It had been a long day.
I was exhausted both physically and mentally.
I just wanted to go home and see my husband.
The warmth of his body next to me and maybe a gentle rub on my shoulders was all I needed right now.
I couldn’t wait to snuggle in his arms and sleep.
I reached the elevator and pressed the button to go down.
A few seconds later, the doors of the elevator on the first floor opened.
I walked in, and just as I was about to press the button for the lobby, I heard a voice behind me saying, "Hold the doors."
I turned around and saw a man running toward the elevator.
He looked like he was in a hurry and almost missed entering the elevator.
I had to hold the doors for him twice.
He finally stepped in and let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank you," he said, panting slightly.
I smiled and nodded at him without saying anything back.
I wasn’t in the mood for a conversation.

I stared at the illuminated numbers above the elevator doors.
We were on the fifteenth floor, and it was slowly ticking down to fourteen.
The man’s breathing gradually steadied beside me.
The elevator was a little warm, and I felt my skin getting sticky under my clothes.
I could smell his cologne.
It was sharp and expensive.
I shifted my weight from one foot to the other and held my leather briefcase closer to my body.
The elevator jolted slightly between floors, making my stomach lurch.
I hated elevators.
When the man cleared his throat, I tensed up.

He was going to talk to me.
I didn’t want to have small talk with him or anyone else for that matter.
My fingers traced the worn brass button for the lobby.
Ten more floors to go.
The elevator doors part with a soft chime, and there stands Roman, his tall frame filling the entrance.
He’s holding a bouquet of white lilies and pink roses, my favorites, wrapped in brown paper.
The man beside me steps out first, brushing past Roman with a polite nod.
I remain frozen, my briefcase heavy in my hand, as Roman’s eyes meet mine.
His blue suit looks crisp despite the late hour, and his gentle smile warms his features.

"Surprise," he says softly, extending the flowers toward me.
My exhaustion momentarily forgotten, I step forward, the familiar scent of the lilies already reaching me.
My fingers tremble slightly as I reach for the flowers, their delicate petals brushing against my fingertips.
Roman moves closer, his hand reaching past me to press the lobby button once more.
As he does, he positions himself beside me, his shoulder almost touching mine.
The doors close with a quiet whoosh, and we begin our descent in comfortable silence.
I inhale deeply, the fragrance of the lilies mingling with Roman’s familiar cologne.
The combination is both soothing and comforting.
When I shift the heavy briefcase to my other hand, Roman notices.
Without a word, he gently takes it from me, our fingers briefly touching during the exchange.
I catch a glimpse of his wedding ring glinting under the fluorescent light of the elevator.
"Did you have a rough day?" Roman asks, his voice filled with concern.

I nod, feeling the weight of the day lift slightly.
"Well," he continues, a hint of mischief in his eyes, "I have something else planned to make it better."
