Ella
She is a professional working a standard MondaytoFriday schedule. She is witty, independent, and cautious. Ella stumbles upon a dating site and engages in lighthearted conversations with a younger man. They bond over humor and shared interests, leading to enjoyable meetings. However, she realizes his quest for marriage and decides to end their interaction, prioritizing her own independence and avoiding potential pressure for her to settle down.
Young Man
He is an aspiring entrepreneur seeking a life partner. He is ambitious, sincere, and hopeful. He uses a dating site in search of someone to share life's responsibilities, including marriage. Despite his age difference from Ella, he uses humor and sincerity in their online conversations. Their meetings are pleasant but lack a deeper connection for Ella, leading to his eventual understanding that she's not interested in longterm commitment.
It was a Monday morning and I was getting ready to go to work when I saw a notification on my phone.
It was from a dating site I had recently joined.
I had never thought of using such sites, but something had prompted me to do so.
The young man I was chatting with on the site had sent me a message early in the morning.
"Good morning, beautiful."
I smiled as I read the message and typed my reply.
"Good morning. How are you doing today?"
"I am good, thank you," he replied.
"Hope you are too?"
"Yes, I am fine, thank you."
I sent the reply and continued getting ready for work.
When I was done, I sat down on my couch with my bag ready to leave for work, and I sent him another message.
"Will talk to you later. Have a great day."
He replied almost immediately.
"Okay, beautiful. Have a great day too."
I smiled and sent him another message.
"I have a name, you know."
"Oh, sorry," he replied.
"I forgot your name. What is it again?"
I laughed and sent him another message.
"It's Ella."
He replied almost immediately.
"Ella it is then. Beautiful Ella."
I smiled and dropped my phone on the couch.
I stared at the screen of my phone, my thumb hovering over the send button.
The morning sunlight streamed through the window of my living room and illuminated the room.
My coffee was getting cold on the side table, and I had a lot of work to do on my laptop.
But I couldn't focus on anything else except this message I was about to send.
It was 8:00 am in the morning, and I had just woken up from bed.
I had no idea why I suddenly felt like sending this message to him, but I felt like it was the right thing to do.
I took a deep breath and pressed send.
The message showed as "delivered" immediately, and I waited for his response.
A few minutes later, I saw those three dots that indicated he was typing something.
"Why did you say your name was Ella when your profile says Alex?"
"I didn't think you'd remember, and I wanted to see if you'd notice."
"Notice what, that you're not who you say you are?"
I stared at the screen of my phone, my eyes fixed on the words he had just typed.
My heart was beating fast, and I could feel my palms getting sweaty.
The office was bustling around me, with people walking in and out of the cubicles, but I barely noticed them.
My fingers were hovering over the keyboard, unsure of what to type next.
I had been chatting with this guy on a dating site for a few days now, and everything seemed fine until this message.
I didn't know how to respond to him.
Should I explain why I did what I did?
Apologize for lying?
Make a joke about it?
Each option seemed like a bad idea, and I didn't want to ruin things between us.
I typed and deleted several responses before finally deciding on one.
"I'm sorry," I typed.
"I was just being careful."
He didn't respond immediately, and I could feel my anxiety growing with each passing minute.
I took a sip of my cold coffee and tried to focus on the work in front of me, but I couldn't concentrate. A notification popped up on my screen reminding me of a meeting in an hour, but I couldn't care less about it right now.
All I wanted was to hear back from him and know that everything was okay between us.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he responded.
"Being careful is one thing, but lying is another."
"I know," I typed back quickly.
"I'm sorry. It won't happen again."
He didn't respond right away, and I could feel my heart sinking.
Had I messed things up too badly?
I took another sip of my coffee and tried to calm myself down.
Maybe he just needed some time to think about it, I told myself.
Maybe he would come around eventually.
But as the minutes ticked by and he still hadn't responded, I couldn't help but feel a sense of dread creeping over me.
I had never felt this way before, and it was uncomfortable to say the least. "What are you doing?"
I heard a voice behind me and turned around to see one of my coworkers standing there with a curious expression on her face.
"Just checking my email," I replied quickly, trying to hide my phone from view.
"Oh," she said with a nod.
"Well, good luck with whatever you're doing."
"Thanks," I said with a forced smile as she walked away.
I turned back to my computer screen and tried to focus on work again, but it was no use.
The truth was out, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something important had just slipped through my fingers.
