I didn’t know what a "boytaur" was, so I looked it up in my dictionary.
But it wasn’t in there.
So I asked my roommate, Alex Chen, the one I was secretly in love with.
"What’s a boytaur?"
He looked up from his book and gave me an odd look.
"Half-boy, half-centaur. Why?"
I shrugged.
"Just wondered."
I had a vague idea what a centaur was—half-human, half-horse—but I’d never heard of a "boytaur" before.
Then I realized why it had come up.
"It was in that comic I’m reading."
I didn’t want to admit that it had been mentioned in one of the slashfic stories I was reading.
I wasn’t quite ready to come out to my roommate as a fan of male/male erotica, even if it was all just fantasy.
But it had made me wonder: if there were half-human, half-horse creatures, what would a half-boy, half-horse be like?
Would he have wings?
Would he be beautiful, or monstrous?
Alex shrugged.
"I don’t know. It’s not a real word."
Then he went back to his book, and I went back to my comic.
But I couldn’t help thinking about it.
What would a boytaur be like?
I sat at my desk, laptop open, and typed "boytaur origins" into the search bar.
The screen filled with images and articles.
Some of them showed a boytaur as a mythical creature, like a centaur but with a boy’s body instead of a man’s.
Some were fan art from comics or anime.
I clicked on a forum thread that looked like it might have some information.
It was a discussion of the lore behind boytaurs, and how they had evolved over time.
Some people thought they were an ancient myth, while others thought they were purely modern creations.
There were several posts about how boytaurs had been depicted in various cultures.
In some, they were seen as magical creatures, able to heal and bring good fortune.
In others, they were seen as monsters, feared and avoided.
I scrolled through the posts, jotting down notes on a pad of paper.
It was interesting to see how different people had such different ideas about what a boytaur was. Alex walked by and glanced at my screen, but he didn’t say anything.
I kept reading, determined to learn more about this strange creature I’d stumbled across.
One article caught my eye in particular.
It was titled "The Boytaur: A Study in Mythology."
It looked like it might have some real information on the history of the concept, so I bookmarked it to read later.
"Why are you so interested in boytaurs all of a sudden?" Alex asked, leaning against the doorframe with a curious smile.
I hesitated, then decided to take a chance. "I think I might be one," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper.
Alex's eyes widened in surprise, his book forgotten. "Wait, are you serious?"
I nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation.
Alex's expression softened, and he walked over to sit on the edge of my bed.
"You are so stupid," he said, but there was no malice in his voice.
It was the teasing tone he used when we were joking around.
I relaxed a little, realizing that he wasn't going to laugh at me or tell anyone else about my confession.
"Seriously, what makes you think you're a boytaur?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
I shrugged, feeling a little self-conscious.
"I don't know. I just feel like it."
Alex leaned back against the wall, his gaze fixed on me.
"You know what a boytaur is, right?"
I shook my head, feeling a little silly for not having done my research before making such a bold claim.
"It's a mythical creature," Alex explained, his voice filled with amusement.
"It's like a centaur, but instead of having a horse's body, it has four human legs and feet."
I laughed, feeling a bit foolish for not having known that already.
"Of course," I said, rolling my eyes at myself.
Alex chuckled and nudged me playfully with his foot.
"So why do you think you're a boytaur?" he asked again, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. I shrugged, feeling a little shy about sharing my thoughts with him.
"I just feel like it fits," I said softly.
Alex nodded thoughtfully, his gaze still fixed on me.
"I can see that," he said finally.
"You've always been different from the other girls."
I smiled at that, feeling grateful for his understanding.
"Thanks," I said softly.
Alex stood up and stretched, his movements fluid and athletic.
"I'm going to get some water," he said as he headed for the door.
"Do you want any?"
I nodded, and he disappeared into the hallway.
A few minutes later, he returned with two bottles of water in hand.
He handed one to me and sat down on the edge of my bed again.
"Thanks," I said as I took a sip from my bottle.
Alex smiled and nodded before taking a drink from his own bottle.
We sat there in comfortable silence for a moment, enjoying each other's company. Alex glanced at me sideways as I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my laptop screen with an intent expression.
