The Boy Next Door

Scenario:Hyeri arrived at school after the chaos of the basketball match. Her mind was cluttered with thoughts, so she sought a moment of peace and walked to the football field. There, she noticed a few boys playing and decided to sit in the stands. With her headphones on and a book in hand, she aimed to immerse herself in reading. She was lost in a fantasy far removed from the drama of her everyday life when she suddenly felt a presence next to her. Startled, she glanced to her side to find Riki sitting there, clad in his football jersey, his dark hair tousled and a cocky smirk on his face. “What are you doing here, Aeri?” he asked, his voice a mix of curiosity and indifference. Hyeri quickly pulled out her earphones, her heart racing. “Uh, nothing, just sitting here and—” “Okay, whatever,” he interrupted, dismissing her as if her words didn’t matter. Hyeri felt a wave of annoyance wash over her. She didn’t understand why he always had to intrude on her personal space. “Are you here to play?” she asked, trying to sound casual but unable to hide her irritation. “No, I’m here to watch. What are you doing here?” he replied, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. “Oh, then why are you in your jersey?” she shot back, crossing her arms defiantly. Riki raised an eyebrow, his expression unbothered. “It’s called being prepared. Ever heard of it?” He leaned back, resting his arms on the bleachers, an easy confidence radiating from him. Hyeri rolled her eyes. “You’re full of yourself, you know that?” “Yeah, and you’re full of surprises,” he quipped, glancing sideways at her, his smirk deepening. “What’s a bookworm like you doing on a football field?” “I just needed a break from…everything,” she admitted reluctantly, her voice softer now. “The basketball match last night was a bit much.” Riki stood up and joined his teammates for the match, leaving Hyeri alone on the bleachers. She was so wiped out that she didn’t even notice he was gone. She leaned her head back against the seat and slid down onto the floor, legs stretched out. The cool metal felt nice against her skin. Before long, she was out cold. The book slipped from her fingers, landing softly beside her. After the game, Riki wiped the sweat off his forehead with a towel. He strolled over to the bleachers, scanning until he spotted Hyeri. She was curled up, head resting on the chair, breathing deep and steady. Riki couldn’t help but chuckle. “You’re such a pain, you know that?” he muttered to himself. But as he looked closer, he saw how peaceful she looked. Her usual tough exterior was gone, replaced by a soft, vulnerable expression. His smirk turned into a gentle smile. “But you look cute like this,” he whispered. He didn’t want to wake her, so he carefully lifted her head and rested it on his shoulder, then sat down next to her, making sure not to jolt her. Hyeri’s head felt warm against him. Riki took a swig from his water bottle, eyes glued to her. He picked up the book she dropped. The pages were worn, and he could tell she was halfway through. He started reading, but his mind was more on her than the story. He felt a mix of annoyance and something warmer, something he couldn’t quite put his finger on. His phone buzzed, and he pulled it out, scrolling through messages. He paused, then snapped a picture of sleeping Hyeri, capturing her serene face and how snugly she fit against him. He’d tease her about it later, but for now, he wanted to save this moment. Hyeri stirred, moving slowly. She pressed her head into his shoulder more. He felt her breath against his neck, sending a shiver down his spine. “Hey, finally awake, sleepyhead?” Riki asked, voice low and teasing. She rubbed her eyes, hair a mess. “What time is it?” she mumbled, voice still thick with sleep. Riki chuckled. “It’s 2:15. You skipped two lessons.” Her eyes widened as reality hit her. She shot up, no longer resting on him. “Two lessons? I can’t believe I slept that long!” Riki handed her the book she’d dropped. “Here, pick up where you left off. But maybe it’s time to head back to class.” As she walked away, Riki watched her go, his fingers absentmindedly scrolling through the picture he had taken

I arrived at school earlier than usual.
The basketball match had taken place the night before, and a lot of things had happened.
I was still thinking about it when I walked through the school gates.
A few students were already hanging around, talking and laughing.
I walked past them and headed towards the football field.
There were only a few boys playing, and they barely even glanced at me as I walked past them.
I sat down on the bleachers, putting my headphones on and listening to music.
I didn’t want to think about anything right now, so I closed my eyes and let the music wash over me.
It was nice to just sit here in peace.
The football field was usually empty during lessons, and I liked coming here because it was quiet and peaceful.
Sometimes, Seo came here during his free period and sat with me, but he didn’t try to convince me to join social activities or anything like that.
He knew that I preferred being alone and he respected that.
Sometimes, Riki came here after his lessons finished, but he always sat far away from me and didn’t bother me at all.
Sometimes, he even left without saying a word to me, but I didn’t mind.
The Boy Next Door
I watch Seo walking across the field, his uniform neat as always.
He waves at me and I pull my headphones down around my neck.
The morning sun catches his glasses as he climbs the bleacher steps, making his way towards me.
He’s carrying two paper cups, and the smell of coffee drifts over.
Without asking, he hands me one - he knows my usual order.
The Boy Next Door
I accept it, feeling the warmth through the cup.
Seo settles beside me, leaving a comfortable space between us.
He sips his drink and pulls out his phone, showing me a message from the basketball team's group chat.
I scroll through the messages, seeing my teammates discussing strategies for our next game.
The afternoon sun casts long shadows across the football field, and Seo points to specific comments about defensive formations.
My coffee grows cold in my hands while I process the information.
Coach wants us to work on our zone defense, and the team needs my input as captain.
Seo glances at me, his tone careful.
The Boy Next Door
"You should come to practice tomorrow," he says.
I take another sip of my coffee, grimacing at its temperature, before handing his phone back.
"Yeah," I say, watching a group of juniors kick a ball around the field.
