I stood in front of my mistress's door and rang the doorbell.
After a few moments, the door was opened by Lulu, my mistress of five years.
She was still as beautiful and kind-hearted as she had been all those years ago when I first met her.
"Hello, Lulu," I said with a smile.
"Hi, Arthur. Come on in."
She let me in and closed the door behind me.
"How was your day?" she asked.
"It was fine," I replied.
Lulu smiled and walked over to me.
She kissed me on the cheek and then on the lips.
I could smell the alcohol in her, but it wasn't too much.
"I'm glad you're home," she said.
"Me too," I replied.
We sat down on the couch and she handed me a glass of whiskey.
I took a sip and then asked her, "How was your day?"
"It was good," she replied.
"I went out with some friends to celebrate one of their birthdays."
"That's great. I'm sure you had a lot of fun," I said.
"Yeah, I did," she replied.
We sat in silence for a few moments and then she asked, "Arthur, can I ask you something?"
"Of course. What is it?"
I asked.
"Do you still love me?" she asked.
I was taken aback by her question.

I took another sip of whiskey, letting the question hang in the air.
Lulu stood up from the couch and walked to the center of the living room.
She stood there with her back to me, not looking at me.
Without turning around, she said softly but firmly, "Come here."
I set my glass down on the coffee table and got up from the couch.
I walked over to her and stood behind her.
She still didn't turn around to look at me.
Her shoulders were tense, and I could tell that she was nervous.
The room felt warmer than it had before, and I could feel her body heat radiating off of her.
Her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her dress as she waited for my response.

"Lulu, there's something I need to tell you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
She finally turned to face me, her eyes searching mine with a mix of hope and fear.
"I've been offered a job overseas, and I think I have to take it."
Lulu's face contorted in a mix of shock and sadness.
The whiskey glass in her hand trembled slightly before she set it down on the table with a sharp clink.
Her perfume, usually comforting, now filled the air with an overwhelming scent that made me feel lightheaded.
I reached out to touch her arm, but she took a step back, creating a distance between us that felt like an insurmountable chasm.
The room seemed to shrink around us, the walls closing in as the tension grew thicker than the whiskey we had been drinking.
Lulu wrapped her arms around herself protectively, her lips quivering as she tried to process the news.
I noticed her fingers drumming nervously against her forearm, a habit she had when she was anxious or upset.
The silence stretched between us, heavy with unspoken words and unmet expectations.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner, Arthur?" she asked, her voice cracking slightly.
"I didn't know how to, Lulu," I admitted, feeling the weight of my decision pressing down on me.

She took a deep breath, steadying herself before saying, "Then let's make the most of the time we have left."
