I was talking to my boyfriend, Jon, about something, I don't know what.
But as we were walking down the empty hall, he pulled me into a room.
I knew it was a closet of some sort because it was small, but I didn't think much of it until I heard the door lock behind us and realized we were stuck.
"The fuck?"
Jon looked around frantically, trying to find an exit.
"Are you serious?!"
I said, laughing.
"How did you not realize this was the janitor's closet?"
He shrugged.
"I wasn't paying attention."
"Well now we're stuck," I said.
"We can't exactly yell for help. No one is going to hear us."
Jon sighed and leaned against the wall.
"Well in a worst-case scenario, someone will smell us in a few days."
I rolled my eyes.
"This isn't funny," I said.
Although secretly, it kind of was.
I mean who gets stuck in a janitor's closet with their boyfriend?
Only me.
"Well it's not like we're going to die," Jon said.
"But we are going to have to pee eventually."
I groaned.
"We aren't exactly in the most hygienic environment."
Jon chuckled and pulled me close.
"Well we'll just have to make our own little bathroom."
I raised an eyebrow at him and pushed him away.
The Boyfriend Effect
"Let me see if I can get a signal," I said, pulling my phone out of the pocket of my cheer uniform.
But no such luck.
I showed Jon the screen and he pulled out his own phone, waving it around like an idiot.
"I'm not getting anything either," he said.
I sighed and walked over to the corner of the closet, checking to see if there was a spot with reception.
There wasn't.
The closet was so cramped that I kept bumping into mops and cleaning supplies as I moved around.
The smell of bleach was starting to make me dizzy.
"Maybe we can stack some buckets or something," Jon said, looking around at the shelves of supplies.
"If we can get up high enough, maybe we'll be able to get a signal."
The Boyfriend Effect
"No way," I said, shaking my head.
"The last thing we need is one of us falling and getting a concussion."
He ignored me and started stacking buckets on top of each other.
I watched as he climbed onto them and stretched his arm up toward the ceiling. "Come on," he muttered, wobbling on his toes as he tried to reach higher.
"Please just work."
The Boyfriend Effect
Suddenly his foot slipped off one of the buckets and he fell backwards, heading straight for a shelf of cleaning supplies.
"Jon!" I shouted, rushing forward to catch him before he hit the ground.
He landed awkwardly, knocking over a few bottles that clattered to the floor.
As I helped him up, he winced and said, "Okay, maybe you're right about the concussion thing."
After I had steadied him from his near-fall, I realized that we were pressed together in the dim closet, our faces inches apart.
The only light came from a sliver under the door, casting shadows on the walls.
Jon's concerned expression was illuminated by the faint glow.
His hands were still on my waist, steadying himself after his fall.
The chemical smell of the closet was still there, but it faded into the background as I focused on Jon's face.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, and I knew he could feel it too.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the sound of our ragged breathing.
"I wasn't thinking. That was stupid."
I shook my head slightly, unable to find the words to respond.
I was too busy taking in every detail of his face.
The Boyfriend Effect
There was a small scar above his left eyebrow that I had never noticed before.
His eyes were a deep brown that seemed to darken as I stared into them.
His lips were parted slightly, and I could feel his warm breath on my skin. As we stood there, frozen in time, I became aware of other details that I had never noticed before.
The way his thumb traced small circles on my hip where his hand rested.
The way his hair curled slightly at the nape of his neck.
The way his chest rose and fell with each breath he took.
It was as if time had slowed down, and all that existed was this moment between us.
I should have stepped back, put some distance between us.
But instead, I leaned closer, pressing my body against his.
My cheerleading uniform rustled against his baseball practice clothes as I moved.
He didn't pull away; instead, he tilted his head down so that our foreheads touched.
In that quiet, suspended moment, I realized being stuck wasn't so bad after all.
