I was adopted at birth, my mum and dad had me when I was just a tiny baby.
My name is Milly Rose Smith, I am neuro divergent, I have ADHD and dyslexia.
I was told I was a quiet baby, not like my little sister Lucy who was born 2 years later, premature, she was always spitting up her dummy and throwing it across the room.
When she was old enough to sit in the high chair, she would spit her food all over the place and one day she spat all over my new white vest and shorts.
I remember being so annoyed and shouting at her to stop, but she just giggled at me.
She loved making me angry and would do anything to see me get into trouble.
I remember being so proud of her when she took her first steps, but I didn’t help her like I should have done, I was too busy playing with my toys.
I should have been a big sister and helped her more, but I was too selfish and didn’t care enough about what she did or where she went.
I regret that now and wish I could turn back time, but sadly you can’t.
When Lucy started school, I should have helped her get ready in the mornings, taken her to school with our parents, but no, I was too busy playing with my friends.
I sit in my room, playing with my new dollhouse, it’s pink and white with a little family of four, mum, dad and two children.
Lucy is standing in the doorway, she is holding her favorite stuffed rabbit, the one with the missing eye.
"Play with me," she begs, but I pretend not to hear her.
I arrange the tiny furniture and move the family around their perfect little house.
Lucy inches closer to me, dragging her rabbit along my carpet.
She reaches out to touch one of my dolls, but I snatch it away from her and turn my back on her.
She starts crying and I keep rearranging the dollhouse.
"Milly, why don't you ever want to play with me?" Lucy sniffles, clutching her rabbit tighter.
"Because you're always breaking my things, Lucy," I reply, trying to ignore the guilt creeping in.
"But I heard Mum and Dad talking," she whispers, "they said you're not really my sister."
I sit on my bed, staring at the pink dollhouse where Lucy and I last played together.
The one-eyed rabbit lies abandoned in the corner, covered in dust.
The house feels empty without her giggles and messy eating habits.
My hands shake as I pick up the doll I had refused to share.
The memory of her tear-stained face haunts me.
Her words echo in my mind: "You're not really my sister."
I clutch the doll to my chest, remembering how she would reach for it with her tiny fingers.
"Milly, did you hear me?" Lucy's voice is barely above a whisper, but it cuts through the silence.
"Yeah, I heard you," I reply, my voice trembling, "but what do you mean I'm not your sister?"
"I don't know," she says softly, "but they said something about finding you in a different hospital."
