It was only the first day of school, and I was already planning on committing a felony.
Okay, maybe not a felony, but I was about to do something that was definitely against my own laws.
I was going to talk to my crush.
It was all my friends’ fault.
Maddie and Sydney had been bugging me all morning about it.
"Go talk to him," Maddie had said.
"He’s hot, and he deserves a chance."
Sydney had nodded in agreement.
"He’s not at all what you’d expect. Trust me."
What did they mean by that?
And why did they think I should be the one to start the conversation?
I was shy.
Very shy.
And when I said shy, I meant SHY.
I barely spoke above a whisper to my own family, let alone strangers.
But there was something about Caleb that drew me in.
Maybe it was the way he smiled when he saw his girlfriend, or the way his hair curled slightly at the edges when he ran his hands through it.
The Boy Next Door
I grip my lunch tray tighter, my knuckles turning white as I weave between crowded cafeteria tables.
Caleb sits near the window, laughing with his friend over something on his phone.
My legs feel wobbly with each step, and the chattering around me fades into a dull buzz.
Twenty feet away.
Fifteen.
Ten.
I almost turn back twice, but catch Maddie's encouraging thumbs-up from our usual table.
Five feet now.
Caleb's friend notices me first, his eyebrows lifting slightly.
My heart pounds so hard I worry they can hear it.

The Boy Next Door
I clutch my copy of Harry Potter closer to my chest, using it like a shield.
Three feet.
Two.
I pause two steps from their table, my fingers turning white around the lunch tray edges.
Caleb's friend nudges him, and he looks up from his phone.
His brown eyes meet mine, and for a moment, the entire cafeteria seems to go silent.
My mouth goes dry.
I try to remember the words I practiced all morning in front of my bathroom mirror, but they've vanished into thin air.
The Boy Next Door
The Harry Potter book slides precariously on my tray, drawing Caleb's attention.
He smiles when he sees the cover, and that small gesture gives me the final push I need.
