Shane Weber
He is a former orphan who was raised in foster care, discovering he is the heir to a multibillion dollar fortune. He is resilient, sarcastic, and determined. Shane faced immense poverty and hardship but never gave up. His life took a drastic turn when his adoptive parents kicked him out due to financial struggles. His exgirlfriend left him for someone richer. Despite criticism and judgment, Shane inherits the wealth, vowing revenge and social climb.
Grandfather
He is Shane’s wealthy grandfather who left him his entire estate. He is wise, secretive, and protective. Grandfather showed kindness to Shane by taking him in as a child and providing for his needs anonymously through gifts. Only revealing the extent of his generosity after his death, Grandfather’s actions ultimately changed Shane's fate from poverty to wealth, giving Shane the means to seek revenge on those who wronged him.
Penelope
She is Shane's exgirlfriend who left him for another man due to financial reasons. She is selfish, materialistic, and shallow. Penelope valued Shane only for his potential wealth, discarding him as soon as she found someone richer. Her relationship with Shane was marked by her constant criticism and desire for luxury, ultimately leading to their breakup and failure of their future plans.
My girlfriend left me for another guy.
Not because he was taller, or more handsome.
No.
It was because he had more money.
A lot more money.
And in this world, that's all that really mattered.
I was poor.
I'd been an orphan, then my adoptive parents kicked me out when I was seventeen.
I was nothing.
But I never gave up.
I always kept moving forward, no matter how tough things got.
And then, one day, my life changed forever.
I received a letter stating that my grandfather, who I had never met or even heard of, had left me his entire estate.
His wealth?
A staggering seventeen billion dollars.
Seventeen billion!
It was the largest amount of money anyone had ever inherited in the history of the world.
And it was mine.
Now, I know what you're thinking.
That's amazing!
You're so lucky!
And believe me, I felt the same way when I received that letter.
I'm sitting in a leather chair, across from Mr. Harrison, the lawyer in charge of my grandfather's estate.
His office is huge, with mahogany wood everywhere.
There's a desk, a bookcase, and even the walls are made of mahogany.
Mr. Harrison is a middle-aged man with gray hair and thick-rimmed glasses.
He's wearing a three-piece suit and has a kind smile on his face.
He's been shuffling through stacks of papers and documents for the last ten minutes, explaining what everything is.
It's a lot to take in, but I'm listening carefully.
"So, this is the deed to the private island in the Caribbean," he says, pointing to one of the documents.
"It's about three miles long and two miles wide. It has several homes on it, including your grandfather's main house. He also had several other properties around the world. This one is a penthouse in New York City."
He hands me a set of keys and points to another document.
"This one is a mega yacht docked in Monaco. And this one is a penthouse in Los Angeles."
He continues going through the documents, listing off property after property.
It's amazing how much stuff my grandfather had. Finally, he slides one last document across the desk to me.
"This card has no limit," he says matter-of-factly.
I pick it up and examine it.
It's a blue Citibank card with a platinum W on it.
It feels heavy in my hand, like it's made out of metal or something.
"This card has no limit," Mr. Harrison repeats.
I look at him confused.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that there is no limit to how much money you can spend on this card. It's linked to your bank account, so as long as you have money in your account, you can use this card to buy anything you want."
I nod slowly, still trying to wrap my head around everything that I'm being told.
I look back down at the card and run my fingers over it again.
It really does feel like it's made out of metal or something.
I slip it into my wallet and zip it up before looking back at Mr. Harrison.
"Is that everything?" he asks me. "Yes," I say quickly.
"I think so."
"Good," he says with a smile.
"I'll let you know if anything else comes up. In the meantime, feel free to use the card whenever you need something."
"Actually, there's one more thing," Mr. Harrison adds, his smile fading slightly.
"What is it?" I ask, sensing a shift in the room's atmosphere.
"Your grandfather left a letter for you, but it's not here—it's with someone he trusted deeply," he reveals, his eyes meeting mine with an intensity that suggests this letter holds answers I never knew I needed.
After Mr. Harrison leaves, I sit alone in the conference room, staring at the metallic card between my fingers.
The weight of it reminds me of all those nights I went hungry, scraping by on minimum wage.
My hands shake as I pull out my old flip phone - the same one Penelope mocked before leaving me.
I scroll through my contacts, past her name, and find Mike's number.
He'd stuck with me through the worst times, even letting me crash on his couch after my adoptive parents kicked me out.
I hesitate, then dial.
The phone rings, and I pace the polished floors of the conference room, my heart pounding.
When Mike answers with his usual gruff "Yeah?", I blurt out everything - the inheritance, the properties, the limitless card in my hand.
He stays silent for a long moment before letting out a low whistle.
"Man, that's... that's something else," he says.
I grip the phone tighter, remembering those nights on his lumpy couch, sharing cheap takeout.
"Listen," I tell him, "I want you to be the first to know - I'm buying that auto shop you've always dreamed about. Consider it done."
I hang up with Mike's laughter still echoing in my ears.
I pull up the local real estate listings on my phone.
Several auto shops are for sale, but one catches my eye - Johnson's Auto, where Mike worked his first job.
The place is rundown now, listed at $450,000.
My finger hovers over the "Contact Agent" button as memories flood back of Mike sharing his dreams about owning it someday.
The metal credit card feels warm in my other hand.
I take a deep breath, press the button, and schedule a viewing for tomorrow morning.
As I slip the phone back into my pocket, the door creaks open and Mr. Harrison steps back in, looking more serious than before.
"There's something else you should know," he says, his voice low and measured.
I raise an eyebrow, feeling a knot form in my stomach. "What is it now?"
