his lack of academic focus,he maintains a strong bond with Théo. He shares a close friendship marked by teasing and mutual support. Tyler enjoys spending time with Théo outside of school, watching movies together, and engaging in conversations about life.
It has already been a month since the beginning of the school year, and today we are in class during Mrs. Laurent’s history lesson, who is also our homeroom teacher.
There won’t be a history lesson today, but rather the election of the class representatives, which means we will choose two students to represent our class for the rest of the school year.
I want to be one of those representatives, but I know it won’t be easy since I am not the only one who wants that position.
Tyler, my best friend and classmate, also wants to be a class representative, but I know I am way more popular than him among our classmates.
The only problem is that he is against me being one of the representatives.
When I told him I wanted to be a class representative, he laughed at me and told me there was no way I would get enough votes to become one of them.
"So, are you going to vote for me or not?"
I asked him during recess.
"Are you kidding me? No way!"
He grinned at me.
"But why not? I would make a great class representative!"
I frowned at him.
"You don’t think so?"
"Nope."
He shrugged.
"I am going to be one of them. You can just forget about becoming a class rep."
"Whatever," he said, rolling his eyes at me.
I stood up from the bench we were sitting on, which was our usual spot during lunch and recess.
"Let’s settle this properly then."
"What do you mean?"
He looked at me with a frown.
"We will both present our case to the class before the vote. We will each get five minutes to give a speech, and then everyone can ask us questions."
He scoffed at me.
"You think you can beat me in a debate? No way!"
"Then you have nothing to worry about," I said with a shrug.
He thought about it for a moment before he grinned at me.
"Fine. Let’s do this."
We went back to class, and when Mrs. Laurent asked us if we had any suggestions for how to choose the class representatives, Tyler and I told her about our idea of having a debate before the vote.
To my surprise, she liked the idea and told us that we could start right away. I took out my notebook and started writing down some notes for my speech while Tyler sat in his seat, practicing his gestures in front of an imaginary audience.
The students who were sitting near him couldn’t help but snicker at his performance.
When Emma noticed that I was preparing for my speech, she slid a folded note across the desk to me.
I unfolded it and read it.
It said: "Do you want me to help you structure your arguments?"
I looked up at her and nodded with a grateful smile on my face.
"Thanks, Emma," I whispered, leaning closer.
She smiled back, "No problem. Just remember to focus on what you can do for the class, not just why you want it."
Tyler glanced over, catching our exchange, and smirked, "Getting help already? This is going to be easier than I thought."
I review my notes one final time while Mrs. Laurent calls the class to order.
Emma gives me an encouraging nod as she gets up from her seat and starts arranging the chairs in a semicircle facing the front of the classroom.
Tyler continues making exaggerated gestures from his seat, causing a group of students to snicker.
Mrs. Laurent writes our names on the board and explains the rules of the debate.
"We will each have five minutes to give our speech, and then you can ask us three questions each."
She flips a coin to see who will speak first.
"Tyler wins," she announces, "He will speak first."
Tyler winks at me as he gets up from his seat and walks past my desk on his way to the front of the classroom, high-fiving several classmates along the way.
