Scenario:After my fiancé abandoned me when my family lost everything, I wanted revenge. A night of drowning my sorrows led me straight into the arms of his uncle—the most powerful man in the country.
He called it a mistake, but his actions said otherwise. Every time my ex and his new girlfriend tried to tear me down, he stood by me, offering his silent strength and protection.
I wanted to hurt my ex as much as he’d hurt me, so I faked a pregnancy and married his uncle. But somewhere between the lies, I found myself falling for the man I was never supposed to love.
The weight of my secret finally broke me. “I lied,” I told him. “About the pregnancy. If you want a divorce—”
“Why divorce?” he said, holding me tight. “You’re mine. Let’s have a baby now.”

It wasn’t hard to figure out what my fiancé and his uncle were discussing.
The sudden appearance of his uncle’s girlfriend, the woman he had been seeing in secret for a few years now, was a dead giveaway.
My fiancé didn’t want to look at me.
Didn’t want to talk to me or be in the same room with me.
He kept glancing at his watch, as if he was waiting for someone to rescue him from our conversation.
Someone like his uncle’s girlfriend.
She had shown up unexpectedly the day before, and now he was abandoning me for her.
I knew exactly why he had done it.
My family was in crisis, and my father’s downfall had changed everything.
I used to be perfect in the eyes of my fiancé and his family.
Now, I wasn’t.
"Tell me that you are going to make it right, Lucas," I said, trying to keep my tone calm and gentle.
Lucas glanced at me, his hazel eyes filled with annoyance.
"I’ve got a hangnail," he finally said.
"What about it?"
I blinked, staring at him in confusion.
He lifted his hand and began to pick at his thumbnail.
The mahogany conference table stretched between us, a barrier that seemed insurmountable.
I could see the tension in his body, the way he kept glancing at the window behind me.
I knew what he was looking for.
I turned to see Alexandra’s car pull into the circular driveway.
My fiancé’s shoulders relaxed slightly as he watched her step out of the car.
He stood abruptly, nearly knocking over his chair.
"I need to go," he muttered, already heading for the door.
I grabbed his sleeve as he passed me, forcing him to stop.
"You’re leaving me for her, aren’t you?" my voice cracked.
He yanked his arm away from me, finally looking at me with cold eyes.
"I’m sorry, Soraya. I never wanted to hurt you."
Then he was gone, leaving me alone in the conference room.
I could hear him greeting Alexandra in the hallway, her voice shrill and happy.
I closed my eyes, feeling like I was going to shatter into a million pieces.
I had to get out of here.
The conference room felt suffocating, the air too thick.
I gathered my things and stepped out into the hallway.
It was empty, but I could hear the murmur of voices coming from the front porch.
I followed their sound, my heels clicking against the wooden floorboards.
The front porch stretched across the entire front of the house, covered with comfortable outdoor furniture.
I stepped out into the heavy evening air, and found Lucas leaning against the railing, staring at his phone.
He glanced up when he heard me behind him, his eyes narrowing as he took in my presence.
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" he asked, still keeping his distance from me. "Sure," I said, crossing my arms over my chest as I waited for him to begin.
He ran his fingers through his hair nervously - a habit of his that used to be adorable to me.
Now it just irritated me.
We stood there in silence for a long moment, Lucas still staring at his phone screen.
The crickets chirped in the evening air, and somewhere off in the distance a car alarm chirped loudly before falling silent again.
Lucas finally turned to face me, his expression neutral.
"Look," he began slowly, "what happened between us—"
His phone buzzed loudly in his hand, and he glanced down at it immediately.
I stared at his downturned face, illuminated by the phone screen.
The last thread of hope inside me snapped.
His thumbs flew across the screen, typing out a message with rapid efficiency.
He didn’t even look up at me.
The evening breeze carried Alexandra’s perfume from where she waited by her car at the end of the porch.
My heels clicked against the wooden floorboards as I took one step backward, then another.
Lucas didn’t even look up.
The sound of my footsteps faded as I walked down the path that led to the driveway and disappeared around the corner of the house.
I didn't look back.
