I like to go to the Boytaurs Museum by myself sometimes, but I also like to go with my friends.
It’s one of the coolest features of our all-male men’s college, which is why I find myself there about every other week.
Today, I’m going with Ethan Thorne, my best buddy, and his girlfriend, Lily Harper.
Ethan and I share a fascination with the boytaurs—their beauty, their symbolism, everything about them.
Ethan’s not as obsessed as I am, but he likes them a lot too.
And Lily, being the open-minded girl she is, claims to enjoy watching me get excited about the boytaurs.
I think she’s teasing, but the fact she agrees to come here with us from time to time suggests she doesn’t mind indulging my interests.
The Boytaurs Museum at our all-male men’s college boasts the world’s most comprehensive collection of statuary depicting boytaurs, which are mythical beings that appear as young men but have a frontal as well as a hind pair of human legs.
The hind legs extend from the boytaur’s back, connecting at the spine, which arches rearward so the front and hind legs will be connected properly.
The front and hind legs are identical pairs of handsome human legs.
Ethan and I stand before a statue of a boytaur, its four legs poised as if it’s about to leap.
Lily stands off to the side, watching us with an amused expression.
I gesture to the statue’s hind legs.
"See how they’re arched? See how they connect to the front legs at the spine?"
Ethan nods.
"I see."
"And see how the boytaur is poised as if it’s about to leap? See how all four of its legs are ready to spring?"
"Yes," Ethan says.
I gesture again to the boytaur’s hind legs.
"See how beautiful they are? See how perfect they are?"
"When a boytaur is running or playing or just hanging out, it does so on all four of his human legs. That’s its natural stance."
I turn back to the statue and gesture again to its hind legs.
Lily steps forward, her eyes flicking between us with a knowing smile.
"You guys ever wonder why they have both sets of legs?" she asks, tilting her head.
Ethan raises an eyebrow, "You mean there's a reason beyond just looking cool?"
Lily shrugs.
"I don’t know. I just wondered if you guys ever thought about it."
Ethan and I exchange a glance, then we both look back at the statue.
I think about it for a moment, then I say, "I never thought about it. I mean, I always just figured it was part of their nature."
Ethan nods in agreement.
"Yeah, I never thought about it either. But now that Lily’s brought it up, I wonder what the point is."
Lily smiles.
"See? That’s why I’m here. To make you guys think."
I grin and clap her on the shoulder.
"Good job."
Ethan and I move to another statue, this one depicting a boytaur sitting cross-legged on a rock.
The statue is intricately detailed, with lines etched into the boytaur’s spine where his hind legs connect.
I run my finger along the lines, studying them closely.
Each curve appears intentional, as if they’re telling a story.
Ethan leans in to study them with me.
"Maybe it’s about balance," he says.
Lily steps up behind us and looks over our shoulders at the statue’s face.
"Maybe."
I straighten and look at Ethan.
"Or maybe it's about understanding what makes us whole."
