My name is Hailey Thompson.
I go to church and one of the boys that sings in the choir is named Michael.
Michael is 18 and he has special needs.
He is in high school and his two teachers are Miss Tippet and Miss Wilson.
They are mean to him.
They call him names like retard and idiot.
They don't let him do anything or answer any questions.
They make fun of him in front of the whole class and tell him he will never learn or amount to anything.
Michael doesn't answer them.
He just does what they tell him to do and takes the abuse.
He is a very nice boy and he doesn't deserve the crap from those two women.
He loves playing basketball and he loves singing in the choir.
He told me that he has 4 more years of school and then he would be done.
He will have to go to a school for people with special needs after that but he will still sing in the choir.
I plan on going to a community college and then enrolling in a program to become a special education teacher.
I want to help kids like Michael.
I want to make sure that no other student has to go through what Michael has to go through.
I want to make sure that no other student gets treated like crap from their teachers.
The Boy Who Changed My Life
After choir practice I walk to the bulletin board and I see a bright yellow flyer.
It is advertising a special needs program at my high school.
I pull it off the board and read through it.
The school is expanding their special education department next semester and they are hiring experienced teachers who are caring and willing to work with kids that have special needs.
The program accepts transfer students.
They have a lot of activities that Michael would love, especially an adaptive sports program that includes basketball.
My hands are shaking as I take a picture of the contact information at the bottom of the flyer with my phone.
This could be Michael's ticket out of those two bitches' classes.
"Michael, I found something that could change everything for you," I said, holding up my phone with the picture of the flyer.
"What is it, Hailey?" Michael asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.
"It's a new program at my high school that has everything you love—basketball, choir, and teachers who actually care," I explained, feeling a surge of hope.

"Really?"
Michael asked, his voice filled with excitement.
I nodded and sat down on the steps of the church, pulling out my phone to show him the details I had photographed.
Michael sat down next to me, leaning in close as I scrolled through the pictures.
"Look here, Michael," I said, pointing to a paragraph that highlighted one of the teachers.
"This teacher, Mrs. Anderson, has been working with special needs students for fifteen years. She's a coach for an adaptive basketball team and she leads a special needs choir program."
Michael's face lit up at the mention of choir.
"She's known for her patience and kindness," I continued.
"She would be a much better teacher for you than Miss Tippet or Miss Wilson."
Michael's hand trembled as he pointed to Mrs. Anderson's picture on the flyer.
"She'll be my teacher?"
"Yes, if we can get you transferred to this program," I replied, feeling a mix of determination and urgency.
"But how do we do that?" Michael asked, his voice tinged with both hope and uncertainty.
"We'll talk to your parents and the school; I'll help you every step of the way," I assured him, squeezing his hand gently.
