I was a body swapper.
For one day a week, I rented out my healthy male body to women with disabilities.
It didn’t matter what their disability was – physical, mental, or emotional.
I only worked with women.
For one day a week, I gave them freedom from their disability.
I swapped bodies with them, and they got to be in a healthy body for a full day.
I stayed in their body, and they stayed in mine.
It was a simple business idea, but it had changed my life, and the lives of the dozens of women that I had helped.
It wasn’t cheap, but I had a steady stream of clients.
I only did one swap per week.
It didn’t leave me time for much else, but it didn’t matter.
My life was dull and uninteresting when I compared it other people’s.
My job made it interesting.
I learned about people in ways most would never experience.
I learned how to adapt to anything life threw at me.
Today was simple.
I was swapping with Sarah Mitchell.
She was wheelchair bound from a car accident that had left her with a spinal cord injury.
She wanted to feel normal for a day.
She wanted to walk, run, jump, and dance.
She had chosen today because she had nothing planned.
It was just a random Monday.
"I’m ready," Sarah said, looking at me with hopeful eyes.
She was excited, but also nervous.
The Body Swapper
I nodded.
This was a familiar sensation, but I could tell she wasn’t.
She would get used to it if she kept using my service.
"Here we go," I said.
I closed my eyes and focused on the sensation of our bodies swapping.
It was a strange feeling, but one I had gotten accustomed to over the years.
The world blurred around me for a moment, and then it came into focus again.
I opened my eyes and looked around.
I was in her wheelchair, looking up at myself standing in the middle of the room.
Sarah looked down at me, her eyes wide with wonder.
She flexed her legs and smiled when they responded.
She took a few tentative steps forward and then stopped to look down at herself again.
The Body Swapper
Then she laughed, a joyful sound that filled the room, and started walking around in circles. I watched from her perspective as she moved around the room.
She was a bit unsteady on her feet, but she was determined to keep going.
After a while, she sat back down in the wheelchair and turned to face me.
"You okay?" she asked with a smile.
"I’m good," I said back to her.
She nodded and then wheeled over to the door of the apartment we were in.
She opened it and looked out into the hallway before turning back to me again.
"I’m going out," she said.
"I’ll be fine," she added before I could say anything else.
I didn’t argue with her though; this was why we were doing this in the first place.
She wanted to experience life without her disability holding her back, so I let her go. She wheeled herself out into the hallway, and I pushed myself out behind her in her chair.
The Body Swapper
I nodded.
She wheeled over to the door and opened it, then she pushed herself out into the hallway.
I followed behind her in her wheelchair, watching as she expertly maneuvered it through the narrow corridor.
We reached the elevator and she pushed a button.
The doors opened and she wheeled inside.
I followed behind her, pushing her chair into the corner of the elevator car.
The doors closed and we began to move down.
Sarah looked at me with a smile on her face.
"I can’t wait to get out there," she said excitedly.
I smiled back at her, but I wasn’t sure what to say.
I was happy for her, but I was also a bit bored.
I had been in this body for a few hours now, and it was starting to feel like my own.
The Body Swapper
I was used to being in different bodies, but this one felt particularly foreign to me.
It was like I was wearing someone else’s clothes, but they were too small for me.
The elevator doors opened and Sarah wheeled out into the lobby of the apartment building.
She looked around at the people walking past us, but no one paid any attention to us.
She wheeled over to the front door and pushed it open, then she stopped and looked out into the bright sunlight outside. "Wow," she said softly.
"It’s beautiful."
She wheeled out into the sunlight and I followed behind her, pushing her chair into the shade of a nearby awning.
The sun was warm on my face, but it stopped there.
My legs didn’t feel like they were mine yet, so I couldn’t feel anything below my waist.
I shifted in the seat of the wheelchair, trying to get comfortable.
It didn’t work very well, though.
The chair was designed for someone else’s body, not mine.
Sarah turned around and looked at me with a smile on her face.
"Ready to go?" she asked excitedly.
I nodded back at her and she turned away again, wheeling off down the sidewalk in front of us.
I pushed her chair after her, watching as she moved farther away from me. The sidewalk was uneven and bumpy under my wheels, making it difficult to keep up with Sarah as she moved quickly down the street.
Every bump made me feel more disconnected from my body than before.
It was like I was just sitting in a chair that someone else was pushing around for me.
"Yeah, but there's something I need to tell you," I replied, hesitating slightly.
She paused, her hand on the door handle, and turned to face me. "What is it?"
"This isn't just a one-day thing for me; I've been considering making a permanent swap with someone," I confessed, watching her expression shift from excitement to surprise.
The Body Swapper
"Nothing," I said.
"It’s just a little weird."
She nodded and then turned back to the door.
She wheeled us out into the street and stopped at the corner.
She looked around, trying to get her bearings.
The street was busy, but no one paid any attention to us.
She pushed off from the curb and began to make her way down the street.
It was a bit of a bumpy ride, but she was determined to keep going.
I could tell she was excited to be out in the world again.
I could feel her happiness radiating from her body.
It was nice to see someone so happy.
I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen someone so full of joy.
The Body Swapper
It made me smile as we continued on our way down the street. We walked for a while, but then I started to feel something that I didn’t like.
It was pressure, but it wasn’t in my head or my chest.
It was lower, near my stomach.
I didn’t know what it was, but it wasn’t pleasant.
It started as a slight discomfort, but it grew until it was almost painful.
I didn’t know what to do about it, so I just sat there and tried to ignore it.
"Sarah," I called out as she continued walking.
She stopped and turned around to look at me.
"What is it?" she asked with concern in her eyes.
"I think there’s something you need to show me."
She nodded and turned back around.
We headed back to the apartment we had come from earlier. Inside, Sarah wheeled over to a bathroom door and opened it.
She wheeled inside and then closed the door behind us.
"What’s going on?" she asked as she turned around to face me again.
I shrugged my shoulders because I didn’t know what else to do.
"I don’t know," I said softly.
"It feels like pressure or something."
She nodded thoughtfully for a moment and then smiled weakly at me.
"I think I know what it is," she said quietly.
"It’s probably my bladder. It needs to be emptied."
I felt a wave of panic wash over me at her words, but I tried not to let it show on my face.
"I don’t know how to do that," I said softly, feeling a bit scared at the thought of doing something wrong. "That’s okay," Sarah said reassuringly as she wheeled over to a sink in the bathroom and pulled out a drawer underneath it.
The Body Swapper
She pulled out a bag and then wheeled over to the toilet.
She positioned herself beside me and then looked up at me.
"It’s not that hard," she said softly.
"First, you need to open the bag."
She demonstrated by opening the bag and then placing it on my lap.
"Next, you need to pull out the catheter."
She pulled out a long tube with a needle on the end and held it up for me to see.
"It’s called a catheter," she explained.
"You need to insert it into your bladder."
I nodded as I watched her demonstrate how to insert the catheter into her own body.
It was a bit awkward, but she made it look easy.
Once she had inserted the catheter, she sat back and smiled weakly at me.
The Body Swapper
"That’s it," she said softly.
"Now you just have to wait for your bladder to empty."
The Body Swapper
She sat there for a few minutes and then stood up.
She wheeled over to the sink and washed her hands.
Then she turned around and looked at me.
"Ready to try?" she asked softly.
I nodded and took a deep breath.
I reached down and picked up the bag, then I wheeled over to the toilet.
I positioned myself beside it and then opened the bag.
I pulled out the catheter and held it in my hand for a moment, trying to get up the nerve to insert it into my body.
Finally, I took a deep breath and inserted the catheter into my bladder.
It felt strange, but not painful.
I sat there for a few minutes, waiting for my bladder to empty.
When I was finished, I pulled out the catheter and placed it back in the bag.
The Body Swapper
I stood up and wheeled over to the sink, where Sarah was waiting for me. She smiled weakly at me as I washed my hands.
When I was finished, she nodded at me.
"You did it," she said softly.
"I couldn’t have done it without you," I replied with a smile.
She smiled back at me and then wheeled over to the door.
She opened it and then wheeled out into the hallway again.
We headed back to the elevator and got inside.
The doors closed behind us and we began to move upward once again.
When we reached our floor, Sarah pushed open the doors and wheeled out into the hallway again.
We headed back to her apartment and went inside.
Once we were inside, Sarah wheeled over to her bed and climbed in. "You did great today," she said softly as she settled in for a nap.
"Thanks," I replied with a smile.
I climbed into bed next to her and closed my eyes as well.
After a while, I felt Sarah stir next to me.
I opened my eyes and looked over at her as she sat up in bed.
"What time is it?" she asked softly as she looked at her watch.
"It’s about 2 o’clock," I replied with a yawn as I sat up in bed next to her.
She nodded thoughtfully for a moment and then smiled weakly at me.
"I think it's time we talk about the letter," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
I felt my heart skip a beat. "You mean the one from the hospital?"
"Yes," she replied, her eyes searching mine for understanding.
The Body Swapper
She nodded and then reached over to a table beside her bed.
She picked up an envelope and handed it to me with a steady hand.
I took the envelope from her and opened it carefully.
I pulled out the letter inside and began to read it aloud.
The letter was from the doctor at the hospital where Sarah had been treated.
It explained that she had made good progress in her recovery, but that there were still some things that needed to be done before she could be released.
The doctor explained that they were going to start her on a new medication to help with her pain and that they would be doing some physical therapy to help her regain strength in her legs.
He also mentioned that they would be doing some tests to see if there was anything else they could do to help her. As I finished reading the letter, I looked over at Sarah and saw relief wash over her face.
She smiled weakly at me as I handed the letter back to her.
"Thank you," she said softly, her voice filled with gratitude.
I nodded and climbed out of bed next to her.
I walked over to the window and looked out at the city below.
The Body Swapper
After a while, I heard Sarah stir behind me.
I turned around and saw that she was sitting up in bed, looking at me with a smile on her face.
"It's time for us to switch back," she said softly, her voice filled with sadness.
I nodded and walked over to the bed next to her.
We sat there for a moment, looking into each other's eyes.
Then, without saying anything, we both closed our eyes and focused on our breathing. As we sat there, I felt my body begin to feel strange again, like it had when we first switched bodies.
It was like my body was being pulled apart and then put back together again, but this time in its own form instead of Sarah's.
I opened my eyes and looked over at Sarah as she sat next to me in my body.
She smiled weakly at me as I helped her into the wheelchair beside the bed.
We wheeled out into the hallway and headed back down to the lobby of the building.
Once we were outside, I stood up from the wheelchair and looked down at Sarah sitting in it beside me.
"Thank you," she said softly as she looked up at me with tears in her eyes.
The Body Swapper
"Ready to go back?" she asked softly as she looked up at me.
I nodded and then reached down to help her up.
We walked back to the apartment together, Sarah's cane tapping lightly on the floor beside us.
Once we were inside, I helped Sarah get settled back into bed and then sat down next to her.
"Thank you," she said softly as she looked over at me.
"For what?"
I asked, smiling softly at her.
"For everything," she replied, her voice filled with gratitude.
I smiled again and leaned over to hug her gently.
"You're welcome," I said softly as I pulled away from her.
She smiled back at me and then closed her eyes, settling in for a nap.
I sat there next to her for a while, watching her sleep peacefully.
The Body Swapper
After a while, I stood up and walked over to the window.
I looked out at the city below and felt grateful for the time we had spent together. A week later, I was sitting in my apartment when I heard a knock on the door.
I stood up and walked over to answer it.
When I opened the door, I saw a woman standing there with a cane in one hand and a bag in the other.
She was dressed in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, with her hair pulled back into a ponytail.
She looked up at me with a smile on her face.
"Hi," she said softly as she looked at me with curious eyes.
"Hi," I replied as I stepped aside to let her in.
She walked into the apartment and then stopped in front of me as she looked around at my living room.
The woman's name was Emily Carter, and she was my next client.
She had been blind since birth, but had always dreamed of seeing the world around her.
She had heard about my ability from a friend and had decided to reach out to see if I could help her. "So, how does this work?" she asked softly as she looked at me with curious eyes.
"It's pretty simple," I replied with a smile as I sat down next to her on the couch.
"I'll explain everything that happens so you can understand what's going on."
She nodded and then took a deep breath before speaking again.
"Okay."
I smiled softly at her and then explained how we would swap bodies for the day so that she could see the world around her again.
The Body Swapper
"Okay," she replied softly as she stood up from the couch.
She walked over to the window and stood there for a moment, looking out at the world outside.
Then she turned around and walked back over to me, her cane tapping lightly on the floor.
She stopped in front of me and then reached out with her hand.
She touched my face gently, tracing her fingers along my features.
I stood there for a moment and then sat back down on the couch next to her.
We sat there in silence for a while, listening to each other's breathing.
After a while, I closed my eyes and focused on my breath, feeling my body begin to feel strange again as we prepared to swap places.
I opened my eyes and looked around at my living room, but it was dark and I could see nothing.
The Body Swapper
I heard Emily's laughter as she looked around at the colors and shapes that filled the room.
She walked over to the window and stood there for a moment, looking out at the world around her.
I smiled softly as I listened to her laughter, even though I was now trapped in a body that was blind to the world.
Suddenly, I felt a pressing urge in my body.
It was a feeling that I had never experienced before, but I knew what it was.
"Emily?" she called softly as she turned to look at me.
I sat there for a moment, unsure of how to respond.
"Yes?" she asked again as she took a step closer to me.
"I need to use the bathroom," I said softly as I stood up from the couch.
She nodded and then reached out with her hand.
The Body Swapper
She took hold of my arm and then led me through the apartment to the bathroom.
Her hand was firm on my arm, but gentle as she guided me through the unfamiliar darkness.
"Okay," she said softly as we reached the bathroom.
"The toilet is right in front of you. The sink is to your left and the shower is to your right."
I nodded and then walked over to the toilet.
I sat down on it and then did my business, trying not to think about the fact that I was now in a body that was blind to the world.
After a while, I stood up from the toilet and then walked over to the sink.
I turned on the water and then washed my hands before walking back out into the living room.
Emily was standing there waiting for me, her eyes shining brightly in her excitement.
"Ready?" she asked softly as she looked at me.
I nodded and then followed her out of the apartment and into the hallway.
"Yes, but there's something I need to tell you first," I said, hesitating slightly.
She tilted her head, curiosity evident in her expression. "What is it?"
"I think I felt your memories," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper.
The Body Swapper
She looked at me for a moment, her eyes wide with surprise.
Then she nodded and took a deep breath.
"I think I felt yours too," she said softly.
"I'm sorry," I said, feeling a little ashamed.
"It's okay," she replied, smiling softly.
"It's not like I didn't want you to know."
I smiled back at her and then nodded.
"Okay, let's go," I said softly.
She grinned and then reached out with her hand.
I took it in mine and then followed her as she led me through the apartment to the front door.
She opened it and then stepped out into the hallway, pulling me behind her.
We walked down the stairs and then out onto the street, Emily's excitement evident in every step she took.
The Body Swapper
She looked around at the world, taking in all of the sights and sounds that surrounded us.
I followed behind her, trying to keep up with her quick pace as we walked through the bustling streets of the city.
She stopped suddenly and then turned to look at me, a huge grin on her face.
"Look!" she exclaimed, pointing towards something behind me.
I turned to look but saw nothing except for the buildings that lined the street. "What is it?"
I asked softly as I turned back to look at her.
"The street performer," she replied, her eyes shining brightly with excitement.
"He's doing tricks."
I nodded and then looked around at the people who were gathered around watching him perform.
They were all mesmerized by his antics, their faces filled with wonder and amazement. Emily laughed softly as she watched him do another trick, her eyes shining brightly with excitement.
Then she turned to look at me, a smile still on her face.
"Let's go to the park," she said softly as she took hold of my arm again.
I nodded and then followed her as we made our way through the streets to the park.
The sun was shining brightly overhead, casting a warm glow over everything around us.
The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the sound of birds singing their songs.
Emily walked over to a bench and then sat down on it, pulling me down next to her.
We sat there for a while, listening to the sounds of nature around us and enjoying each other's company.
After a while, Emily stood up and then reached out with her hand again.
The Body Swapper
As the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over everything around us, Emily and I made our way back to my apartment.
We sat there for a while, reminiscing about the day we had just shared.
She laughed softly as she described the colors of the sunset that she had seen.
It was a sight that she had missed for so long, and it was clear that it had brought her a lot of joy.
As the time drew near for us to switch back, we sat together in silence for a moment.
I closed my eyes and focused on the swap, feeling myself being pulled back into my own body.
When I opened them again, Emily was sitting next to me, blinking softly as she adjusted to being blind once again.
"Thank you," she said softly as she reached out with her hand.
I took it in mine and then squeezed it gently.
"It was my pleasure," I replied softly.
"I'm glad I could help."
She smiled softly and then nodded her head.
The Body Swapper
"I'll never forget this day," she said softly as she stood up from the couch.
"Neither will I," I replied as I stood up next to her.
We hugged each other tightly before Emily turned and walked out of my apartment, ready to start her new life. A week later...
I stood in front of my mirror, adjusting my tie for what felt like the hundredth time that morning.
I was nervous about today's client, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why.
Maybe it was because I didn't know much about her yet, or maybe it was because I had never swapped with someone who had a mental disability before.
Whatever the reason, I couldn't shake the feeling of anticipation that filled me as I waited for her to arrive at my apartment.
I heard a knock at the door and then walked over to answer it.
When I opened it, I saw a woman standing there with a small bag slung over her shoulder.
She looked up at me and then smiled softly as our eyes met.
"Hi," she said softly as she extended her hand out towards me.
I took it in mine and then shook it firmly, trying to hide my surprise at how firm her handshake was.
"Hi," I replied as I stepped aside to let her into my apartment.
She walked in and then looked around at the familiar surroundings of my living room.
The Body Swapper
"Hi," she replied as she took in the sights and sounds of my apartment.
I closed the door behind her and then walked over to where she was standing.
"My name is Jason Hart," I said softly as I held out my hand to greet her.
She looked at it for a moment and then reached out with her own, shaking it firmly in mine.
"I'm Lily Chen," she replied as she smiled softly at me.
"It's nice to meet you, Lily," I said as I motioned for her to follow me into the living room.
We sat down on the couch together, and I could feel her eyes on me as she took in my appearance.
I smiled softly at her and then leaned forward, placing my elbows on my knees.
"So, Lily, tell me a little bit about yourself," I said softly as I looked at her.
She nodded and then began to tell me about herself, sharing stories of her life and the things that she enjoyed doing.
As we talked, I could see the fear in her eyes begin to fade away, replaced by a sense of wonder and excitement.
After a while, I stood up and then walked over to the kitchen.
The Body Swapper
I poured us each a glass of water and then brought them back over to where Lily was sitting. "Here you go," I said softly as I handed her the glass of water.
She took it from me and then nodded her head in appreciation.
"Thank you," she replied as she smiled softly at me.
I sat back down next to her on the couch and then took a sip of my own water.
"So, Lily, are you ready to swap bodies?"
I asked softly as I looked at her.
She nodded and then stood up from the couch, looking around at the familiar surroundings of my apartment once again.
I stood up next to her and then reached out with my hand, taking hold of hers gently.
"Let's do this," I said softly as I looked into her eyes.
She nodded and then closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as she prepared for the swap.
I did the same, feeling myself being pulled into Lily's body as we switched places. When I opened my eyes again, I was standing in Lily's body, looking around at the unfamiliar surroundings of my apartment.
It was a strange feeling, but one that I had grown accustomed to over time.
I took a deep breath and then looked around at the world through Lily's eyes.
The world felt different, but I was ready to embrace it.
The Body Swapper
As I settled into Lily's body, the world around me began to blur and then sharpen in a way that was unpredictable.
It was as if I were wading through a thick fog, unable to see more than a few feet in front of me.
My mind felt sluggish, as if it were stuck in the mud and unable to move.
Simple thoughts that had once been easy to grasp now slipped away from me, like sand between my fingers.
I watched as Lily, now in my body, moved cautiously through the apartment, taking in the sights and sounds of her new surroundings.
Her fingers brushed over the books on my shelf, pausing at titles that caught her interest.
I tried to focus on the world around me, but every attempt at coherent thought was met with resistance.
It was as if my mind were a puzzle, and I couldn't quite find the right pieces to fit together.
Yet, amidst the haze, a single thought emerged with clarity: I would not let her down.
The Body Swapper
I sat in Lily's body, feeling the weight of her sensory overload pressing down on me.
The room seemed too bright, the sounds too sharp, and the smells too pungent.
I watched as Lily, now in my body, moved with an awkward grace, her curiosity leading her to explore every nook and cranny of my apartment.
Suddenly, a pressing urge interrupted my thoughts—I needed to use the bathroom.
Panic bubbled up inside me as I struggled to comprehend the unfamiliar sensations coursing through my body.
How did I even do this?
How did I manage to pee when I had never done it before?
I hesitated, unsure of how to proceed.
But then I remembered that Lily was still in my body, and she would know exactly what to do.
