Maria
She is a high school student who dreams of becoming a singer. She is imaginative, determined, and romantic. Her two best friends Clara and Lyda support her unconditionally. Maria has a crush on a new boy named Ken after seeing him play volleyball. She accidentally bumps into him and feels electrified. Her father died a year ago, and she now lives with her mother who runs a family business. Maria struggles with her feelings for Ken and the drama at school.
Clara
She is Maria's best friend since elementary school. She is outgoing, bold, and flirtatious. Clara has a boyfriend named Richard, whom she loves deeply. She encourages Maria to pursue her feelings for Ken. Clara is confident and often teases Maria about her romantic escapades. She helps Maria in her family business and accompanies her to social events. Clara's outspoken nature often gets her into trouble, but she remains unapologetic and assertive in her relationships.
Jenson
He is Lyda's crush and a student at St Stephen's High School. He is popular, charming, and carefree. Jenson plays volleyball alongside Ken and becomes friends with him despite not knowing his family history that haunts him like a shadow. He remains oblivious to Lyda's true feelings for him as they continue to be friends only within their social circle limited by his indifference.
I was running down the hallway excitedly when I didn't notice the guy in front of me until I bumped into him and his books fell to the floor.
"Oh my sorry"
I said trying to pick up the scattered books.
"Its okay"
He said smiling at me before continuing on his way.
I stood there watching him go before I could finally pick up the books and throw them away in the trash can.
I smiled to myself as I remembered how he smiled at me and my heart skipped a beat.
Clara and Lyda were the first to notice my smile, which was rare for me.
"Who is he?" Clara asked as we sat in the cafeteria during lunch break.
"Which one?"
I asked confused.
"The new boy you just smiled at"
Lyda answered.
Clara was my best friend since elementary school, while Lyda was also my best friend since elementary school as well.
We all attended the same school, which was St Stephen's High School.
"Clara who?" I asked again.
"The one that played volley ball"
She said, while Lyda also nodded her head in agreement.
"I don't know him yet"
I said while taking a bite of my sandwich.
"Well you are going to get to know him"
Clara said smiling mischievously at me.
"What?"
I asked confused.
"We are going to make him your boyfriend"
After lunch, we huddled in the empty art room where Clara pulled out her pink notebook and began to sketch a crude map of Ken's volleyball practice route.
Lyda raided the supply closet for better paper, while I sat on a paint-stained stool, fidgeting with my bracelet.
Clara explained her "accidentally" bump-into-him-again plan, complete with an apology and a casual invitation to hang out.
The late afternoon sun streamed through the dusty windows as Clara assigned us our roles: Lyda would scout his schedule, I would practice conversation topics, and Clara would orchestrate our "chance" meeting.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" I asked, glancing nervously between Clara and Lyda.
"Absolutely," Clara replied confidently, tapping her pencil against the notebook.
Lyda grinned, adding, "Besides, it's about time you had a little adventure."
I lingered outside the gym doors after school, clutching my notebook and watching Ken through the window as he practiced with his teammates.
My palms grew sweaty as I rehearsed the conversation starters Clara had suggested: "Do you prefer a one-handed or two-handed spike?" and "How do you think the team will perform this season?"
Students passed by, giving me odd looks, but I remained rooted in place.
Through the glass, I could see Ken spiking balls over the net, his movements fluid and powerful.
When practice finally ended and players began filing out, I quickly pretended to read my notes.
Ken emerged last, wiping his face with a towel.
I leaned against the wall near the gym doors, pretending to review my history notes while stealing glances through the window.
The squeaking of shoes and the thuds of volleyballs echoed from inside.
My palms dampened the paper as I watched Ken practice his serves, each one landing with precision in the opposite court.
Other players filed out, some giving me odd looks as they passed by.
I shifted my weight, trying to appear nonchalant while my heart pounded in my chest.
Finally, Ken emerged last, a towel draped around his neck and his dark hair still damp from practice.
Just as I opened my mouth to speak, a volleyball rolled out of the gym and came to a stop at my feet.
I picked it up, and with a deep breath, I called out his name.
I hold out the volleyball, my rehearsed questions dying in my throat as Ken approaches.
His eyes meet mine, and a small smile forms on his face.
Just as he reaches to take the ball, it explodes in my hands with a loud pop.
Colorful paper bits shower down between us as we both jump back.
Ken's startled expression quickly melts into genuine laughter, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
I stand frozen, covered in confetti, until I spot Clara and Lyda peeking around the corner with a deflated practice ball and what looks like a confetti cannon.
Ken wipes tears from his eyes, still chuckling, and steps forward to help brush the paper from my hair.
"Is this your idea of a conversation starter?" he asks, still grinning as he flicks a piece of confetti from my shoulder.
I glance over at Clara and Lyda, who are trying to stifle their laughter, and reply, "Not exactly what I had planned, but it seems memorable enough."
Ken nods, his laughter subsiding into a warm smile, "Well, you've definitely got my attention now."
I hurry back to music class, my cheeks still burning from the encounter with Ken.
Slipping into my usual seat near the piano, I notice Mrs. Anne's stern glance as I arrive late again.
Ken enters shortly after, taking his place at the front of the room.
As he begins singing our competition piece, his voice fills the room with perfect pitch and control.
My stomach drops as I realize we're already rehearsing without me.
Mrs. Anne stops the performance abruptly, her eyes fixed on me.
"Miss Chen, this is the third time this month you've been late," she says sternly.
"And last week you missed practice altogether. Do you understand how crucial these rehearsals are?"
I nod sheepishly, feeling a mix of guilt and embarrassment.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Anne. It won't happen again."
She sighs, her expression softening slightly.
"See that it doesn't. Now, let's start again from the beginning."
As we begin rehearsing once more, I can't help but steal glances at Ken.
His dedication to music is evident in every note he sings. The weeks go by in a blur of schoolwork and music rehearsals.
I find myself looking forward to those moments when Ken and I share the stage together, our voices harmonizing in perfect unison.
But despite our growing connection through music, we haven't had a chance to talk one-on-one since the confetti incident.
It feels like fate has other plans for us—plans that involve a lot of singing and not much conversation.
"Miss Chen, can you step outside for a moment?"
Mrs. Anne asks during a particularly grueling rehearsal session.
I exchange a confused glance with Ken before following her out into the hallway.
"Is everything alright?"
I ask nervously as she closes the door behind us.
Mrs. Anne's expression turns serious as she crosses her arms over her chest.
"Miss Chen, I've noticed that you've been struggling lately," she says bluntly.
"Your performances have been subpar, and you seem distracted during rehearsals."
I swallow hard, feeling a knot form in my stomach.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Anne," I reply softly.
"I know I haven't been doing my best lately."
She sighs heavily before placing a hand on my shoulder.
"Look, I understand that everyone goes through tough times," she explains gently.
"But you need to find a way to balance your personal life and your commitments here."
I nod, trying to muster the courage to voice my concerns.
"Honestly, Mrs. Anne, it's just been hard focusing with everything going on outside of school."
She nods sympathetically.
"I know it can't be easy, but you have to remember that music is a part of you too. Don't let your passion suffer because of external factors."
I take a deep breath, feeling a mix of determination and guilt.
"You're right," I reply, my voice steadier now.
"I'll do better, I promise."
Mrs. Anne smiles softly, her eyes filled with understanding.
"I know you will," she says.
"Now, let's get back in there and show them what we're capable of."
As we walk back into the room, Ken looks up from his sheet music and catches my eye for a moment.
I can't help but wonder if he senses the weight I've been carrying lately.
But as we begin singing once more, our voices intertwining in perfect harmony, I feel a sense of hope wash over me.
Maybe, just maybe, things are starting to look up after all.
"Hey, want to grab lunch with me?"
Ken asks as the bell rings, signaling the end of our music class.
I glance down at my phone, realizing I completely lost track of time.
"Sure," I reply with a smile, quickly packing up my things.
We walk side by side through the bustling hallways until we reach the school courtyard.
The spring breeze carries the scent of blooming cherry blossoms as we sit down on our favorite bench. Ken pulls out his phone and hands me an earbud before putting the other one in his own ear.
"Let's listen to our competition song one last time," he suggests with a grin.
As the familiar melody fills my ears, I close my eyes and let myself get lost in the rhythm.
Nearby students laugh and chat over their lunches while others play games or study for upcoming exams.
The sounds blend together with our music, creating a unique harmony that only this moment can provide.
Suddenly, Ken pauses the song and turns to face me.
His expression is serious for a moment before he reaches into his bag and pulls out a small white envelope addressed to me.
My heart skips a beat as I recognize it - my college acceptance letter that arrived this morning.
I already know what it says; I got into the same music program as Ken.
Without saying a word, we both smile at each other, understanding that this isn't an ending but a new beginning. The bell rings again, signaling the end of our lunch break, but neither of us makes a move to leave.
Ken breaks the silence first, his voice soft but full of excitement.
"Looks like we're going to be duet partners for a while longer," he says, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.
I nod, unable to contain my grin, "And maybe this time, we'll have more than just music to talk about."
We stand side by side, our robes fluttering in the warm breeze as we watch the last of our classmates receive their diplomas.
Clara and Lyda rush over to us, their own diplomas clutched tightly in their hands, and pull us into a group hug that nearly knocks us all off balance.
Ken's arm instinctively wraps around my waist to steady me, just as it did that first day by the volleyball court.
As we finally separate, Principal Stevens calls out the names of the final graduates.
Ken squeezes my hand one last time before walking up to receive his diploma.
When he returns to me, he pulls me close and kisses me softly on the lips, ignoring the whoops and cheers from our classmates.
