I was never really a morning person, but I was always willing to get up early when I had baseball practice.
It was my favorite time of day.
I loved the smell of the dew on the grass as I walked across the field.
I also loved how quiet it was with only my teammates around.
I could never quite put my finger on why, but I was always in a better mood after practice.
Maybe it was the exercise, or the fresh air, or just the fact that I got to do what I loved every morning, but whatever it was, I was grateful for that hour and a half I got to spend on the diamond each day.
My stomach began to cramp, and I knew what was coming next.
"Hey guys, I’m gonna head out," I said, trying to sound as casual as possible.
"Yeah, okay," Nick said.
"See you at home, man."
I walked off the field quickly, not wanting to throw up in front of my teammates.
I had done that before, and it didn’t exactly make me popular.
As soon as I made it off the field, I ran to the nearest bathroom and leaned over the trash can.
The first thing that came out was all the coffee I had drunk that morning, followed by every single thing I had eaten since dinner the night before.
I heaved until there was nothing left in my stomach.

I gripped the bathroom sink, my legs still shaking from the exertion.
I turned on the cold water and cupped my hands under the stream, bringing them to my mouth to rinse out the metallic taste.
I spit and repeated this process until I could no longer taste anything but water.
When I was finally satisfied, I looked up at my reflection in the mirror.
My skin was pale, and my eyes were bloodshot.
I fished my phone out of my back pocket and typed out a quick text to Nick.
"You need study snacks before finals?"
I knew he stress-ate during exams, and I also knew he would appreciate some Gatorade after a long morning of practice.
The bathroom door creaked open, and I straightened up quickly, pretending to wash my hands.
A freshman walked in and gave me a nod before heading into a stall.

My legs felt shaky as I walked across the empty parking lot, my duffel bag clutched tightly in my hand.
The morning sun hit me square in the face, making me squint and bringing another wave of nausea.
I stopped at my car and fumbled with the keys, swallowing hard against the acid that still burned my throat.
Finally, I got the door open and climbed inside.
I blasted the AC and reclined my seat, giving myself a moment before I started driving.
My phone buzzed on the passenger seat, Nick’s name flashing on the screen.
"Are you okay?"
I texted back "heading home" and started the engine.
I took a few deep breaths before pulling out of my parking spot, focusing on keeping my breathing steady so I wouldn’t throw up again.
As I drove away, the weight of solitude settled in, a quiet reminder of the battles I fought alone.
