"Mom!"
I heard my kids scream in agony from downstairs and I cringed a little.
I hated it when they screamed at the top of their lungs just to get attention from my wife, Cassandra, but what could I do?
I was a father.
I couldn’t focus on them twenty-four hours a day.
I had to focus on myself too so I could be a good husband and father figure.
With that being said, I was the best husband and father figure that I could be.
My wife loved me for it and my kids loved me even more for it.
My name is Avalon Blackwood and I’m a billionaire.
Not only am I a billionaire, but I’m also a bodybuilder.
You know those guys you see on the cover of fitness magazines with a 12 pack?
Yeah, I’m one of those guys.
I have all types of machines and free weights in the gym I have in my garage.
It’s set up really nice in there too with mirrors, a fridge full of my drinks, and a sound system.
There’s even a treadmill outside next to the pool so when the weather is nice, I can get some cardio in while I tan.
The Billionaire's Ranch
I walked into my home office and sat down behind my mahogany desk.
I had some paperwork to go over before I could call it a day.
I was going over the adoption paperwork for the three siblings we found living in an abandoned warehouse.
They were dirty and hungry, but they had that same look in their eyes that I’d seen too many times before.
The same look I saw in my own eyes when I looked in the mirror.
The same look I saw in my wife’s eyes when she looked at me.
The same look I saw in my kids’ eyes when they looked at me.
It was a haunted look, like they were scared of something or someone.
I signed the last document and then the Blackwood name on the paper glowed for a second before it went back to normal.
That was how we knew our ancestors were pleased with us expanding our family.
The Billionaire's Ranch
Our ancestors were magical beings who came from another planet and they had magic that was passed down through our bloodline.
My wife and I were both descendants of them and we had magic too, but it wasn’t as strong as theirs. My wife was outside showing two stray puppies around their new enclosure.
We had a huge ranch house with a huge backyard that had a huge pool, hot tub, and dog park for all of our animals.
We had a lot of animals because we took in kids and animals that didn’t have homes or families and adopted them all.
We even had a huge barn with heated floors for all of our horses and ponies.
Each horse and pony had its own stall with its own bed made of hay and blankets.
My wife loved animals just as much as she loved kids, so she made sure they all got the best care possible.
She even hired people to help her take care of them because there were so many of them.
I looked out the window at her playing with the puppies and smiled at how happy she was.
She was always happy when we expanded our family, which made me happy too. The magic pulsed stronger when we expanded our family, so we did it often.
The Billionaire's Ranch
I pulled up the satellite images of abandoned buildings around the world on my computer and marked off the ones that had heat signatures in them.
That was how we found kids and animals that needed help.
The magic in our bloodlines told us where they were.
I clicked on a cluster of heat signatures in an old factory in Detroit.
More kids sleeping rough.
I made a note of the coordinates and sent them to our rescue team.
They would go get them tonight.
My wife walked into my office with a stack of papers in her hands.
She had a big smile on her face, so I knew she had good news.
"Hey, baby," she said, setting the papers down on my desk.
The Billionaire's Ranch
"What’s up?"
I asked, looking at the papers.
She was always bringing me more adoption papers and real estate contracts to sign because we were always expanding our family and our home.
"Good news. I got another wing added to the house. We’re going to have twenty more bedrooms and bathrooms."
I looked out the window at the construction crew already working on the east addition of our house.
They were adding another wing to it, which would give us twenty more bedrooms and bathrooms for our kids.
The machines were humming as they dug up the ground to lay the foundation for the new wing. "Great," I said, signing the contract for the construction company to start building it.
My wife signed it too and then handed me a stack of adoption papers for three siblings we’d taken in last week.
They were from New York City and had been living on the streets for a few months before we found them.
I signed them all and then Cassandra handed me another contract for a new wing to be added to our house.
It was going to be added to the west side of our house this time, which would give us ten more bedrooms and bathrooms for our kids.
I signed it and then looked out the window at my wife showing three kids around their new rooms.
Luna was showing them around their new rooms, pointing out their own bathroom and walk-in closet in each room.
They looked happy as they followed her around, smiling at their new rooms. The Detroit coordinates automatically uploaded themselves into our rescue team’s navigation system, so they would be able to find them easily tonight when they went to get them.
The rescue team was made up of five people who worked for us full-time rescuing kids and animals from all over the world.

"Do you ever wonder if we're doing enough, Avalon?" Cassandra asked, her voice tinged with a rare hint of doubt.
I paused, surprised by her question. "What do you mean, Cassie? We're giving them a home, a family... what more could we do?"
She sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly.
"I don't know. It just feels like there's always more to do, more kids to help. I worry that we're not doing enough."
I stood up and walked over to her, wrapping my arms around her waist.
"You're doing more than most people could ever dream of, Cassie. You're making a difference in the world, one child at a time."
She smiled softly, her eyes shining with gratitude.
"Thank you, Avalon. Just knowing that you believe in me makes all the difference."
I leaned down and kissed her gently, feeling the familiar rush of love and adoration for my wife.
She was my rock, my partner in every sense of the word.
Together, we were unstoppable.
And as I looked into her eyes, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, we would face them together, hand in hand. The next morning, I stood in front of the mirror in my bathroom and ran my fingers through my shoulder-length black hair.
The Billionaire's Ranch
It was longer than I usually kept it.
I liked to keep it short so it wouldn’t get in my face when I worked out.
But now that I had a personal trainer who came to our house to train me, I didn’t have to worry about it getting in my face anymore.
Cassandra walked into the bathroom and wrapped her arms around my waist from behind me.
"You look good with your hair longer," she said, smiling at me in the mirror.
I looked at myself in the mirror and nodded.
I did look good with it longer.
The morning sun streaming through the window highlighted the waves of my hair and made them shine like silk.
Luna burst into the bathroom like she always did when she wanted something from us.
"Can we have pancakes for breakfast?"
The Billionaire's Ranch
She asked excitedly as she ran over to us.
