Evan
He is a 10 year old student. He is caring, responsible, and humorous. Evan helps his family take care of his grandmother who lives with them. He often assists with household chores and looks after his younger sister, Emily. He tries to make his mother happy by doing chores and taking care of his sister. Ben
He is Evan's older brother who has left home. He used to live with Evan and their family but now lives on his own. He is absentminded, irresponsible, and carefree. Ben occasionally returns home to visit, bringing gifts but often getting into trouble by making a mess. Despite this, his brothers remember him fondly and look forward to his visits.
Emily
She is Evan's 7 year old sister. She is playful, mischievous, and energetic. Emily often gets into trouble by breaking things or spilling things on herself, such as wetting her pants. Despite the chaos she creates, Evan tries to help her and make her happy. She looks up to her older brother and enjoys spending time with him. She shares a bond with Evan and their family.
I was doing my homework when I suddenly smelt a whiff of pee.
I looked up and saw that my 7 year old sister Emily had wet her pants.
"Emily, you naughty girl!"
I said with a chuckle.
Emily looked up at me with a sheepish grin.
"Sorry Evan," she said.
I sighed and put down my pen.
It wasn't the first time that Emily had wet her pants.
She was a bit of a klutz and would often trip over herself or spill things on herself.
I would always try to make her laugh when she did something wrong, because she would get very upset if I scolded her.
"Come on then, let's get you cleaned up."
I stood up and pulled Emily by the hand to the bathroom.
Our grandmother, who lived with us, was sitting on the couch watching TV.
She smiled at us as we walked past her.
"Grandma, Emily has wet her pants again!"
I said, winking at her.
"Oh dear, sorry Grandma. I'll try to be more careful next time."
Emily said, looking at Grandma with big sorry eyes.
Grandma laughed and shook her head.
"I'm not worried about my chair dear. I'm just glad that you're happy."
She looked at me and smiled.
"Thank you for taking care of your sister Evan. You're a good boy."
I smiled back at her and nodded my head.
"I'll go and get some clean clothes for Emily while you get undressed in the bathroom."
I guided Emily down the hallway to the bathroom, keeping my hand on her shoulder as she waddled along in her wet clothes.
When we got to the bathroom door, I stopped and turned her to face me.
"Okay, now go and get changed."
Emily stood there fidgeting with the hem of her shirt.
She didn't make any attempt to go into the bathroom.
I gave her a little push on the shoulder.
"Go on Em. The longer you wait, the more uncomfortable you'll be."
Emily shuffled her feet but still didn't move.
I could see a small puddle forming where she was standing.
I opened the bathroom door and pointed inside.
"Come on Em. The sooner you change, the sooner we can go back to playing."
I leaned against the doorframe and watched her continue to fidget and stare at the floor.
The puddle was getting bigger as more droplets fell from her soaked pants.
I grabbed a towel from the rack and held it out in front of me, dangling it like a matador's cape.
I started to make swooshing sounds as I moved it around.
Emily's eyes followed the towel, a small smile starting to form on her lips.
I waved the towel closer to her face, pretending that it was chasing her.
She backed away slightly, her shoulders relaxing as she tried not to laugh.
I made a silly bull-fighting pose, stomping my feet and swinging the towel around my head.
Emily couldn't hold back any longer and burst out laughing.
"Okay, okay, I'll go change," she giggled, finally stepping into the bathroom.
As she closed the door behind her, I heard her voice, quieter now, "Evan, can I tell you a secret?"
I leaned closer to the door and whispered back, "Of course, Em. What's up?"
"I need help changing my clothes," she whispered back, her voice small and embarrassed.
I paused for a moment, trying to think of what to say.
Ma usually helped her change, but she wasn't home right now.
I looked down at the puddle that had formed on the floor outside the bathroom door.
I could see Emily's shadow through the crack at the bottom of the door, but I couldn't see what she was doing.
"Em, are you okay in there?"
I asked softly.
"No," she said, sounding frustrated.
"I can't get my pants off. They're too wet."
I sighed and rubbed my forehead with my hand.
I didn't want to go into the bathroom with her, but I knew I had to help her somehow.
"Okay Em, I'm coming in."
I slowly opened the door and stepped inside, keeping my eyes fixed on the floor.
Emily was standing in front of me, her pants sagging down around her ankles.
She was trying to peel them off her legs, but they were stuck fast.
"Here Em," I said quietly, picking up a clean pair of pants from the laundry basket next to me.
I held them out in front of me, keeping my eyes averted from her wet clothes.
"Take these and pull them on when you've got your other ones off."
Emily took the pants from me and looked down at them in confusion. "How do I get these ones off?" she asked, looking back up at me with pleading eyes.
I sighed again and moved closer to her, holding onto her shoulders to keep her steady as she balanced on one foot and then the other to pull her wet pants off.
As soon as they were down around her ankles, I turned away quickly and picked them up off the floor before they made any more mess.
I could hear Emily pulling on her clean pants behind me as I walked over to the toilet and dropped her wet clothes into the bowl.
When I turned back around, Emily was standing next to me again, holding onto my arm for support as she pulled her pants up higher around her waist.
I smiled at her, relieved, as she gave me a quick hug and whispered, "Thanks, Evan," before darting back out to the hallway.
