I was still trying to wrap my head around all of this.
"Okay, I think I need a little more explanation here," I said.
"I can't give you one."
"You can't, or you won't?"
"I won't."
I stared at him, unsure what to say.
"Let's get started," Nate said, opening the door and gesturing for me to follow him.
I did, even though I had no idea where I was going or what was going to happen when I got there.
"So…you're not a doctor, then?"
I asked.
"No."
He stopped in front of a door and turned around.
"But Dr. Rothman will be in later. He's the love doctor."
"The love doctor?"
I repeated, confusion etched on my face.
"Yeah. Well…that's what everyone calls him. Not officially, of course. But he likes the term. It's…accurate."
Nate smiled slightly and opened the door.
"Come on."
I hesitated for a second before stepping inside.
The room was large and square with white walls and floors.
There were five beds in the room, all with white sheets and pillows.
There were five men in the room as well.
Each one of them was wearing the exact same outfit: black scrubs with a white shirt underneath.
Each one had the same short hair cut, too.
They were different heights and weights, but they had similar facial features.
The Boyfriend Experiment
I followed Nate to one of the empty beds, my footsteps echoing in the room.
The other men didn't even look up.
They just kept doing what they were doing: checking monitors and adjusting equipment.
Nate gestured for me to sit on the bed, and I did.
He walked over to a counter and grabbed a tablet, then came back to me.
He tapped the screen a few times until my file came up, then he sat down on a stool next to the bed.
"Okay," he said, looking at me.
"So…let's start with the basics. What's your name?"
"Emily," I said.
"Age?"
The Boyfriend Experiment
"Twenty-two."
"Any medical conditions?"
"No."
"When was your last menstrual cycle?"
I hesitated for a second before answering.
Nate nodded and marked something on his tablet.
The other men were still busy doing their jobs, but every once in a while one of them would glance over at us. They seemed to be moving in sync with each other, like they were performing some sort of choreographed dance.
It was kind of creepy.
I tried not to stare at them, but it was hard not to notice how perfectly synchronized their movements were.
It was like they had practiced this routine thousands of times before.
"So…do you have any allergies?" he asked, looking up from his tablet.
"No."
"Any previous surgeries?"
"No."
Nate nodded again and made another note on his tablet.
One of the other men stopped what he was doing and turned around to look at me.
He stared at me intently, like he was trying to read my mind or something.
"Why is he looking at me like that?" I asked, feeling a bit unnerved.
Nate glanced at the man and then back at me.
The Boyfriend Experiment
"He's just checking if you're compatible with the program," Nate said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
I shifted uncomfortably on the bed.
The other men had stopped what they were doing and were now watching us.
"So…what exactly is this program?"
I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
Nate didn't respond.
He just kept typing on his tablet.
The other men went back to their tasks, but I could feel their eyes on me.
"Um…hello?"
I said, trying to get Nate's attention.
He finally looked up at me, a hint of a smile on his face.
The Boyfriend Experiment
"I'm sorry," he said.
"I got distracted. What were you asking?"
"What exactly is this program?"
I repeated, feeling a bit frustrated.
Nate set down his tablet and stood up.
He pulled up a chair and sat down directly in front of me, blocking my view of the other men in the room.
His voice dropped lower as he spoke.
"We're conducting trials for women who are experiencing unexplained pregnancies," he said quietly. "Unexplained pregnancies?"
I repeated, my voice rising in surprise.
"But I'm not pregnant."
Nate reached into his pocket and pulled out a small device that looked like a cross between a cell phone and a stethoscope.
"Let's verify that," he said, moving the scanner towards my abdomen.
"Wait," I said, pushing his hand away.
"Why do you think I'm pregnant?"
Nate sighed, glancing at the other men before meeting my eyes again.
The Boyfriend Experiment
"I'm just doing my job," he said, his voice softening.
"Okay?"
He pressed a button on the device in his hand, and suddenly the white walls flickered and began to change color.
The floor beneath my feet vibrated slightly, and I felt a strange tingling sensation in the air.
I looked around in confusion as the room transformed before my eyes.
The walls turned into a bright red and gold striped pattern, like the inside of a circus tent.
The ceiling transformed into a digital projection of a starry night sky.
And then, out of nowhere, holographic images appeared all around me.
There were acrobats swinging from virtual trapezes, clowns juggling glowing orbs, and even a lion tamer cracking a whip at an invisible beast. The other men in scrubs continued to work as if nothing was happening.
They didn't even glance up from their tasks as virtual performers twirled and leaped around them.

I gripped the edge of my bed tightly, my knuckles white with tension.
A digital clown approached me, juggling three glowing orbs that seemed to float in mid-air.
He grinned at me and winked, then tossed one of the orbs right at me.
I flinched back instinctively, but it passed through me like mist.
