I wish I could get out of my life.
I’m in an unhappy marriage, living with my parents and four kids.
My sister got lucky, marrying a guy who owns his own business and is bringing in the money.
He’s nice too, even helped my parents and I out. My husband doesn’t even work, and he doesn’t let me out of the house without him tagging along.
I feel like I’m in prison.
One day, I find something that will get me out of this prison.
A way to switch bodies with someone, so I can get away and start fresh.
I just need to find someone to switch with.
That’s when I see my brotherinlaw, Mark, come home from work early.
He’s alone, Carrie is at work, and I know this is my chance.
I put on a pair of leggings that are a little too tight and a sweatshirt.
I hide my mom bod under them and head over to his place.
I knock on the door and he answers.
"Hey," he says, giving me a smile.
"Hey," I respond, looking down at the ground.
"I was wondering if I could talk to you. Am I interrupting anything?"
"No, not at all. Come on in," he says, stepping back to open the door wider for me.
We walk into the kitchen and he has me sit down at the table while he grabs us something to drink.
I look around the kitchen and see how nice it is.
"Can I get you anything?" he asks, turning to me.
"Oh, um, just water is fine," I say.
He turns to the cabinet and opens it up, pulling out a couple of glasses.
I watch as he closes the cabinet door, then turns back to me.
His eyes are on me as he smiles, but I know he doesn’t suspect a thing.
My heart pounds in my chest as I reach into my pocket and pull out the small vial containing the body-switching liquid.
I discreetly pour it into his drink, watching as it dissolves instantly.
Mark turns around, holding out a glass for me with a smile on his face.
I take it from him and we sit down at the table together.
"So what’s up?"
Mark asks, taking a seat across from me.
"Just wanted to talk to you about something," I say, looking down at my glass.
"Oh, okay. What’s on your mind?"
He asks, taking a sip of his drink.
I watch as his lips touch the rim of the glass and wait for him to swallow before answering. "Oh, nothing. Just wanted to talk to you about something."
I say, smiling at him.
He smiles back at me and takes another sip of his drink.
I watch as he swallows again and wait for it to kick in.
It only takes a few seconds before I feel myself being pulled from my body and into his.
I look down at my new hands and see that they are bigger than mine were.
I look up at Mark and see that he looks confused.
"What’s going on?"
He asks, looking down at his new hands.
"Nothing," I say with a smile on my face.
"Nothing at all."
He looks back up at me with a confused look on his face.
"What’s going on? Why do I feel like this?"
He asks, looking down at his new body. "You’re in my body now," I tell him with a smile on my face.
"What? How? Why?"
He asks, looking around the kitchen frantically.
"I found a way to switch bodies with someone. You’re in mine now."
I tell him with a smile on my face.
"You can’t do this! You can’t switch bodies!"
He yells at me angrily.
"Why not? It’s not hurting anyone."
I ask him with a smile on my face.
"You can’t do this! You have to switch us back!"
He says frantically.
"You don't understand, Carrie knows something's off; she'll figure it out," Mark insists, panic rising in his voice.
"I'll handle Carrie, just like I handled everything else," I reply, trying to sound more confident than I feel.
"But what about the kids? They'll know I'm not their mom!" he exclaims, desperation creeping into his eyes.
I watch as his face, now my own, twists in disbelief.
"Relax," I say, leaning back in his chair.
"You'll get used to it."
He looks at me with a mixture of anger and desperation.
"What do you want?" he asks.
I shrug, enjoying the feeling of being in control for once.
"I thought we could have some fun."
I stand up from the chair and stretch, feeling the unfamiliar strength of his body.
Mark struggles to stand up from the chair, his eyes darting around the room as if searching for a way out.
"You can't do this," he says, his voice shaking.
I chuckle, savoring the feeling of being in control.
"Oh, but I can," I reply, adjusting his tie with a smirk.
The doorbell rings, and I freeze for a moment before deciding to answer it.
I walk over to the door and open it to see a delivery guy holding a package.
"Sign here," he says, holding out a clipboard.
I take it from him and sign my name with a flourish, enjoying the feeling of authority that comes with using Mark's signature.
The delivery guy hands me the package and turns to leave.
I shut the door behind him and turn back to Mark, who is watching me with wide eyes.
"What's this?"
I ask, holding up the package.
Mark shrugs, still looking stunned.
"I don't know."
I walk over to the kitchen counter and set the package down, then open it up.
Inside is a sleek new gadget that looks expensive.
