I was never really the type to get nervous, but having a boner in class while sitting next to my hot roommate was not my idea of a good time.
I had just started at this new university, transferring from my old school in our small town to here, where I knew no one.
Well, technically, I knew one person.
Noah, my childhood friend who had also just started here.
We shared a room, along with another guy and Sydney, the girl who sat next to me in class.
She was reading a book and seemed completely unaware of my situation.
Or maybe she was just ignoring me.
I wouldn’t blame her if she was.
I was definitely not making a good first impression.
"Sydney," the teacher said, catching her attention and making her look up at him.
"Yes?""I asked you a question."
"Oh, sorry. I wasn’t paying attention."
"Obviously," he dryly replied.
"What was the question again?"
He sighed and repeated it.
"What do you think about love? Do you believe in it or is it just a fairy tale?"
I looked at Sydney, waiting for her answer.
I already knew what mine would be.
I watched her face turn a delicate shade of pink as she fidgeted with the pages of her book.
The whole class was silent, waiting for her to say something.
She kept her eyes fixed on her desk, her long dark hair falling over her face.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally spoke.
Her voice was so soft that I had to lean closer to hear what she was saying.
"Love is a fairy tale to me."
There was something in her voice that made my chest tighten.
The teacher didn’t say anything else and moved on to the next student, but I couldn’t stop staring at Sydney’s profile.
She went back to reading her book, but I could see how her hands were shaking slightly when she turned the page.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I watched her fingers grip the book tighter, her knuckles turning white.
The teacher’s voice was just a distant noise in the background as I tried to figure out what to say to her.
Anything to make her look up at me.
Students around us shuffled papers and whispered to each other, but Sydney remained frozen, her eyes fixed on the same page she hadn’t turned in minutes.
I shifted in my seat, inching closer to her.
My sweaty palms gripped the edge of my desk as I tried to gather my thoughts.
The words built up in my throat as I watched a strand of her dark hair fall across her face.
She didn’t brush it away.
