I came back to Oakdale for one reason and one reason only: to see my favorite band.
Well, that, and to catch up with some old friends.
But mostly my favorite band.
I’d been coming to this festival every year since I was sixteen and could drive myself.
It had become a tradition, one I loved and looked forward to all year.
And even though I now lived all the way in San Francisco, a three-hour drive away, I came back for it every year.
It wasn’t just about the music, although that was a big part of why I loved the festival so much.
It was also about the sense of community, of coming together with all the other people in town who loved the same music I did.
And even though I lived in a different city now, I still felt like this was home, like this was where I belonged.
And at the center of it all was my favorite band.
They played every year and even though they now toured internationally and had sold millions of albums, they still came back to Oakdale’s annual festival because it was where they’d gotten their start.
"I’m so excited," Jesse squealed beside me.
I turned to her and grinned.
"I can’t tell."
She rolled her eyes and smacked my arm.
"You’re such a dork."
"Hey, that’s not nice," I said.
But I couldn’t help but grin at her.
It had been twelve years since we’d last seen each other.

I scanned the festival grounds, looking for a spot to set up.
The area in front of the stage was packed with people, all jostling for a good view.
I didn’t care about being up front, but I wanted to be able to see the stage.
I spotted a small clearing off to the side, near a big maple tree.
It was far enough from the speakers that we could talk without screaming at each other, but still close enough to get a good view of the stage.
"This way," I said, tugging Jesse along behind me.
The crowd was thick and it was hard to push our way through.
There were teenagers jumping up and down and screaming at each other, couples sprawled on picnic blankets, and families with little kids running around.
Jesse stumbled over someone’s blanket and I grabbed her arm with my free hand to steady her. "Thanks," she said breathlessly.
"No problem."

We finally made it to the clearing and I let go of Jesse’s hand.
I gestured to the patch of grass in front of us.
"What do you think?"
I asked her.
She looked around and then nodded.

"It’s perfect," she said.
"Good."
I sat down on the grass and Jesse followed suit.
I spread out the blanket I’d brought with me and Jesse pulled out a bag of snacks from her backpack.
We sat cross-legged on the blanket, munching on chips and pretzels while we talked.
The sun was starting to set, casting long shadows through the maple leaves above us.
The stage crew was finishing up setting up the equipment and the crowd was growing more restless by the minute.
Jesse was telling me about her plans for college when suddenly, a guitar riff cut through the air.
She froze mid-sentence and grabbed my arm.
"Oh my god," she breathed.
I grinned at her and she smiled back.
She’d always grabbed my arm when she got excited or scared or nervous.
It had been one of her habits since we were little kids.
